Looking at how a teacher marks homework is confusing me

OP posts:
MajesticWhine · 17/03/2015 10:33

No, I think you always multiply before you add. So it would be 14.

ChipDip · 17/03/2015 10:33

It's 14!

YokoUhOh · 17/03/2015 10:33

3x4=12

12+2=14

BODMAS (I seem to remember from primary school)

HadMyTwo · 17/03/2015 10:33

Multiplication comes before addition :)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations

honeysucklejasmine · 17/03/2015 10:34

No, multiplication first. Should have brackets really.
2 + (3x4)
2 + 12 = 14

WyldChyld · 17/03/2015 10:34

It's 14. Using BODMAS, you do multiplication before addition

AuntieStella · 17/03/2015 10:34

BODMAS!

There are rules in maths about which order you do the various bits of sums in. It's not left to right.

Multiplication/division come before addition/subtraction.

So first is 3x4 giving 12, then add the 2, giving 14.

sneepy · 17/03/2015 10:34

I had to get a book on it. Maths for mums and dads is good or the Usborne junior maths book.

In your equation, you do the multiplication first so 3x4=12 +2=14.

BathshebaDarkstone · 17/03/2015 10:35

No because you always multiply or divide before adding or subtracting. Try it on a calculator. It's 14.

richthegreatcornholio · 17/03/2015 10:35

Must HAVE

Moresmores · 17/03/2015 10:36

Easier when you see it with brackets 2 + (3 x 4)

HereIAm20 · 17/03/2015 10:41

Except Bodmas is now Bidmas. ??

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 17/03/2015 10:41

I would have thought 20 if there was no brackets. but ive never been very good at maths!!

Lazarusbal · 17/03/2015 10:41

Amazed that no one pulled up OP on their English.

Bunnyjo · 17/03/2015 10:42

If the sum was written as 2+3x4 or 2+(3x4) then the answer is 14.
if the sum was written as (2+3)x4 then the answer is 20.

I am assuming you mistakenly thought the addition came before the multiplication because of the order the sum was written, but in the absence of brackets it is always multiplication and division before addition and subtraction.

Lazarusbal · 17/03/2015 10:44

Ooops - well done rich. Utterly pointless award to you.

WayfaringStranger · 17/03/2015 10:45

I'm crap at maths but I knew this one!

MissBattleaxe · 17/03/2015 10:46

what rich said.

Nolim · 17/03/2015 10:46

Yabu

MajesticWhine · 17/03/2015 10:47

Are we a bunch of smuggies or what? (I got the answer right first though)

MissDuke · 17/03/2015 10:51

Lazarusbal, maybe because the post is about maths? If you don't like the grammar in the title DON'T OPEN THE POST!!!

Op, hopefully you get it now, it really is confusing when the brackets are omitted!

familymember · 17/03/2015 10:55

I would have said 20 too, poor ds is on his own with maths now Sad

Could someone explain BODMAS/BIDMAS please?

mousmous · 17/03/2015 10:56

yabu
everyone knows that division/multiplications comes before addition watches too much countdown

EsmereldaPB · 17/03/2015 10:58

BODMAS / BIDMAS is:

Brackets
powers Of / Indices
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction

NickiFury · 17/03/2015 11:00

Stop correcting grammar. It makes you look like a complete twat.

OP my Maths is shocking, huge gaps in education due to moving around. BODMAS is easy to learn though and changes everything Smile.
