Ok I need some advice in a slightly awkward situation. ... slightly odd elderly neighbour lives next door to me. His wife has been getting v v upset about cats using their lawn as a toilet....I get on well with my other neighbours . Odd neighbour told me had sprinkled slug pellets on lawn to poison the cats Shock

What do I do......

  1. approach odd neighbour but he's v unapproachable. .....
  2. tell nice neighbours to keep their cats in ?! But unrealistic and they are likely to go to odd neighbour and have a go ?? If they do odd neighbour will know I told them and I have to live next to him.....If I don't cats might be poisoned. .. Help !!!!!!!

Are you actually scared of the off neighbour? If not then I'd say approach him and tell him that his actions are not on, and that you're going to tell the cat-owners. And definitely tell them if he doesn't relent. If he's likely to harass you then I'd go to the cat-owners directly but tell them you're scared of the odd neighbour so don't want them to approach him. It's not a nice situation, but you'll feel really bad if the cat does end up being poisoned!

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 07/03/2015 18:03

When you say 'odd', how so?

I'd warn the neighbours with cats, I have a couple myself and would like the heads up.

BooChunky · 07/03/2015 18:04

Do cats eat them then??

I put slug pellets in all my pots and my neighbours have cats that are constantly in my garden Blush

BooChunky · 07/03/2015 18:06

(And I like them - my DD's love watching them walk around out there!)

morethanpotatoprints · 07/03/2015 18:10

I use slug pellets all over our garden because we get loads of the blighters.
I also sprinkle round the perimeter of the house as we have had them come in.
We get the odd stray cat come through our garden and have never seen them eat any pellets. Are cats attracted to them and do they harm them?

Alfiedoggy · 07/03/2015 18:12

Yes I'm a vet and they can be fatal to cats ...cats like them as they taste nice Sad yes I'm. A bit scared of him he's often drunk

Most slug pellets are designed to repel animals eating them. Except slugs, of course. I've used slug pellets around chickens, cats and dogs and never had any problems.

morethanpotatoprints · 07/03/2015 18:14

So what do you do then?
I don't know who the cats belong to, will just have to ask around.
Maybe folk should keep their cats in then as so many people use slug pellets.
Ther are quite a few round here who have prize plants and veggies they show or put in competitions, they use them too.

Isithappening · 07/03/2015 18:18

They are entitled to use slug pellets in their own garden. Most slug pellets are supposed to be not appealing to cats and domestic pets.
I would be furious if I had a slug problem and was trying to grow vegetables or plants and some neighbour came along and told me I couldn't use slug pellets. If the cat owners are so concerned then they should keep their cats indoors.

TywysogesGymraeg · 07/03/2015 18:18

But loads of gardens must be littered with slug pellets. Just getting one neighbour to stop putting them down won't really solve much will it?

PatrickStarisabadbellend · 07/03/2015 18:36

I cover my front and back garden in slug pellets to protect my flowers. We have lots of cats in our street and a few come in my garden.

I can't see me stopping using them...

TheresACatInMeKitchen · 07/03/2015 18:38

Everyone is entitled to use slug pellets in their own garden if it is to actually control a slug problem. You cant stop cats wandering in if their owners decide to let them roam.

I don't use pellets in my own garden as I have cats as do a lot of the Neighbours but I do let my cats out, i cannot control what anyone else does in their garden. it a chance you take.

but this guy has said it is to "poison the cats" I am sure that if the cats were to become seriously ill or worse die a painful death then that would be an offence.
If someone round here told me this was happening then I would do anything in my power to stop cats going into their garden.
I would warn your nice cat neighbours first OP and if the guy kicks off then you will have each other for back up.

Alfiedoggy · 07/03/2015 18:45

I think there is a difference between a few pellets on veggie patches and lots put purposely down to kill cats. It's a horrible death . You can buy animal fuendly pellets which are a far more civilised alternative. Thank you I'm going to tell nice neighbours and send dh round to odd one Grin

Well, having stood in a nice cat poop this afternoon - courtesy of one of my neighbours cats, I can understand her frustration. It may be unreasonable to say this, as I know there isn't a lot to be done, but it does boil my piss. Saying that - there is a difference between using a few to kill some slugs and having the intent to kill someone's pet. So - I would tell the cat neighbour, and also tell the odd neighbour that I had passed on the information. I would frame it as though I had done so to allow the cat neighbours to decide what to do in everyone's best interest. Don't be scared - you aren't being unreasonable. And if you do it this way, he can't accuse you of sneaking around talking behind his back.

Ruperta · 07/03/2015 20:13

My mum has cars and uses slug pellets - never been a problem. I know my neighbour also uses pellets & my moggy seems fine.

UncommonSense · 07/03/2015 20:16

Cat owners that allow their 'pets' to roam and shit on other peoples property are unreasonable.

If people want pets (any pets) they should be controlled and limited to their own property. Why the fuck should other people have to clear up after them? Selfish pricks.

Sounds like I should take my 'slug problem' much more seriously! Grin

Naty1 · 07/03/2015 21:00

The cat poo is not just disgusting but also being pg a concern about toxo, as it can be all over driveway, ive previously almost trodden it into car, so could end up on pushchair, my shoes and toddler.
Too many cats for the space in the gardens.
Cat repellant is expensive (considering ive not chosen to have a pet) and washes away. Noise repellants dont work.
I like cats. But they need to be trained to bury it.
They shouldnt be going on the lawn, its horrid if you have kids.
I didnt realise slug repellant would hurt them and have to say assume its unlikely as if so they shouldnt be able to sell it as 90% of people must have cat visitors.

UncommonSense · 07/03/2015 21:08

Naty1 "They need to be trained to bury it" does not go far enough. the little tickets bury it in my gravel and its a royal pain in the arse.

They need to be trained too shit only in their own property. if this is not possible they should not be allowed out. They are an antisocial pet for selfish wankers.

I hate slug pellets and wouldn't use them - nothing to do with cats...
My nightmare next door neighbour graveled his garden and had lots of pots - he also built a wall with lots of indents on the border.
I deliberately had mine as soil and plants - wildlife friendly. Left a bit overgrown etc. We had a song thrush (watched it breaking snail shells), a toad and regular visits from hedgehogs. The snails used to shelter in the indents in his wall but afaik didn't eat his plants in his pots - realistically they had a much better time in my garden! (Only got annoyed when they kept eating my coriander seedlings...and the wild life kept them at a reasonable level)
One day he put so many slug pellets down all around his wall - in my garden too - his gravel looked blue.
The thrush, toad and hedgehogs all disappeared Sad - the hedgehog rescue centre told me that they can poison them as they eat the snails/slugs that have eaten the pellets.
So please use sparingly and only if absolutely necessary

DioneTheDiabolist · 07/03/2015 21:26

OP, I think you should warn your cat owning neighbours and leave it at that. What do you hope to gain by sending your DH round to "odd" neighbour? What fo you want him to say?Confused

Tobyjugg · 07/03/2015 21:27

If he poisoned our pedigree Burman by doing this (& I don't care how many times the little blighter's shat on his turf), then he really would discover what is meant by "the neighbour from hell".

And why is he (& others) getting in such a sweat about cat shit. Birds and other animals shit as well - why not have a go at them too.

Isithappening · 07/03/2015 21:53

Birds and other animals are not somebody's pet and as they are wild you don't generally get the same ones shitting in your garden every single day.
Pets have owners and those owners should take responsibility for ensuring that their pets don't cause a nuisance to the neighbours.

Ahhh... annnnnd it's turned into a cat shit thread by 23 comments.. Hmm

UncommonSense · 07/03/2015 21:59

Quite right isit.

Toby is exactly the kind of selfish twat cat owner that I was referring to. Antisocial and couldn't give a fuck about what impact their 'property' is having in other peoples lives.

If their cat gets poisoned by eating any legally available pest control in someone else's property then frankly it's tough shit.
