to call the police as a tree my neighbour hated has started dying in the last few weeks

My neighbour hates my trees, always complaining about them and has offered to pay to have them cut down, but I like the privacy they provide even though they are a bit ugly (golden cypress).

Last weekend I noticed it was going a bit brown, and its defiantly got worse. I'm sure they have poisoned one of them. Aibu to go to the police?

I hope you are logging everything...

Icicle do you really think that a 400 year old tree is the same as a golden Cypress? That's like someone 'borrowing' some gum and me telling them it's the same as stealing Faberge eggs.

I think the OP has gone to Sycamore sensible response elsewhere.
I think calling the "Copse" wins.

Spermysextowel · 14/03/2015 04:16

It took an embarrassingly long time for me to twig the copse pun.

Go on to the Royal Horticultural Society website - before you involve the police, try and make sure that the trees are not diseased. You could take a cutting to a garden centre or see if the local authority has a tree officer or some such who could advise. A tree surgeon might come and look - say you might want an estimate for cutting trees down or pruning, then ask what the problem might be.

Hoppinggreen · 14/03/2015 08:22

To be fair to OP it IS a bit of a coincidence.
Dh's Grandma was a champion tree killer - bleach on the roots was her favourite MO so it IS possible.

Sorry I also lived in darkness and leaves due to neighbours big fat ugly trees so I am sorry I think it's selfish to keep them when they bother others. Don't call the police! Call the council , who won't care unless there's chance of it hurting someone at some point

If you don't like large trees next to your house, then don't go living in a house next to some large trees! We used to live in a house with some 100 year old trees, and some newish houses just the other side of the trees, that were built 80 years after the trees were planted. FFS, just don't buy a house next to trees if you don't like them! Don't buy one and then expect the owners to chop down a bit of green lung just to suit your view!!

Sodium Chlorate used to be the ideal thing for killing absolutely anything although we only ever used it on weeds (honest!!)

Trouble is you can't get it any more ... unless anyone knows different??

duchesse We didn't move next to someone with large trees. They grew after we moved in and before we knew it the trees (Leylandi) totally put our garden in the shade. Some trees grow very fast. Our garden was in the shade for years and many of our plants died. The grass turned to moss and I couldn't enjoy sitting in the sun in the garden like I used to. The neighbour liked the tress because they provided her with privacy even though they were ugly. She didn't give a shit how we felt. Neighbour from hell.

duchesse · 14/03/2015 09:56

Oh, Leylandii are just disgusting and antisocial overgrown bushes. Don't count as trees in my book. In fact there should be a law against them- they are fair game for poisoners in my book.

duchesse · 14/03/2015 09:56

My comment was more about 100 year old deciduous trees.

I think that OPs trees are a variety of Leylandi rather than 100 year old deciduous trees though (otherwise known as Gold Rider Leyland Cypress).

The copse willow-nly palm you off with a lime excuse, OP. Back your neighbour into acorn-er else he maple this trick again.
