To ask for your happy mirena coil stories?

I had a mirena coil fitted on Monday. It was a bit of a snap decision made under duress. I had to have a very early termination after a contraception failure and unexpected pregnancy. I didn't want to go through with it but for lots of reasons didn't feel like I had much choice. So at the clinic I was in a complete state, and when they offered to fit a coil it seemed like a good idea as I NEVER wanted to be in that position again.

So I had it fitted without doing much research, which I realise is a topsy turvy way of doing things. Since then, I've looked online and most people seem to be saying that it's done terrible things to them. I'm hoping that that's because people who are happy without it wouldn't generally feel the need to post on the Internet.

So please tell me if mirena has worked well for you. I'm scared I'm going to put on 8 stone, break out in acne, become completely savage mood wise and lose all my hair!

No periods.

No need for prescriptions or trips to the Doctor for more prescriptions.

No more babies (although I occasionally want one, I don't really).

I am on my 3rd and have been having them fitted since the birth of my 2nd child in 2002.

All good things.

i ve had some problems with mine, but nothing to write about.
so easy and helps with the run up to the big M

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 19/03/2015 12:06

Ah that's good! Another thing, I know it's 5 years away but is it painful to have it removed? I was out cold for the putting in bit so I have no idea about that.

Happy story here. No periods. Stable mood (better than when on the pill, or on nothing). Generally just "me".

Sleepingisgivingin · 19/03/2015 12:10

Had mine in since 2011 - after a bit of spotting I've had no periods at all.

No problems at all with it really and no weight gain (well none that wasn't caused by my overrating! I'm 2stone lighter than when I got it)

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 19/03/2015 12:13

Hurrah! I shall put the Evans catalogue down (does Evans even still exist?).

Overhereinthecorner · 19/03/2015 12:13

Had them on and off since 2001, babies in between. Marvellous things. No periods, no mood swings. Hardly notice them being removed as long as threads are there. Slightly different story with missing threads.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 19/03/2015 12:16

I'm particularly excited about the no periods thing.

Had mine fitted last year for constant bleeding and flooding.

Like you op it was all a bit hurried on me but thought what the hell. Go for it as consultant assured me it would work.

Took a while to work, around 9 months to completely sort, but now period free and I have my life back.

HemlockStarglimmer · 19/03/2015 12:20

I loved mine. Put in easily two months post partum, not periods for five years - bliss.

Removing it was fine, just a little crampy.

Putting in a new one was a whole other story though. My lovely and experienced GP wasted three of them trying to get one to stay but my womb was determined to expel them straight away. I was scheduled for a GA but in the end I went on the mini-pill as I had no one to take me to the GA appointment. I would rather have had another coil though.

exexpat · 19/03/2015 12:24

I've had mine a few months and am very happy with it - periods are light to almost non-existent already, after being extremely heavy before (I'm in my mid/late 40s, 2 DC, probably heading for perimenopause), and no noticeable negative side effects. DP could occasionally feel the threads in the first few weeks (ouch) but that's fine now too.

SconeRhymesWithPhone · 19/03/2015 12:24

I'm on my third and I love my Mirena coil. Had two lots of endometriosis, so had a coil to stop my periods completely. I have had no weight gain or bad side effects, no mood swings, nothing bad, just no periods!

The first two were put in after surgeries, but the last one was put in by the GP. The taking out of the old one is fine. The putting in of the new one was hideous, but over in a couple of minutes. The doctor said it "nips a bit". Understatement of the century. Worth it though.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 19/03/2015 12:25

Do periods normally disappear straight away? I know there can be a bit of spotting while it settles down. My periods are usually quite light, only about 3 days.

Paintedpinksapphires · 19/03/2015 12:37

I took a year to make a decision about getting one. Best thing since sliced bread wish I'd done it sooner.

I had spotting on off for a month or two (very light) before it settled down.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 19/03/2015 12:41

Love it. Had three since 2002 - no problems at all. Removal fine. Really suits me.

NurseP · 19/03/2015 12:46

I had one removed last summer as wanted a baby. It was a uncomfortable for a few seconds when it was removed but had no problems with it at all a few days of cramps when first put in and light bleeding but then no periods. Yay! . I did hear that if you ttc after removal then it is best to use condoms to prevent immediate pregnancy as a couple of natural cycles is a good idea to allow womb lining to be thicker. Hope this helps. You can always get t removed if you de ide it's not for you but I would reccomend giving it a fair chance. i will certainly have another after baby is born. X

kewtogetin · 19/03/2015 12:50

No problems here, love mine, had it in for 3 years after suffering such hideous periods i daren't leave the house. No spotting or weight gain, no problems. As for having it put in, holy Christ 'pinch a bit'?! Was fucking dreadful!

KanyesVest · 19/03/2015 12:50

I had a merina inserted on Monday too, so I'm glad to hear the good stories! I had it done under GA as I was having a D&C and polyps removed at the same time. I'm still very crampy and when I'm sitting down, I feel like it's pressing into my belly. I'm not sure if it my over active imagination or real given I freaked out at the size of it when I opened the box . Could anyone else feel it??

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 19/03/2015 12:52

This is all very heartening.

Note to self: take some tramadol before getting it changed in five years Grin

OP posts:
Littlefluffyclouds81 · 19/03/2015 12:54

I was really crampy until yesterday, wasn't sure if it was the coil or the termination, or a combination. Seems to have settled down now though. Are they big? I'm imagining it to be a dinky little thing.

OP posts:
DramaAlpaca · 19/03/2015 13:01

The mirena itself is quite small, it just comes in a big box! I had to pick mine up from the chemist & got a shock when I saw it. Apparently it comes with a long applicator, hence the scary big box.

All positive for me, too, apart from the horrendous cramping for a few weeks after it went in. I had mine in under GA, as like KanyesVest I had a D&C and polyps removed at the same time. The cramping was probably more to do with tenderness after the D&C rather than the mirena itself, but I'll admit I was in quite a lot of pain for the first few weeks and it took a good while for the bleeding to stop completely.

I had mine in my 40s to cope with heavy periods in the peri-menopause. It literally changed my life. Once it settled down I had no periods and no side effects either. No weight gain, no acne & no mood swings. All good.

KanyesVest · 19/03/2015 13:19

DramaAlpaca, yes, the box was about the size of my arm but the actual merina was bigger than I expected, I took a good look! Looking forward to good things when all settles down, based on this thread.

WhereYouLeftIt · 19/03/2015 13:41

Nothing but good stories from me too. Around the 4 years 6 months mark of my first Mirena I did start having bleeding/pain (mine was fitted to control my endometriosis), have since had a new Mirena fitted . Removal was uncomfortable rather than painful, and lasted seconds.

Yes, the size of the box did make my eyes widen a bit Grin.

LexLoofah · 19/03/2015 13:45

had my 2nd fitted yesterday as v happy with the first, mega light periods, no faffing with pills, the hormones are localized (or that is my understanding anyway). Yes to the 'pinching' more like 'punching' the 'we are just going to measure your uterus now' was the worse bit and the first one did not go in properly so they had to take it out and put another one in but despite all of that am still 100% positive about it. a bit crampy today but not awful.

friend had one of those sticks they embed in your arm and she had horrendous reaction, would not consider that as an alternative

of course would prefer DH to do his bit contraception wise and get the snip as we are done having babies but if he is not keen then I will happily have the IUD instead
