Aibu to think that Winnie the Pooh wallpaper is okay for a 6 and 7 year olds bedroom?

Just found a really cute wallpaper for my kids new bedroom in our new house, it's Winnie the Pooh, tigger, piglet and eyore all sleepy on moons, stars and clouds. My daughter is just 7 and my son is nearly 6. They will be sharing a big room for the first year or so and it's really hard to find something unisex and I do really want to use wallpaper. Just told my mum (who detests kids "character" bedroom themes) and she said it sounds like wallpaper for a baby's room! Don't know what to do, I think it's sweet wallpaper, my daughter likes it and my son (who has autism and much younger in himself than his actual age) does not really care as long as he can still have some Thomas the tank engine pictures up. All the other nice wallpapers I have found are about 70 pounds a roll and I will need to buy pink for one side of the room and blue for the other, the Winnie wallpapers about 10pounds a roll. It's my last chance to do a young children's bedroom as when my daughter moves into her own room over the next couple of years she will probably want something more grown up by then. Aibu to think Winnie is okay for my kids or am I treating them like babies? Should they have something more grown up now?

I personally think Winne the pooh is far too babyish.

There is no way my 7 year old would want it. We are just redoing his room and removing all the Lightning McQueen and Buzz lightyear stuff which is now too babyish in his eyes. We are having a very lightly themed star wars room but its really just white, navy and light blue with dark wooden furniture (which should hopefully last him until he leaves home), two large star wars canvas movie posters from the original movies and a vintage star wars duvet cover. It will very easily convert so that it is no longer star wars themed just by switching out the large canvases and the bedding.

If you're really intent on winnie the pooh then I'd go for a neutral wallpaper and use pooh accents that can easily be changed because I suspect your DD will suddenly decide overnight in the not too distant future (probably due to a comment from someone at school) that pooh is for babies and she needs you to change the room NOW!!!

They're verging on too old for that. You'll be redecorating in a year or so.

notnaice · 12/03/2015 08:46

Just one comment from a visiting child and they'll be pestering for it to be changed. Or they'll outgrow it very quickly themselves.

Stick to neutral. I wouldn't even put up stickers. Just put up some pictures/photos with frames you like. You can change the pictures inside as often as you like. Let the kids choose duvet covers and bedside light shades. It doesn't matter if they match or not. They will each have a bit of their own personality in the room. They can also choose the pictures/photos for the pictures closest to their beds.

Does sound babyish tbh.

Plain colour and let your DS have his Thomas pictures and DD whatever she wants to jazz it up with too. Sorted.

It is far too babyish. If they don't think so; you can bet their friends will...

It's for a couple of years - your DD likes it, and your DS doesn't mind, as long as he can have some Thomas pictures. Then go for it - it's not for ever, when you DD has her own room she will be bigger and can choose something else.

I am a bit sad about people saying four year olds think Winnie the Pooh is babyish. Maybe the Disney version, but the A A Milne stories have lots to offer children much older than four, and are beautifully written.

I don't think you should always do everything based on what other children outside your family may say or think. Children grow up at different rates. At 10/11 my DD still liked dolls houses, playmobil, cuddly toys, as well as other 'older' things. At 7 she'd have loved Winnie the Pooh wallpaper. Some of her friends were seemingly much more 'grown up' others weren't. We had lots of children round to play and sleep over - and they all played quite happily with apparently 'young' toys. My DD was never embarrassed by her choices - she liked what she liked and she grew up at her own pace.

BathshebaDarkstone · 10/09/2015 12:26

I think it's a bit young.

Id paint it one colour then put pictures be it winnie the pooh in frames or else you might be redecorating in 1-2 years.

klmnop · 10/09/2015 12:54

Sorry, but I have to say Winnie The Pooh sounds babyish. I've had experience working with Kids character licences and would say we're talking pre school appeal really. My daughter is nearly 4 and wouldn't be interested in Winnie The Pooh. I think the plain walls with prints ideas are good, easier to update, or maybe wall stickers?

Getuhda348 · 10/09/2015 13:35

My son will be 2 when we moved early next year. He loves peppa pig and dinosaurs. So I'm painting his walls plain bit using wall transfers so when he decides he's had enough it won't cost me a fortune. He's got a dinosaur lamp and duvet set and a peppa clock and teddy's. I think accessories are the way to go.

sproketmx · 10/09/2015 13:52

Mine wouldn't like it. They were over pooh and mickey before age 2. Now it's all monster trucks and motorbikes. 6 and 7 does sound a bit old tbh but it's really up to them. Have you asked them to pick something?

Dieu · 10/09/2015 14:00

My 6 year old girl would be mortified (sorry!), but then she has older sisters so has perhaps grown up a little faster then her peers. Be prepared to redecorate next year as even if your wee ones like it, they may be embarrassed in their friends' eyes ...

MiddleAgedandConfused · 10/09/2015 14:15

I'm sure it is OK now, but in a couple of years it won't be. So if you don't mind redecorating in a few years, go for it.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 10/09/2015 14:29

My 8 yo DD would have been mortified to have friends round to play in her room if it had such cutesie young wallpaper last year. She is into Harry Potter and Minecraft. Even as a 3 year old I would have thought Winnie the pooh was too babyish for her.

I imagine your dd might be taking your lead on this and is so excited about a newly decorated room and your enthusiasm for this paper that she is going along with it, but I'm sure if she had her own choice she would choose characters that she is likely to be fond of for a bit longer.

And if your ds likes thomas then I don't understand why he's not having thomas paper/pics on his side. All of the AS children I know have very specific tastes and interests and it would be nice to think you were engaging in those rather than trying to palm him off with something you like because it's cheaper than the £70 Shock wallpapers you've found.

I'm another one baffled by the apparent need for a blue half and a pink half of the room too. You do realise pink is not COMPULSORY for girls right?

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 10/09/2015 14:33

ah well spotted exex, hadn't registered the date - oops!

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 10/09/2015 14:40

I asked my 6yo and he said it's too babyish. He would rather have Spider-Man, superheroes or Lego ninjago.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 10/09/2015 14:41

Young 6 by the way as just turned six in July.
