To buy my child an e cigarette

Okay I just know two of my teenagers smoke. Haven't found evidence but insider knowledge (ds telling me Wink ) and both have a ready supply of gum and mint.

Anyway I was thinking if I make them go cold turkey it won't work but if I can get them an e cig or nicquitine gum then maybe we could quit like adult smokers with less chance of failing. Anyway Aibu

New*

ginmakesitallok · 22/03/2015 20:35

Yes it's a substitute for smoking. A healthier, cheaper, tastier substitute for smoking. I've been vaping for almost 2 years and I can't imagine ever going back to cigarettes. Why would I? Cigarettes are expensive, smelly, socially unacceptable and are likely to kill me. At the moment ecigs are as easy to find and buy as cigarettes. If I lost my vape then I'd buy a new one, I wouldn't buy fags.

Sallystyle · 22/03/2015 20:36

Joy, you seem to keep forgetting that not everyone uses nicotine juice.

I am sure those who have never smoked use non nicotine juice as well.

ginmakesitallok · 22/03/2015 20:37

Joyfull- you do realise that e liquid comes in different strengths and that many many vapers wean themselves off nicotine and vape I liquid with no nicotine?

Sallystyle · 22/03/2015 20:38

And yes Joy, I know that 100%

I don't want to give up my vape like many people don't want to give up their glass of wine, because I enjoy it.

I haven't had nicotine for a long time so no, I would not pick up a ciggie.

ginmakesitallok · 22/03/2015 20:39

Oh and it most definitely is a new phenomenon, you just have to look at the increasing numbers of vapers, the huge rise in the range of e cigs available, the shift away from smoking cessation services etc etc

ginmakesitallok · 22/03/2015 20:41

It's a bit like an alcoholic moving to lower strength alcohol, then moving to fruit juice and you saying that the fruit juice is a substitute for alcohol.

pippahooper · 22/03/2015 20:42

Definitely not a good idea to give children a e-cig. Those things are stupidly addictive and i feel it would probably lead them to smoking the real thing down the line.

Today in the park, me and my mum were shocked to see a boy about 8 years old picking up a fag end and pretending to smoke. I then heard him asking a grown up if they smoked.

Sallystyle · 22/03/2015 20:45

Yeah e-cigs not a new phenomenon?

I wonder if Joy actually vapes at all as she doesn't even know about non nicotine juice Hmm

Mrsstarlord · 22/03/2015 20:46

Genuine question:

If its like fruit juice, is the stuff in a vape is naturally occurring and been inhaled for centuries (I genuinely don't know what is in one).

My biggest concern is that there is such little research and particularly long term research about this that people may be inhaling something even more harmful than cigarette smoke (and I am the worse reformed smoker you can imagine!)

ginmakesitallok · 22/03/2015 20:54

In mine there is propylene glycol (the stuff in smoke machines), vegetable glycerine (the stuff for coughs from boots), nicotine liquid, and food flavourings. So not naturally occurring, but tobacco is naturally occurring, so naturally occurring isn't necessarily good!

ginmakesitallok · 22/03/2015 20:55

There is no evidence that vaping leads to smoking. Why would it??? Why would someone move from vaping strawberry to smoking????

Mrsstarlord · 22/03/2015 21:00

Completely agree with your last statement.

It was more that you compared it to fruit juice which is obviously something which is regularly drunk and has been for years and with the exception of perhaps some dental issues there are no ill effects. I wondered whether this is the case for ecigs.

So the propylene glycol, is that safe to inhale on such a regular basis? Someone mentioned upthread about asthma inhalers using the same chemical, but if you inhale too much of this you get palpitations - is this the same for ecigs?

I feel really anxious about them because they are now so widely used and I don't think they are fully researched to be fair I don't know much about them

Joyfulldeathsquad · 22/03/2015 21:03

U2 I do vape - honest to god pinky promise!

And I do know about nicotine free juice. If it floats your boat wasting money on it rather than giving up totally go for it - maybe you think you look cool like they did in the 50s Grin why would you puff on fruity air? Ha ha Grin

No it's not a new phenomenon. It's just the latest in gimmicks to give up smoking whilst still maintaining nicotine.

Also I would really like to know the percentage of people that actually do go down in strengths as I don't think it would be a lot. All the people I know vaping have not. The tobacco companies did well with this. Smoking was becoming more and more antisocial so they brought this out and managed to convince some people it wasn't smoking. A bit like the emperors new clothes.

I love vaping. I would like to quit full stop but I'm miserable with out nicotine.

Joyfulldeathsquad · 22/03/2015 21:07

Oh god the vaping die hards are coming!

Of course there is a possibility vaping could lead to smoking real fags. It's only a small step away from menthol fags then your bang on the B&H

On a serious note. No they are not fully researched. Many countries won't even allow them.

ginmakesitallok · 22/03/2015 21:13

The tobacco companies didn't start the vaping phenomenon. They jumped on the band wagon when they realised the impact vaping would have on their smoking profits. I have never and will never buy an ecig or eliquid from a company owned by a tobacco company.

NoseyParka · 22/03/2015 21:15

I vape and am definitely addicted to the nicotine. I've decreased from 16mg to around 10mg recently which has been fine, but I had previously got down to 6mg which crept up again last year. For me, it's the throat hit. I love the flavours and the action but for me it would be totally pointless without the throat hit.

Good for you gin and your fruity air!

Sallystyle · 22/03/2015 21:27

Sadly, I really don't look cool with my big green battery.

I look rather silly Grin

ginmakesitallok · 22/03/2015 21:28

Thanks joyfully! I feel great, no more wheezing, no chest infections, I smell fabulous (as does my house), I've saved over £5000, my kids don't breathe in second hand smoke any more - being a non smoker is fabulous!

Sallystyle · 22/03/2015 21:29

And I don't consider it a waste of money. I bet I spend less on it than most people do on wine and chocolate or nights out.

Joyfulldeathsquad · 22/03/2015 21:31

gin I know how you feel !
