If the sum was written as 2+3x4 or 2+(3x4) then the answer is 14.
if the sum was written as (2+3)x4 then the answer is 20.

I am assuming you mistakenly thought the addition came before the multiplication because of the order the sum was written, but in the absence of brackets it is always multiplication and division before addition and subtraction.

OP my Maths is shocking, huge gaps in education due to moving around. BODMAS is easy to learn though and changes everything .
