Aibu to think that Winnie the Pooh wallpaper is okay for a 6 and 7 year olds bedroom?

Just found a really cute wallpaper for my kids new bedroom in our new house, it's Winnie the Pooh, tigger, piglet and eyore all sleepy on moons, stars and clouds. My daughter is just 7 and my son is nearly 6. They will be sharing a big room for the first year or so and it's really hard to find something unisex and I do really want to use wallpaper. Just told my mum (who detests kids "character" bedroom themes) and she said it sounds like wallpaper for a baby's room! Don't know what to do, I think it's sweet wallpaper, my daughter likes it and my son (who has autism and much younger in himself than his actual age) does not really care as long as he can still have some Thomas the tank engine pictures up. All the other nice wallpapers I have found are about 70 pounds a roll and I will need to buy pink for one side of the room and blue for the other, the Winnie wallpapers about 10pounds a roll. It's my last chance to do a young children's bedroom as when my daughter moves into her own room over the next couple of years she will probably want something more grown up by then. Aibu to think Winnie is okay for my kids or am I treating them like babies? Should they have something more grown up now?

I wouldnt want my walls covered in poo...

BabyDubsEverywhere · 11/03/2015 23:26

My 7 year old DS and 6 year old DD would be mortified at winnie the pooh wall paper. Its all One Direction and Marvel Super heroes here, sadly!

NobodyLivesHere · 12/03/2015 04:24

My 7yo would think it childish. I would get a stripey wallpaper and then pictures they liked that can easily be changed as they get older

I would not put up a themed wallpaper, but something more like the stars wallpaper someone linked to. Here are some gender neutral children's rooms on pinterest. www.pinterest.com/hellobee/gender-neutral-rooms/

Even nicer ones here. (with some repeats from first link)

I love the travel one with the world map, and all the nature ones.

I have an 11 month old and his nursery is Winnie the Pooh Grin

Madamecastafiore · 12/03/2015 06:00

You can get some fab Quentin Blake wallpaper which is more grown up and unisex or the ones with picture frames printed on that you colour in.

waithorse · 12/03/2015 06:47

If they like it then use it. But I know my 7 year old would find it ti young. I love Winnie though.

How often do you intend to re-decorate?

Because what is lovely at 7 is an embarrassment at 11 (but could be cool at 15).

ShadowStone · 12/03/2015 07:18

I think it's on the babyish side.

I think there's a good chance that a 6 / 7 yr old would outgrow it very quickly and be wanting new, more grown up wallpaper within a year or so.

Personally, I would go with neutral wallpaper, and accessorize with Winnie the Pooh stickers / pictures that can be easily removed when they grow out of it.

TheLeftovermonster · 12/03/2015 07:25

I sort of agree with your mother on character wallpaper.

QueenFuri · 12/03/2015 07:35

My 4yo wouldn't be happy with it.

parallax80 · 12/03/2015 07:38

I will need to buy pink for one side of the room and blue for the other,

YABU for this alone.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 12/03/2015 07:43

My 6 year old thinks Winnie the Pooh is babyish. But why on earth do you think they will 'need' pink and blue wallpaper in future?

tumbletumble · 12/03/2015 07:48

My 9yo DS and 7yo DD share a room. They have plain cream walls and they have chosen their own duvet covers. That works well because they each got to choose - I couldn't have let them choose if we had patterned wallpaper as well, it would have ended up as a big clash of colours!

SoupDragon · 12/03/2015 07:55

I do think that for children of this age plain with easily changeable accessories and accents is better. They are fickle and their tastes change very quickly.

crazykat · 12/03/2015 08:00

It would be too babyish for my 7 year old dd, even my 4 year old dd would say it's for babies.

I'd either get wallpaper with a neutral pattern or put decent lining paper up and paint it. You can then personalise it with pictures and posters of whatever they're in to.

My dcs change their minds about what they like every year or so and it's much cheaper and easier to paint the walls and buy new pictures and posters when they change their minds. I paint the room every few years to keep it looking nice.

saoirse31 · 12/03/2015 08:02

way too babyish.... can't see them wanting their friends to see it...

Stinkersmum · 12/03/2015 08:05

I have an aversion to anything themed or branded. Clothes, friezes, furnishings. All horrendous. And £70 a roll???? Seriously?

TheresACatInMeKitchen · 12/03/2015 08:06

My Dc's had outgrown Winnie the pooh by the age of about 4. May be ok in the short term but probably wont be so appreciative in a year or so.

We are prone to bedroom hopping here all of the bedrooms are painted white and we accessorise with duvet covers, cushions, curtains, pictures etc. That way its easy to change the whole colour scheme without too much hassle.
You could also get those vinyl wall stickers which are really easy to remove.

Why would you think that you have to do the pink/blue thing?
There's a whole range of colours out there . I have both boys and girls (all Teens) and we have yet to have a pink or blue bedroom!

AliceAnneB · 12/03/2015 08:10

Have a look at bouf. They have some great kids wallpaper. If you want to do it and you have the money and patience to do it over in a short period of time then go for it. But if it will be your sons room soon I would worry his friends might make fun of him for it.

SamanthaAndSamaris · 12/03/2015 08:18

My 7 year old would love it, and would excitedly tell her friends about it.
But she is never bothered about things being babyish or for babies. She'd probably think something being for babies was a good thing.

I would still probably go for plain paper though, because I think 20 years or so is a good interval between redecorating Grin.

londonrach · 12/03/2015 08:21

I think plain walls then pictures be it pooh or who ever of their choice as i suspect if you went with the wallpaper you have to redo it within a year.
