We have had endless phone calls from a company telling us they can claim back some money for old endowment policies,

Today I've had 3 phone calls, one of them demanding to speak to DH even tho I told them he wasn't in. The man accused me of lying and said he wouldn't get off the line until I fetched DH
I told him he would have a long wait and put the phone on the table, every time I listened in he was still on the line Shock he then accused me of being rude!

We have told them we arnt interested in what they are offering and ask them to take our number off their list, but no, they keep on calling!!

Today they phoned from a different number which was a silent call, but on googling I see it's the same company Emcas

Where do these people get off??!! Angry

You need a whistle, every time they call blow it down the phone

PintofCiderPlease · 09/03/2015 18:17

Read this - it gives you some very good advice on how to deal with these calls.

It is illegal for them to continue to call you once you have told them to stop calling you.

DozyDonut · 09/03/2015 18:17

Do you know what lolli I don't think even that would stop them!
This bloke was seriously on the line for a good 15 minutes while I ate my tea. He just kept repeating 'I'm not getting off the line until you get your DH'
Like some kind of crazed robot!

I would like to report him but don't know where to start tbh

They are breaking the law now as you have explicitly asked them to remove you from their database and they are still calling so you should report them to the Information Commisioners Office. Look at the Ofcom website for I for regarding dealing with nuisance calls. I've copied this info from the website -

Complain to the ICO

You can complain to the ICO by:

ringing their helpline: 0303 123 1113
going online:
or by post: Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF
There was a case a little while back where a man took a company like this to court for wasting his time and claimed money to compensate. They settled out of court! Can't remember who it was but it was a big company - I'll ask my DP as he's a consumer rights nut!!

Allstoppedup · 09/03/2015 18:22

I wouldn't do the above as you could genuinely do some damage to someone's hearing, not everyone who calls will be being rude. Your number will be on a dialler and its people just doing a job. I've done it when I was on the bones of my ads poor and I hated every call but it's the company and their dialler that is the problem not the individual calling. Individuals can sometimes put a number back for a recall, which the rude member of staff may have done but most will automatically put in for a redial if a sale isn't registered as agreed on the system.

That said, they are being incredibly intrusive and are acting illegally and you DO not have to put up with it at all. Ask to speak to a manager/senior member of staff and advise them of the rude member of staff, explain that you are reporting the company to Ofcom as their contact has crossed over to harrassment and you have repeatedly requested to be removed from their list which is a legal requirement if asked. Ask for their escalated complaints procedure and they should have to supply it.

Have you a toddler? Give them the phone. Grin

Greydog · 09/03/2015 18:34

Don't blow a whistle down the phone - you could be sued for causing acoustic shock to the caller. Can you get a caller display system? Or an old fashioned answermachine that lets you screen calls?

DozyDonut · 09/03/2015 18:53

No toddler here but have a moody teen who could grunt him to death Grin

I can laugh it off but what about pensioners who get sucked in thinking it's something serious that they need to answer?

Have you spoken to your phone company?

As repeated ringing, refusing to get off the line being rude can be seen as harassment. They are capable and will in the right circumstances. Put you on a screening thing were all your calls go to one of there operators who answer for you, for a week any friendly regular numbers who call
You, you give to your phone company so those calls come straight through To you.
If you forget someone the operator rings you and asks if they are ok to put the call through.

DozyDonut · 09/03/2015 19:06

I have just reported them online to the ICO
If they phone again I will take it further
