Because it happens all the time in academic science and it really gets my goat. Take more than 6 months off? Then forget your career (and have it significantly damaged even if you do return "on time") is the general message.

Please tell me it's better in other industries and not all women have to deal with this crap. It's just so depressing.

Generally, YANBU - however, if you think that this only happens in academic science, then YABU.

I am not in academia. My friends and I know that taking more than 4 months off is pretty much a career-killer in our industry.

Christ, that's depressing. I sometimes wonder what the point of maternity law is if everyone ignores them. If you're on any form of short term contract (as in academia) they have you over a barrel if you want it renewed.

It's so depressing how the law is ignored by women being pressured as you describe.
