At 5'3 and 10 stone 11lbs. I know I'm overweight but not by that much!

I would say the issue is with the company you keep not with your dress size. How would anyone think that chatting in a toddler group gave you carte blanche to suggest someone needs to shop at an outsize clothes retailer?

ouryve · 26/03/2015 12:55

And woman at toddler group is bloody rude.

SomewhereIBelong · 26/03/2015 12:58

it is overweight, (BMI 26ish) but normal rules don't apply with pregnancy - though most people do stay at least a dress size higher on average after pregnancy than before (not the super fit mums of MN of course)

squizita · 26/03/2015 12:59

Soontobe I am a bit Hmm about these claims of size 16 at 10 or 11 stone. Unless they only shop in topshop or forever 21 and then just before their period.

As I said my shallow vain self has hauled round many high street, vintage and second hand shops. I spend time on sad fashion forums.
Outside of this thread I've just not come across short women of 9-11 stone who would fit size 16. It would just swamp them.
Home scales can be notorious. I've 2 sets - one has me at 8 lb lighter than the other! If someone is size 16 and under 5"3 I would query the weight first.
One thing both my fellow vain fashion friends and my sporty friends agree on is measure don't weigh. Home tape measures are always accurate!

MeanwhileHighAboveTheField · 26/03/2015 13:00

I'm about the same weight and height as you (maybe half an inch shorter). I also wear a 12. I'm fit, muscly and fairly slim but I do have a bit of extra weight I could lose.

I would be horrified if somebody suggested plus size clothes to me!

notinagreatplace · 26/03/2015 13:01

I'm 5 foot 4 and about 11 St 12, am a size 14 in most places, sometimes a 16 because boobs and sometimes a 12 in jeans. Am genuinely surprised by the number of posters who are significantly lighter but in the same size. My bmi is 27-28 which is overweight but not obese and the research suggests is fairly healthy.

I think of 18 + as 'plus size'

wfrances · 26/03/2015 13:07

im 5ft 4 and 10 stone
im a size 12/14
im nearly 2 stone lighter than the above poster but we wear the same size clothes.

ouryve · 26/03/2015 13:08

Squizita - I'm just under 11 stone and I have a 41" bust. That's never going to squeeze into a size 12 and strains a bit on some 14s. (Not is the bit where my waist is supposed to be!)

ouryve · 26/03/2015 13:09

Nor is...

nottheOP · 26/03/2015 13:09

Either;

A) She is rude
B) She is trying to make herself feel better
C) She is trying to alienate you
D) You dress badly for your size

I suspect a,b, & c are much more likely that d

Springtimeconcert · 26/03/2015 13:10

I've weighed myself at boots and think they'd be pretty accurate?

OP posts:
squizita · 26/03/2015 13:10

I feel that. I just don't do shirts/cardigans anymore* ... Wink

Have you tried Pepper berry? They are cut for the more ample bosomed and are by Bravissimo.

*I do wear jumpers instead. Don't just wander round with the GGs free!

squizita

It makes me look I'm lying about my clothes size (which I'm really not!) when people at 10 or 11st say they wear a 16. When I was 10st I wore a 10, even with fairly impressive norks Confused

Bambambini · 26/03/2015 13:12

I think people need to stop focussing on dress size And more on your height and weight ratio being hearthy.

You could be 5 FT and a size 12 but you could still be way overweight and obese and a 6 Footer could could look slinky and skinny in 14.

Sounds like this woman might have just been rude though.

MegMogandOwlToo · 26/03/2015 13:12

I'm surprised you'd be nearing plus sized clothes.

I'm 5"2 and 10st2 and size 10

FeckTheMagicDragon · 26/03/2015 13:12

Whoever said that to was being an out and out bitch to be honest. 12 is not plus size, you have recently had another human being inside you. Ignore her, and avoid her in future.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 26/03/2015 13:12

I was just about to suggest pepperberry. Clothes shopping for tops and desses became much easier when I discovered them.

Boots scales are far from accurate. I used to work in Boots and I can assure you that they are dumped in the shop on the day it opens and then never, ever calibrated or checked by anyone. Children jump up and down on them while their parents shop and even a pharmacist that I asked had no idea what increments they weigh in. They weigh to the nearest 1lb, by the way, nothing smaller.

squizita · 26/03/2015 13:13

...and YY shops persist on putting the waist of fitted clothes at the wrong point for most women. Is yours higher? As in "true" waist?

Retro Chick is a retro blog which has some great shopper info on this if you rummage her sizing and style bits. It's about modern shops, so even if you don't like the style you can get hold of the waist/hip ratios etc.

ouryve · 26/03/2015 13:14

I keep meaning to look in, Squizita. My nearest one is a bit of a trek and I don't like ordering online from somewhere I'm not sure of the sizing.

Jackie0 · 26/03/2015 13:14

She was being a cow.
I hope you had a snappy answer for her.

squizita · 26/03/2015 13:15

Boots scales once told me I had 50% body fat on their fat-o-meter hand bit. OK this was a few years back but I was 7 stone and had fainted in my 2nd exercise class of the day. Even in my borderline ED mindset I knew that was wrong.

For obvious reasons I have never used them since.

squizita · 26/03/2015 13:17

Our it frustrates me endlessly that somewhere like Debenhams doesn't pick this need up. They do petite and tall ... bigger bust is surely pretty common.

Springtimeconcert · 26/03/2015 13:19

Well I've weighed myself elsewhere too so unless every set of scales I've been on in the last 12 months aren't accurate I think 10'11 is about right.

Or maybe I should go to the local zoo and weigh myself there Hmm

OP I wish I was your size! I'm 5'3'' and a half; and weigh 12st10lbs at present. I fit into a size 14 generally - definitely don't need 'plus sizes'.

I've got til June to hopefully get down to 11 stone - it's so hard though! I eat a really healthy diet, maybe too much fruit, and take a lot of meds & have a physical job which make me really tired, but I need to start back at the gym.

I even fit into a 12 in some shops on my bottom half. My top half is the problem, I'm a 36F so getting eg. coats etc to fit properly is difficult! And my work tunic is huge to allow for my boobs, despite wearing size 14 trousers.

It sounds like you hang out with a bitchy unsupportive 'frenemy' - one of my best mates has just had a baby & is battling with her weight but I would never suggest she go for 'plus sizes'!
