Unreasonable despair over chewing gum stuck to a knit jumper - help!!

I don't chew gum. No one in this house likes gum anyway.

Yet, horribly, a wad of gum of mysterious origin has teleported into our washing machine, melting all over the hood of a lovely new hoodie I received as a gift.

It's a lovely lightweight knit, and the label says cold water wash only. I'm unreasonably upset about this, as it was a favourite gift this Christmas and I loved it. The fabric is very fine, but the knit can pull a bit, making it seemingly impossible to get the melted gum off without ruining it.

Any ideas how I can attack this?

Any ideas what kind of gum-chewing gremlins are living in my washing machine?

Put it in the freezer overnight - that is supposed to make it easier to chip it off.

Or rub peanut butter into it - that worked when one of the dses came home with chewing gum stuck in their hair.

YANBU chewing gum is awful stuff! Especially when it threatens to ruin favourite clothes.

Chewing gum can usually be removed from clothes by freezing it, making it hard and therefore not sticky. Either put the jumper in the freezer for a few hours or sit a bag of frozen peas on it long enough to freeze the gum so that you can carefully pick it off.

I once read something about vinegar working on chewing gum as well, may be worth a Google search! Smile

Good luck!

Thank you - keep me in your sympathies as I try to peel frozen stranger-spit-moistened gum off my nice shirt!
