to call someone stupid for advocating torture

Last night I got into a very heated discussion about the woman who killed her three disabled children. One woman was so incensed about her actions she said this woman should be tortured as murder is wrong. I personally feel that you can't say murder is wrong (which it is, obviously) and then suggest torture as a form of punishment. I called her stupid and got myself a three month ban from the forum for my troubles. I am a little bit offended that advocating torture is ok but calling someone stupid results in a talking to and a ban.

I think your post is a bit distasteful as it identifies the woman.

However she deserves every help.

No matter how passionately you feel about a topic, or how wrong someone's views feel to you, IMO you run the risk of a ban for calling someone "stupid", depending how strictly they moderate. Presumably the forum moderator made that decision based on their published rules.

Unlikely to change your life, because you've been banned. Sometimes it's maybe best to walk away and have a cuppa?

CrystalCove · 10/03/2015 16:59

How does the OPs post identify who has said this about torture? Confused

Samcro · 10/03/2015 17:08

same think would happen here, not a ban but a deletion.
hers is a opinion
yours a personal attack.

MaidOfStars · 10/03/2015 17:55

I called her stupid

Next time, say "Your opinion is stupid". It's watertight.

Lovemycatsandkids · 10/03/2015 18:08

Sorry crystal yes re read it now. Apologies op.

butterfly2015 · 10/03/2015 18:10

I haven't identified anyone. It was not this forum and I have a different username here. I can't even remember the name of the stupid person but would not name her if I did.

I had tried being reasonable but she pushed my buttons by stating g she hoped the woman of the dead children read the thread so she would know how evil she thinks she is. My argument was that her remaining child could also find that but she didn't care. So imo she was stupid. I should, in retrospect, have walked away.

It is strange thinking murder is wrong but torture is okay but as people pointed out it was personal so that would be the reason for the ban. Surprised they ban so quickly though, most laces I see a 'three strikes' policy.

mommy2ash · 10/03/2015 18:13

i think you were wrong to call her stupid because she had an emotional kneejerk reaction to a horrible situation. its very difficult to verbalise how you feel when you read such horrible stories. our justice system sucks so wishing for something more extreme is a valid reaction.

its like when you hear about child abusers being raped in prison? do you feel sorry for the child abuser? i don't, i don't necessarily think its right but i wouldn't lose sleep over it happening. i wouldn't volunteer to do it myself but i don't feel sorry for them when they chose to inflict that on an innocent person to begin with. i will probably be flamed for that but its honestly how i feel.

butterfly2015 · 10/03/2015 18:21

I'd had a warning ages ago and then got banned for my second infringement. The first one wasn't for a personal attack but I accepted I'd done wrong and apologised.

I get your point mommy2ash but that's not demanding they are raped or wishing it on them but not bothering if it happens. I think in this case the situation was so unique and the woman was not evil or depraved but more at the end of her tether and ill. Those children were in pain constantly and although we've no idea why she did it, it could have been a case of ending their suffering. I can't condemn her but can't condone her actions. I don't think she should be lumped together with the likes of baby ps mum or the mother of the toddler who beat him repeatedly, left him to die and then dumped his body before saying he'd gone missing.

I do find it odd that some people can be so incensed about murder that their reaction is to demand barbaric torture, hanging, shooting and other equally murderous acts.

Well I dont think you're being unreasonable at all. I really have to bite my tongue when people are wishing rape/torture/slow painful death on criminals. Surely that makes them no better but the first time I said that to someone I was accused of defending murders etc so I give up. Some people just are stupid.

ilovechristmas1 · 10/03/2015 18:53

she does sound stupid

people on forums often use far more colourful language MN included

bit of an over reaction by the sounds, other forum not you op

mommy2ash · 10/03/2015 19:40

i think the difference that people see is people who murder or rape people do it to an innocent victim. wishing it on those who did wrong to begin with doesn't feel as wrong.

im not advocating for vigilantism but i can see why people feel that way and i mostly attribute it to how unsatisfactory our justice system is. when people are angry or upset they say things they might not mean if they thought it out logically. having something horrible happen to those who commit heinous crimes seems like a more just punishment than a few years having three meals a day while the victims live is over or ruined and their family are feeling the fallout for a very long time to come.

im not familiar with the case you are talking about so im not commenting specifically on that but in general

icedgem30 · 10/03/2015 20:04

Unless a case affects someone personally I cannot see any reason to wish torture/death on any stranger, no matter what they have done.

Our justice system puts people in prison, what more do you want it to do?

countessmarkyabitch · 10/03/2015 21:21

YABU for only calling her stupid. I would have called her a stupid hatefilled hypocritical twatbadger.

ILovePud · 10/03/2015 22:34

What she said was IMO horrible but she's just someone mouthing off on a forum so I don't get the argument that 'makes them no better' no better than what? No better than someone who had killed people? I don't think you were being unreasonable in calling her stupid, as you said it pushed your buttons but perhaps something about this tragic case had pushed buttons for her.
