It has gone a bit darker, but I was hoping for something more dramatic. AIBU?

Oh sorry, I can't get the picture to post.

I've been ridiculously excited about this all week and was really worried we wouldn't see a thing due to weather in south east Scotland - we had quite a bit of cloud and the cloud got really thick during the most coverage but there were enough breaks that we saw the eclipse and could look without glasses. It got darker and really cold for about 20 minutes. There was some rather pretty pinky lights through the cloud and I took about 120 photos Hmm. DH had reasonably good view in Edinburgh too and also took rather too many pics Grin

JugglingFromHereToThere · 20/03/2015 11:37

I had a great view this morning in my back garden in the Midlands (roughly!)
Was really special to see it on home ground - used some solar glasses and gave some to the DC to take in with them to school - wonder if they got a view? Hope maybe they did!

diddl · 20/03/2015 11:43

Wish that I'd had some glasses, would have seen it perfectly!

Still, was ridiculously excited by what I saw with my pin hole viewer!BlushGrin

Complete cloud cover now & so bloody cold that you can see your breath!

Mousefinkle · 20/03/2015 11:47

Didn't see anything here in Yorkshire, way too cloudy Sad. Disappointment.

Dumbledoresgirl · 20/03/2015 11:50

Last attempt to post my picture of the eclipse.

YABU I expected to see nothing due to the cloud here (Glasgow) but then it just appeared and it was quite overwhelming. This is my first eclipse (1999 passed me by, first year at uni so I was probably at the pub) and I'm so glad I went outside to look at it

MackerelOfFact · 20/03/2015 11:57

It was rubbish here in Central London, it just looked like it was going to rain.

I remember full-on darkness in 1999 - I know today wasn't a total eclipse but at 85% coverage, I expected it to at least feel a bit eveningy.

OneTwoManyLots · 20/03/2015 12:07

Was cloudy here too but still looked amazing.

Let down in London. When's the next one? Don't tell me I'll be dead by then.

chocoluvva · 20/03/2015 12:28

Watched it intermittently when the cloud cover was light enough to see it. I was pleased that I happened to have heard a nice lady on the radio explain that it wouldn't get very dark as the sun is so bright that even 5% of it in visibility emits a lot of light.

I liked it when the moon was just starting to pass it and the sun seemed to have a bite out of it.

isseywithcats · 20/03/2015 12:28

it was broken cloud here in halifax but not that bad that i didnt see the whole thing from my back garden i found it brilliant you could see the moon moving across the sun and without the glare so i was well happy that i got the view of it i did

chocoluvva · 20/03/2015 12:30

There are loadsa eclipses around the world - if you're prepared to follow them!

vikkiroberts84 · 20/03/2015 12:58

Was waiting on something dramatic too, the papers hyped it so much it never lived up to expectation sadly

daisychain01 · 20/03/2015 13:07

Over here in the Wye Vallley we had a beautifully clear sunny morning, hardly any cloud. Unfortunately I didn't have glasses so didn't get to see the actual eclipse, however, the shadows cast by the effect were really wonderful. The patio which is normally bathed in sunshine as it is Easterly facing was eerily cast in shadow for almost 20 mins.

Lovely photo dumbledore!

I tried pointing my iPad up in the sky but I think the effect was lost, it just looks like a big blob of light. Not sure if you have to put a special filter on a camera to get the right effect?

The first photo was at 0932 and the second was 0910. Not much difference!

Timelapse video over Belfast.

Charlesroi · 20/03/2015 13:16

We had a great view (in the Midlands) using binoculars to project the image. The light went really strange and my depth perception was a bit wonky. It got very cold and quite dark and there was a noticeable breeze. The shadows went fuzzy but I didn't see any crescents.
It was great seeing the local primary school kids out with their pinhole viewers and all the oohs and ahhs. That's proper science Grin
Actually I saw quite a few people out viewing.

ratspeaker Our cats tried to pull that "it's dinner time" one too. No chance.

trixymalixy · 20/03/2015 13:21

I was in Cornwall for the 1999 eclipse, that was amazing. It went dark and was eerily silent, then the birds started up again. It was like the world paused for a few seconds.

Today's was totally rubbish, it barely went dark and I only caught a fleeting glimpse of it through the cloud. I'm glad I didn't keep the kids home from school after all!

bigbuttons · 20/03/2015 13:23

pissed off. Brighton, thick cloud, was rubbish. Now this Pm there is a pretty cloudless sky. grr.

mumeeee · 20/03/2015 13:23

It was good here in Cardiff

mumeeee · 20/03/2015 13:27

DH set up his camera to take a photo. He did put a filter on it. I. think a lot of schools were making an event of it well I know some schools round here were. The light was very strange.

brainwashed · 20/03/2015 13:30

Fantastic in east lothian. My pinhole was working pretty well then I discovered a neighbour had a telescope he was using to project the image Grin. Cat was confused!

Dumbledoresgirl · 20/03/2015 13:34

Daisychain - thank you. I am just across the way from you - just over the Severn - so I think we were sharing the same bit of cloudlessness. Wink It was amazing actually as pretty much every day this week we have had thick mist from the Severn obscuring the sky until about midday but today it cleared at about 9am.

Yes, I used a filter. I put my 1999 solar eclipse goggles (never throw anything away!) over the end of the camera lens. It was very hard to get the lens to 'find' the sun and focus on it, plus you had to hold the angle of the goggles just right. I took loads of shots; most got deleted.

I don't quite understand people's disappointment that the light levels didn't fall. Most of you were surely in Britain in 1999 and old enough to remember it? Where I was for the 1999 eclipse we had 98% cover and it still remained light enough to see clearly so it didn't surprise me today, with about 87% cover that the light only dropped to a summer evening level.

MyBootsAreMuddy · 20/03/2015 13:43

It was rubbish where I was (Wiltshire). Dd1s school had made special projectors in DT and were all excited about watching it. We were invited to stay and watch (and eat bacon baps!) but it was so cloudy we couldn't see a thing......then a few minutes after it was all over the cloud lifted and it's been brilliant blue sky since!! Absolutely bloody typical!
Meanwhile back at home 30 mins down the road Dh said it was clear and had a lovely view.... The cows however got a bit confused and acted weird and apparently he could hear the horses stampeding around their paddock, so they were obviously a bit spooked by it.

Ramy48 · 20/03/2015 13:44

I didn't see a bloddy thing!!!
