AIBU to expect Emma Bridgewater mugs to last!

Would it be responsible to expect them to last longer then 2 seconds before the handle falls off. I've had 4 of the useless things fall apart! All cracking at the top of the handle.

I only buy them because of a deluded belief that tea tastes nicer in them.

(Stomps off to buy a new cheap mug)

E. B. kids stuff is sturdy and generally survives the massive kicking it all gets with 3 young children.

I'm not crazy about the 'grown up' stuff. I prefer Le Crueset blue mugs. A nice 'Saturday' mug, I find. My favourite tea cups are from Past Times and a Laura Ashley end of line so can't replace them.

I like the odd bit of Bridgewater but not a massive fan. Cath Kidson stuff is very often poor quality, I think stares harshly at stupid faded bento box

straighttothepoint · 10/03/2015 19:56

My newer mugs have handles falling iff, the glaze cracking, and generally poor quality. The older ones are going strong. They must have change production as they are crap now and definitely not worth the money.

Bath I stumbled across Aston pottery's website recently when I was over that way visiting family looking at places to go. Is it worth a visit?

Hoppinggreen · 10/03/2015 21:31

Handle fell off mine after about a month.

Laquila · 10/03/2015 21:34

Mine have all lasted very well, despite very frequent dishwashering (and most of them are seconds from the factory shop...)

tilliebob · 10/03/2015 21:35

I've given up on EB mugs. All my handles snapped in the same fecking place within days of each other, like some finely organised mug massacre. I second Dunoon pottery that a PP mentioned. They're still going strong after years and years of being in a house with my cack handed kids.

kirkby1 · 10/03/2015 21:42

I've had 4 and similar problem, the handles all broke. I realised why - the curve of the handle is slightly proud of the mug top, so when upside down eg dishwasher, drainer etc, all the weight is on the handle. I looked at buying some other EB patterns in the shops, but the designs are all the same. Sticking to clumpy, heavy but durable denby mugs

2plus3 · 10/03/2015 21:50

Good point kirkby maybe I should put them in the dishwasher on their side!
Will have a look at all the links, and I'm off to John Lewis tomorrow to see what they have there!
Shame I can't sample them first, but I might get funny looks!!

The Aston and Dunoon mugs look lovely, thanks for the suggestions. Will revisit if my trip to JL is not successful. Mumsnet to the rescue yet again
Thank you

Don't say this op!

I had a much loved EB mug and the handle spontaneously fell off. My daughter hunted high and low for a replacement of this now discontinued mug and I will be livid if the same thing happens again.

ClaireFraser · 10/03/2015 22:21

I have numerous EB mugs, some new and some old, most of which came from the factory shop and they are in and out of the dishwasher every day and I have never had one break, plus my DH is a heavy handed farmer who sometimes sneaks them outside Angry
I do store them right way up in the cupboard though, rather than upside down iyswim. Like a pp mentioned, the handles do sit slightly proud and I wonder if storing them upside down stresses the pottery.
All my China is eb and I can't rate it highly enough for durability.

BigFatFurryCatPuss · 10/03/2015 22:23

I have far too many CK and EB mugs and aside from the one i dropped on the stone floor they're all still going strong, some are years old. Dishwasher and all.

Waltonswatcher · 10/03/2015 22:30

I've given up on nice mugs . I break them all or they stain too quickly and irritate me with needing soaking . I'm now into cheapo ikea plain crappy ones . Sadly they out live all the tasteful pricey ones.

Tobyjugg · 10/03/2015 22:56

Either very expensive or very cheap is the way to go with mugs - they both last for ages. Middle priced ones never last. Well that was my DM's theory and we're still using her's.

SwirlyThingAlert · 11/03/2015 00:03

Interesting thread. I got a lovely Emma Bridgewater mug a year or two ago that broke recently. I was just washing it up, by hand, as you do and the handle just suddenly snapped clean off!
Never thought much of it as thought it was me being rough but if it's happening to other people in the exact same place then there's got to be something wrong somewhere..

BringMeTea · 11/03/2015 00:08

Hmmm. My EB mugs bought as wedding present ok but had under a year. Le creuset mugs great but as others have said not really for tea. So thanks to this thread I have just placed an order with Dunoon. You terrible enablers. Smile

BrightBlowsTheBroom · 11/03/2015 00:22

Not deluded at all. Fact. I have several not had any problems other than the odd case of stupidity on my part dropping them on a tiled floor.

LocalEditorBarnetEnfield · 11/03/2015 00:29

Ooh I bought one last year and after only two uses, while I was drinking from it the main section fell off and I was left with the handle in my hand! Should have taken it back it seems - obvious design flaw

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 11/03/2015 02:08

Someone needs to tweet this thread or bring it to EB's attention somehow - seems like a design flaw they should investigate ??

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 11/03/2015 02:10

And now I'm getting EB adverts in my sidebar Angry

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 11/03/2015 02:52

I have EB mugs, not had a problem so far.

My new favourite mugs area Dunoon though, really beautiful to drink out of and so lightweight. Some one linked to them on here's a while back and now I'm hooked.

I love a decent mug.

fabuleux · 11/03/2015 09:31

Maybe hanging them off a mug tree would weaken the handle as well? I only store my mugs the right way up and in a cupboard now.

BathTangle · 11/03/2015 09:46

Aston is a lovely place to visit: great cafe with amazing cakes and the shop has so much more than just their pottery. Great gifts and toys, cards, nice foody stuff and home stuff like cushions etc. Also lovely gardens in spring and summer.

MuddlePuddle · 11/03/2015 10:23

I have a couple of Le Creuset mugs (a charity shop bargain!) they are definitely built to last. I have had a couple of CK mugs that didn't last at all.

Apparently tea tastes better from a bone china mug because the rim is thinner and when you drink tea it gives a better air to tea ratio so improves the taste.

LordJabuJabu · 11/03/2015 10:27

We have a mix of le crueset &, oddly, the cheapest mugs Wilkinson/Wilkos sell, they're under £1 but sturdy & thick. Honestly prefer them to the Le Creuset ones!
