To ask for your happy mirena coil stories?

I had a mirena coil fitted on Monday. It was a bit of a snap decision made under duress. I had to have a very early termination after a contraception failure and unexpected pregnancy. I didn't want to go through with it but for lots of reasons didn't feel like I had much choice. So at the clinic I was in a complete state, and when they offered to fit a coil it seemed like a good idea as I NEVER wanted to be in that position again.

So I had it fitted without doing much research, which I realise is a topsy turvy way of doing things. Since then, I've looked online and most people seem to be saying that it's done terrible things to them. I'm hoping that that's because people who are happy without it wouldn't generally feel the need to post on the Internet.

So please tell me if mirena has worked well for you. I'm scared I'm going to put on 8 stone, break out in acne, become completely savage mood wise and lose all my hair!

All good.
I had my first at age 40 after DC2 was born and I developed horrendous heavy periods.
No side effects at all and bleeding reduced to a token spot.
I had two more after that and the last one tided me over the menopause.
I had no GA just had it fitted at the GP. Removal was simple and painless. Fitting a new one was, if I'm honest, painful because they struggled to get the coil in. But not for long and so, so worth it.

Mamadothehump · 19/03/2015 13:54

Had mine fitted in sept 2011. 2-3 light periods since then, no hormonal side effects. No hair loss. No weight gain and no surprise pregnancies Grin

Bearleigh · 19/03/2015 13:54

Great experiences for me too since I had one fitted in 2000.

clare8allthepies · 19/03/2015 13:55

Thanks for starting this, I've got an appointment to get a mirena fitted in 4 weeks but I was starting to get cold feet after reading some horror stories on here. Glad to hear some positive tales!

TheElementsSong · 19/03/2015 13:58

I've not had to think about contraception and not had periods for 5 years, I haven't gained any weight (and if I had, it would probably be because I've aged 5 years). Getting it replaced next week so am reading the replacement stories like this Shock

Grin at punch not pinch!

I'm on my 4th, best thing ever...
No periods, no mood swings occasional acne on my back but otherwise great Smile

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 19/03/2015 14:55

I am so glad you posted this. I'm having one fitted on Monday and have been putting it off since the birth of DC2 18 months ago. In the meantime, periods have got heavier and heavier and so I'm determined to go through with it this time. Great to hear some positive stories.

DownAtFraggleRock · 19/03/2015 15:01

I've had mine nearly 5 yrs. Love it. Not looking forward to having it changed. I've not had kids and have a cervix like a steel trap.

I screamed when they did the first one Blush. The Dr thanked me for clearing her waiting room Grin

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 19/03/2015 15:06

Oh god. I am not looking forward to having a new one, assuming this one works for me.

Got a feeling my cervix may not quite be a steel trap though Blush

Look, if you have given birth then the pain of a coil fitting is not quite that bad. And shorter. As I said above the long term benefits out way a bit of pain.
My GP reckons the Mirena has saved thousands of women from having hysterectomies.

invisibleperson · 19/03/2015 15:15

On my second, no periods after about the first five months. Brilliant.

fraggle there is a smaller version of Mirena now designed for women who have not had children - not sure if available in the UK yet but definitely available in some European countries. Its called Skyla.

LaCerbiatta · 19/03/2015 15:16

They're the best thing ever! I'm having a bit of a nightmare to have mine removed at the moment as the threads have curled up but I still think they're the best thing ever and can't wait until i have a new one in!

Polyethyl · 19/03/2015 15:18

No periods. No pregnancy. No fuss. No mood swings. No hormonal reaction at all. I felt fine.

MozzchopsThirty · 19/03/2015 15:20

Love mine, this is my 3rd, soon to be removed for the 4th
The strings on this one have disappeared and had to be found on scan
I have mine removed and replaced under GA Smile

No periods, no PMT, I wouldn't use anything else

engeika · 19/03/2015 15:23

I had it for three years it was fine - no problems -took it out and got pregnant the following year. Had it put back after the birth. Out again when menopause arrived.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 19/03/2015 15:35

Mozzchops - will they do that on the NHS? I wouldn't mind being knocked out again when the time comes!

ManicPixieDream · 19/03/2015 15:36

I still get periods with mine but they are much lighter (breastfeeding didn't stop them either).

Will have another Mirena fitted when my 5 years is up.

Would recommend.

Hope you are ok OP, sounds like you've had a stressful time Flowers

DrFoxtrot · 19/03/2015 15:38

After the decision to divorce, having my mirena is one of the best decisions I've ever made Grin

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 19/03/2015 15:59

Manic - my periods didn't stop from breastfeeding either, came back exactly 4 weeks after both dcs, so maybe I'll still get them on the mirena.

And thanks, yes it's been horrible and traumatic but I'm trying not to be too glum about it all.

ManicPixieDream · 19/03/2015 16:06

Littlefluffy- I have no idea if the two are related, it's just other women don't seem to have periods when on Mirena or while BF. I got my hopes up both times. They are lighter though, which is a bonus. I've lost weight on it too (with controlled cals and exercise).

Onwards and upwards Cake

FunkyPeacock · 19/03/2015 16:07

I've had a mirena for nearly 10 years now (not the same one!)

I have had no hormonal side effects (weight gain, mood swings etc) and only have very light & infrequent periods

It is a much lower dose of hormone than the oral contraceptive

PHANTOMnamechanger · 19/03/2015 16:09

I love mine, I'm on my third, absolutely no problems with fitting or afterwards, and easy peasy very reliable contraception too.

I had it put in for very heavy periods though so I would happily put up with a few minor gripes to be rid of that curse!

MollyMaDurga · 19/03/2015 16:10

I've had this one for 5 years now, just started spotting a few days off andon the last couple of months. Having a new one later this year. Hmm. steel trap.. I haven't had any children and the fitting was a bit rough, will lokk out for the Skyla, thanks for the tip invisibleperson
I am very pleased with the thing though, no periods, no PMT which was a bit of a monster at times.

hattymattie · 19/03/2015 16:10

Have had the same one for seven years now - using it to go into menopause. It has been brilliant. I used to have really heavy periods - I stopped altogether with Mirena. No weight gain or mood problems at all. No more PMS.
