Should the buyer or seller pay the PayPal fee?

Last week I bought a crib from an online classified ads website. The seller stated that they wanted payment via PayPal. I duly sent them the requested amount. Later they contacted me to say that PayPal had deducted money (just over £1) from the amount I sent to cover their fee and they wanted me to pay extra to cover this amount. AIBU to refuse to do this as they asked me to pay via PayPal and should have been aware that there will be a charge for this?

I used to be on a facebook pushchair page where people were selling/ buying and there buyer always covered paypal fees or the fees were included in the price.

No, the seller pays it.
They set their price with that in mind.

Don't pay it.

Whoops pressed piss too soon. I think that the buyer should have stated that they want fees covered in the ad though. Asking for a pound after the sale is rude.

Post not piss ffs!

expatinscotland · 12/03/2015 09:17

Wouldn't pay it. If they get arsey about it, get your money back.

Seller should pay - especially if they're dictating the payment method! They should be smart enough to either factor in the paypal fee in the first place, or state in the advert for sale that the fee should be covered by the buyer. Don't give them another penny. And if it's an ebay seller, I'd add feedback regarding they're unreasonable request.

Stinkersmum · 12/03/2015 09:18

their, not they're! Really, why is there no edit function on MN???

RandomNPC · 12/03/2015 09:21

It's the fault of the seller, they should set the cost to cover the fee. It's not your problem.

I sell through Paypal and the seller always pays the fee. They are taking the piss!

As others have said they should have worked the fee in to the selling price.

I see this on a lot of Facebook groups

'PayPal by friends and family only'

Err I think not. When I'm paying a stranger for something I'm bloody covering my arse if it doesn't arrive! You can't claim item not received on a friend and family payment.

As has been said, fees should be factored into the price.

are they sending by courier - if you are collecting you should pay cash after you have inspected it anyway. If you want to return it you would need to send it tracked before you got a refund.
