AIBU to expect Emma Bridgewater mugs to last!

Would it be responsible to expect them to last longer then 2 seconds before the handle falls off. I've had 4 of the useless things fall apart! All cracking at the top of the handle.

I only buy them because of a deluded belief that tea tastes nicer in them.

(Stomps off to buy a new cheap mug)

I just picked up my favourite mug (gift from a friend about 8 years ago) to check the brand and it's a Dunoon one! That saves me going off to buy one to check this tea-to-air ratio.

Damnautocorrect · 11/03/2015 10:37

bath brilliant, thank you. Mention of cake is enough to get me there Grin

SoupDragon · 11/03/2015 10:41

Email Bridgewater. They are very helpful.

ClaireFraser · 11/03/2015 13:29

Melamine sponge (Lakeland sell it under the name 'magic sponge', or you can buy it on eBay for a fraction of the price) is brilliant at getting stains off mugs, plus a million and one other uses.

claraagain · 11/03/2015 13:35

Email Bridgewater. They are very helpful.

Sadly no longer the case. Used to be great. Now expect an auto reply and at least 2 weeks to get a response. the telephone staff are poorly trained. The company customer service has plummeted which I why with 200 mugs I will buy no more.

They should consider- treat those you meet on the way up well as you may meet them again on the way down

Too big for their boots I am afraid.

SoupDragon · 11/03/2015 13:36

More helpful than complaining on an unrelated website though. :)

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 11/03/2015 13:42

my EB mugs are fine, but I think tea tastes better in a cornishware mug!
H and I have personalised ones that the dc brought for Christmas.

the other mugs I have found that are great are £2 in waitrose! www.waitrose.com/shop/DisplayProductFlyout?productId=403243 not even £2 just seen they are £1! the ones I have are two tone though, but cant see them online, blue at the bottom fading to cream at the top.

ScrambledSmegs · 11/03/2015 13:53

The dunoon mugs are beautiful. I wants one.

expatinscotland · 11/03/2015 14:03

I had one and the handle also broke off. Never again.

2plus3 · 11/03/2015 14:47

Well am now the proud owner of two new mugs. A Jane foster and an Orla Kiely, both fine china and rather jolly. I have yet to test them!
I like the Waitrose mug linked above, it's vegetarian which is alway a consideration when buying mugs Grin

Funny you should mention it. I have a few where the glaze has crazed - all the flower ones - RHS I think, but the few I've lost have had the same problem with the handle snapping off. Oh apart from the personalised 1 pint red stars one which DH bought me for my 40th birthday from the Ds's - my birthday was a few weeks after DS2 was born and I was a hormonal mess.I loved that mug - DH dropped it on the kitchen floor - smashed to smithereens. I actually criedBlush - he promised to replace it but never did and they don't do the red stars anymoreSad

clarehhh · 21/12/2017 18:01

Red stars available now

ToadOfSadness · 21/12/2017 18:22

I can never get a good cup of tea in a china mug.

Over the years I have had a variety of mugs that have been perfect, they are thicker and a bit heavier and have always been broken by someone.

I get the best tea from the cheap white IKEA stacking mugs, they used to be about 35p each ( a good few years ago). They are not pretty but I can fit a lot more of them in the cupboard. They have to be white ones.

mygorgeousmilo · 21/12/2017 19:23

Quality issues aside, I’m just so glad there are other people out there who believe that tea tastes better/different depending on the cup. I thought it was just me!

rudolphslittlehelper · 21/12/2017 19:34

I have 200 EB mugs- about 5 have broken over about 3O years. I use them for strawberries in the garden,

KathArtic · 21/12/2017 20:25

I love the Dunoon mugs...is it a bit late for Christmas now??

We have a cupboard of random mugs and I have to say tea does taste different in each one, so my choice of mug depends on my mood and time of day. DH never gets it right.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 21/12/2017 20:50

Emma Bridgewater mugs do make tea taste better. Fine bone china is actually hopeless for tea. I never use any of my "good" china.

Readermumof3 · 22/12/2017 08:09

😂😂 I couldn't work out why the threads appeared in my "threads you are on" 🤔 That's because I replied in 2015 😂

Ali2019 · 22/07/2020 14:28

Hello, Just restarting this thread as the Emma Bridgewater Mug Handle issues still seems to be a real issue.

If you have images of your broken Emma Bridgewater mug handle would you mind uploading with some details about the age of the mug and when the handle dropped off?

Here's an example of one

Brought: Oct 2019
Broke: May 2020

thank you,

AIBU to expect Emma Bridgewater mugs to last!
Purplepie78 · 22/07/2020 14:33

My mum is a potter and apparently things are fired at different temperatures (or something like that ) and that depends on how easily they chip or break . I replaced al my cups, plates and bowls with Denby stuff. I’ve broken one bowl in 8 years. I have granite worktop and the cheap asda stuff was always getting chipped when I banged it against the worktop.

bravotango · 22/07/2020 14:53

I actually really rate the John Lewis croft ones - they've lasted an age and are a normal size (not a flipping bucket like half the mugs on offer)

bravotango · 22/07/2020 14:54

Oops - didn't read the update. My bad!

honeygirlz · 22/07/2020 16:17

Why does water taste to awful from a mug?

HexyAndIKnowIt · 22/07/2020 17:16

You want these ones:

BitsAndBaubles · 22/02/2022 16:11

You could always get a candle refill for your old mug at www.cantocandle.com/product/candle-refill/
