But why the fuss - what about St George/St David/St Andrew

is it because of the Crack, and the Guinness?

well yes it is.

Oohh darby o'gill! I havent seen that in years! Since i was about 7.

squoosh · 17/03/2015 11:02

If England, Scotland and Wales turned their national saint's days into public holidays I think they'd go less unnoticed.

Tapwater · 17/03/2015 11:09

Christ, does RTE still put on D'Arby O'Gill? And The Flight of the Doves?? Which for some reason had Noel Purcell playing a Rabbi in a St Patrick's Day parade singing 'You Don't Have to be Irish to be Irish? And Dana as the world's least likely traveller? And the two who played Fagin and The Artful Dodger as the leads?

squoosh · 17/03/2015 11:12

I used to love Flight of the Doves! Was terrified they'd fall into their stepfather's clutches before they made it to granny's house and a wholesome life of connemara air and brown bread.

squoosh · 17/03/2015 11:13

I don't remember Dana in it! That soils the memory somewhat.

Deedeecupcake · 17/03/2015 11:13

Tap--- Doves is on RTE 2 as we speak ??????????

gabsdot45 · 17/03/2015 11:36

The Quiet man is on this afternoon.

squoosh · 17/03/2015 11:39

I should hope so too.

Darby O'Gill and the Little People, The Flight of the Doves, and the Quiet Man is St Patrick's Day's answer to The Godfather I, II, and III.

SaucyJack · 17/03/2015 11:47

I'm a plastic Paddy who'll take any excuse to get pissed, so I'm a big fan of St Patrick's day meself.

KaffeOgKage · 17/03/2015 12:03

I hate all that Irish-American shite. Confusing the Leprechaun with St Patrick for example!! Why are there pictures of leprechauns everywhere!? argh.

Anyway, any Irish people know, would woodies be open today do you think? it says on the website 'open bank holidiays'.

toffeeboffin · 17/03/2015 12:16

Shit. Forgot to wear my four leaf clover scarf again this year! Happy St Patricks day everyone! Grin

SunnyBaudelaire · 17/03/2015 12:18

how I used to love St Patricks day back in south London we would have been dancing on the tables by now. Happy St Patricks day everyone!

Tapwater · 17/03/2015 12:56

Squoosh, you are so right about those films being the Irish Godfather trilogy. Grin Pure quality. Apart from the wife-beating. And Dana.

Yes, Dana is definitely in Flight of the Doves. Admittedly I haven't seen it since St Patrick's Day in about 1980 when it was sleeting at the parade and the mini hurlers and majorettes all had blue legs and my mother made us come home, but she plays a winsome traveller lass who bursts into song at the drop of a hat and smuggles the Artful Dodger and his little sister across the Shannon in her winsome musical caravan.

SurlyCue · 17/03/2015 12:57

Im afraid i am a shame to my heritage, i have never once had a drink on st paddy's day. Ive been a mum since it was legal to drink and have always had the dcs. Maybe their dad will take them one year and i can be really irish. Shamrock
