CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 10/03/2015 17:59

Putting butter on a scone along with cream will be punishable by 10 years hard labour when I rule the world

ShatnersBassoon · 10/03/2015 18:00

What's the fastest cake in the world?

I rest my case.

CornishYarg · 10/03/2015 18:06

In view of my nickname, I'm predictably going to chip in with a vote for jam then cream. Absolutely no butter. Strawberry jam is the popular choice for Cornish cream teas but I prefer raspberry. (With seeds. Seedless raspberry jam is an abomination.)

JennyOnTheBlocks · 10/03/2015 18:06

exactly, Shatners

ninetynineonehundred · 10/03/2015 18:10

Whereas the cornish aren't bad at pasties, they've never really got the hang of doing cream teas correctly.

Cream, then jam Obviously (Devon lass here)

And it rhythms with gone.

Going to make some for breakfast tomorrow after reading this thread

SoupDragon · 10/03/2015 18:13

Out of interest, what else does Scone rhyme with?

IvanOsokin · 10/03/2015 18:19

Cold butter on a scone (rhymes with bone) here - thick enough for teeth marks, then strawberry jam with a dollop of cream on top.

ShatnersBassoon · 10/03/2015 18:21

It rhymes with one and don, at least in my accent. Not all -one words rhyme. Gone, done, lone.

SueChef · 10/03/2015 18:24

Yanbu op for your order of butter -jam - cream. Perfect.

YABU for making me want to eat scones RIGHT NOW Angry

SoupDragon · 10/03/2015 18:26

One rhymes with gun. As does none and done.

Cone, phone, bone, lone, scone, tone, hone and zone.

iklboo · 10/03/2015 18:27

From Oxford Dictionaries:

What does become clear, throughout the world, is how few people are willing to use both pronunciations. Most of us have strong opinions on the subject. And, since it’s not a debate that can ever be settled (both pronunciations are in common usage, and neither is ‘wrong’) we’ll just have to continue squabbling about it. Just be careful whom you invite to tea.

So, I'll just call it a Bernard from now on. But, wait. Is that BER-nard, or Ber-NARD?

Snoozybird · 10/03/2015 18:33

Stork, jam then cream Grin

Bettercallsaul1 · 10/03/2015 18:41

Soup I would never trust the judgement or opinion of anyone who thinks scone rhymes with gone.

I think you mean anyone who knows scone rhymes with gone. Grin

DarkBlueEyes · 10/03/2015 18:55

STORK? Firing squad.....

londonrach · 10/03/2015 19:05

You all wrong! Why waste a perfect good scone with that yukkie cream and jam. Freshly cooked scone with fruit with good quality butter! Now you talking...

SoupDragon · 10/03/2015 19:56

I think you mean anyone who knows scone rhymes with gone.

Which proves my point that their opinions are worthless Wink

Bettercallsaul1 · 10/03/2015 20:16

Some Dragons should stick to soup and not venture into the unknown province of baked goods. (old Chinese proverb)

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/03/2015 20:17

Stork FFS. No, just no.

And it's cream then jam. Clotted cream, not whipped, which is an abomination in a cream tea.

Scone rhymes with gone.

SoupDragon · 10/03/2015 21:18

And users with numbers in their nicknames rarely show any wiseness.

Ancient Clanger proverb.

bumbleymummy · 10/03/2015 21:32

It's either butter then jam OR jam then cream. All 3? No no no :)

Bettercallsaul1 · 10/03/2015 21:51

Sadly, MN wouldn't let me have my name without the number attached. I was, of course, aware of the Ancient Clanger proverb.

Bettercallsaul1 · 10/03/2015 21:55

So, since I had no choice, I am really numberless and therefore not within the influence of the otherwise irrefutable Clanger proverb.

However, scone still rhymes with gone.

ninetynineonehundred · 10/03/2015 22:42

I think we can all at least agree that snoozybird is wrong with her stork addition Smile

In fact I may just have to report her post it's so vile

DramaAlpaca · 10/03/2015 22:44

OP, YANBU.

It's butter, then jam, then cream.

The jam has to be raspberry or blackcurrant.

And scone rhymes with gone.

AryaOfWinterfell · 10/03/2015 23:32

Another vote for jam then cream. Anything else is just wrong!

I grew up in Cornwall & waitressed quite a bit when I was younger, I had one woman shout at me when I bought her a cream tea because she insisted that a Cornish Cream Tea consisted of a cup of tea with clotted cream instead of milk Shock
