To ask for your happy mirena coil stories?

I had a mirena coil fitted on Monday. It was a bit of a snap decision made under duress. I had to have a very early termination after a contraception failure and unexpected pregnancy. I didn't want to go through with it but for lots of reasons didn't feel like I had much choice. So at the clinic I was in a complete state, and when they offered to fit a coil it seemed like a good idea as I NEVER wanted to be in that position again.

So I had it fitted without doing much research, which I realise is a topsy turvy way of doing things. Since then, I've looked online and most people seem to be saying that it's done terrible things to them. I'm hoping that that's because people who are happy without it wouldn't generally feel the need to post on the Internet.

So please tell me if mirena has worked well for you. I'm scared I'm going to put on 8 stone, break out in acne, become completely savage mood wise and lose all my hair!

I bled lightly for about six months and still have periods. Haven't broken out in zits, lost any hair of gained any weight though!

StrawberryAndScream · 19/03/2015 16:26

A bit like hattymattie. Mine was put in under GA while having a benign ovarian cyst removed six years ago. It was mainly to help with extremely heavy periods. It made them much lighter, but they did not disappear altogether and became irregular, but worth it! No weight gain, moods or anything else. I was dreading having it taken out a few months back but didn't feel a thing! Would recommend.

I'm (relatively) new to Mirena, having had it about six weeks. Have had two periods that were slightly longer (c 7 days in total rather than 5) but much, much, much lighter than before - spotting would be more accurate than bleeding. Love it so far.

Horopu · 19/03/2015 16:34

First one worked its way lose and I had to remove it myself.

Second one has been awesome. No periods etc. I've been advised by my doctor that current research says they last 7 years. So I'm keeping mine in for 6 years until I'm 45. Then the next one should will last me until I"m 51 and hopefully menopausal. As I have to pay for it all myself (in NZ) I'm happy to stretch it out.

My periods came back quite quickly while breast feeding but I have no bleeding with the mirena and my periods were very heavy and painful.

Firstly, you hit the nail on the head. - if you're unhappy with something, you tend to make a fuss, and if it's fine, you don't. So yes, you will read more negative reviews online. It's a skewed sample.

You'll also see people blaming it for everything under the sun, because people don't want to believe that their symptoms might possibly be something else entirely - it's much easier to blame a 'thing' than accept you just have a terrible time with your periods, or you're not conceiving easily. People will also believe anything and tend not to have a scientific background, so they are easily led by others on those kinds of boards...they are best avoided!

I had mine inserted a few years back. It wasn't the most fun I've ever had, and it cramped like a bastard for a few weeks. But... It meant almost perfect contraception, and no periods for me. 'Twas fabulous. Had it removed several months back and barely felt a thing. Took the midwife a little while to grab the cords, but actually getting it out was pain free. Periods took about six weeks to get back to a routine, and were lighter than pre coil. Conceived in about six months, which considering I'm over 35 and we weren't trying that hard is fine. No acne, no apparent systemic effects (I had really nasty migraine on the pill.)

Let it settle in a bit is my advice. I cramped for weeks with it, then it settled in absolutely fine. The amount of hormone in it is really small - it's generally a local effect rather than a systemic one. I'd say give it six month before you make a final judgement - everyone's perfect contraception is different, it's not one size fits all.

I will absolutely go back and get another one after sprog no.1 is born. To me, it's an amazing and liberating thing to have reproductive choice.

Yes having it put in under GA on NHS

would highly recommend Grin

fluffymouse · 19/03/2015 16:46

I had one, it was great.

No periods.

No weight gain/other issues.

I only removed it to TTC.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 19/03/2015 16:46

I love mumsnet! Feeling a lot more optimistic now.

And thrilled that I can can opt to get put under to have it changed Grin

LOVE mine (my third). Had about 3 months of spotting and a few cramps with the first before periods disappeared.

MollyMaDurga · 19/03/2015 16:51

Oh cool, I'm almost 46 now so if I have my new one that will be my last. Sorted.

SecretSquirrels · 19/03/2015 17:00

Yes to this.

Don't they do the traditional coil any more?
I just wonder as if you have no problems with heavy periods that might be an alternative.
I used regular coils throughout my twenties and thirties, only went for mirena to cure heavy bleeding.

I have to say I wouldn't subject myself to the risks of a general anaesthetic just to avoid a bit of pain.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 19/03/2015 17:05

No periods

Yay

I need to get mine changed though and am worried about it

tropical1 · 19/03/2015 17:12

I'm on my second, put in for excruciating periods that were so heavy, a super plus tampax only lasted an hour, they were irregular so could never go out unprepared.
Since I had the merina fitted, my periods have gone completely, I don't possess any San-pro anymore as I haven't needed anything for years! I have put weight on, but suspect I would have anyway! I don't have the mood swings that I used to, but still have regular chocolate cravings!!

Meechimoo · 19/03/2015 17:17

Love mine. Had it three years. Insertion was quite painful but worth it for several years of hassle free contraception.
No periods, no side effects, no hassles.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 19/03/2015 17:27

The reason I didn't go for the copper coil is because I'm quite sensitive to metal (jewellery), and copper is one that I react to so didn't want to take that chance. Also, the thought of heavier periods wasn't too attractive.

Thanks for the tip invisibleperson

I'm not in the UK so may well be something I can get. I will ask the Doc.

I had heavy periods and PMT on the Pill OP - much better on the mirena.

luckylavender · 19/03/2015 19:25

I absolutely love mine. Was having a completely torrid time with the peri menopause and flooding etc and nothing else worked.

leolion · 19/03/2015 19:33

Positive story here too. Had mine for about 3 years. I get occasional light spotting and tend to get sore boobs each month but no real problems. Insertion was a bit painful but very quick. I've not had any weight gain. Still get a bit moody and snappy at certain points of my cycle but that's because I'm a miserable old codger.

DefinitelyNotElsa · 19/03/2015 20:14

I was incredibly happy with my mirena coil and only had it removed so we could start TTC. Periods stopped after a couple of months and I didn't experience any side effects.

I'll definitely be having another one fitted after DC1 arrives in the autumn.
