Ok I need some advice in a slightly awkward situation. ... slightly odd elderly neighbour lives next door to me. His wife has been getting v v upset about cats using their lawn as a toilet....I get on well with my other neighbours . Odd neighbour told me had sprinkled slug pellets on lawn to poison the cats Shock

What do I do......

  1. approach odd neighbour but he's v unapproachable. .....
  2. tell nice neighbours to keep their cats in ?! But unrealistic and they are likely to go to odd neighbour and have a go ?? If they do odd neighbour will know I told them and I have to live next to him.....If I don't cats might be poisoned. .. Help !!!!!!!

err LST, it hasn't turned into anything. Cat shit was mentioned in the op.

DioneTheDiabolist · 07/03/2015 22:00

I agree Isit, pet owners have a responsibility to ensure that their pets are not a nuisance to their neighbors.

CatsBollocks · 07/03/2015 22:02

You will be RCVS registered as a Vet, I would assume your first thought was to the welfare of animals.

Naty1 · 07/03/2015 22:05

Because ive never stood in that. Have you? Stood in cat shit you cant see?
No i suspect not as they probably dont go in their own garden.
I agree they are antisocial and that they love gravel, which i knew that before i bought it.
Not to mention we had to give up growing veg as at the seedling stage they just keep scratting at it and who wants carrots like that?
Thing is once they start they just keep going in same place.
Big houses detached large gardens and flower borders may be fine but in terraced/semis where half have cats or dogs then where are they supposed to go. Should pg women and elderly be struggling to bend down pick it up (not like a dog as they havent chosen it nor the cost or get the benefit from it.
I dont know where they should be burying it but its a question for those with cats to consider, do you have somewhere a cat could dig to go?

MidniteScribbler · 07/03/2015 22:07

If he poisoned our pedigree Burman by doing this (& I don't care how many times the little blighter's shat on his turf), then he really would discover what is meant by "the neighbour from hell".

You already are the 'neighbour from hell' by expecting the rest of your neighbourhood to tolerate your pest. If your 'pedigree Burman' (it's actually Birman, which I would have thought you would know if you actually own one) is so precious to you, then keep it confined to your own property.

CatsBollocks · 07/03/2015 22:15

midnite it's hilarious you pick someone up on spelling judging by your username. The "U" and the "I" are next to each other on a keyboard which is an easy mistake to make while typing.

pepperfish · 07/03/2015 22:30

OP, I know they can be a bit hopeless at times but could you contact the RSPCA?

It sounds as if he could easily take it further if he was so inclined - rat poison hidden in cat food... Antifreeze in drinking bowls...

Gosh he sounds awful. Poor you, I thought my neighbour was bad!

Smarterthantheaveragebeaver · 07/03/2015 22:33

Lol at training an outdoor cat to only shit in its own garden. As if a cat has any concept of boundaries.

Feckeggblue · 07/03/2015 22:36

I don't doubt you know what you're talking about but if slug pellets poison cats why aren't there cats dying all over the place from them? They're very commonly used, after all.

He can do what he wants in his garden, I'd stay out of it

ouryve · 07/03/2015 22:43

Not enough of my neighbours have cats. I've given up growing strawberries because, even with netting down, if the slugs didn't get them, the blackbirds did - and then the wasps finished them off, which is what bothered me the most, as putting a hand on a hollow strawberry with a wasp in the middle is not ideal.

With more cats, at least the birds wouldn't be so cocky. They honestly don't give a shit until you're bearing down on them and making a lot of noise!

Glad you've warned your neighbours with cats, OP.

MaidOfStars · 07/03/2015 23:17

Hate cats. Really. Why do they exist?

Naty1 · 08/03/2015 00:39

Wondering if the poo should just be returned to the nearest cat owner. Yes it may not be theres but can they be sure? Maybe just leave/flick it to your paths/driveway so you can dodge it to get to your house or enjoy the aroma when sat outside enjoying your garden
I was walking down the road and a cat had pooped on top of (about 3 or 4 pieces) the soil that the homeowner has just dug planting small bedding plants - no effort to bury it at all.
Im dreading the work we have to do to garden as all the bare soil its going to be horrendous. Though im hoping the cat owner has moved.
I certainky dont remember it like this as a child.

NeedABumChange · 08/03/2015 01:13

You could buy odd neighbour the "get off my lawn" stuff to put in his garden. It'll repel the cats, keep them alive and odd neighbour happy too.

DioneTheDiabolist · 08/03/2015 02:10

It's not about training an outdoor cat to use a litter tray. It's about taking the time to train your cat to use the litter tray before you set it loose on your neighbors.

No one's pets should be a nuisance to their neighbors.

differentnameforthis · 08/03/2015 04:28

Tobyjugg

It's not only cat shit that is the problem.

Our neighbours have cats & they CONSTANTLY come into out garden & harass our chickens by stalking around the perimeter of their coop.

When they are not doing this, they are climbing all over my car, scratching the paint work & annoying my dog, who can hear the noise.

My dog wakes EVERYONE up in the house by barking at the cats.

I am fucking sick of it, and if I didn't care about animals I'd used slug pellets to get rid of the little fuckers.

The owners don't care!

OneEyedWilly · 08/03/2015 04:42

I'm very curious to know how you would train a cat to only poo in its own garden. I don't have one as my landlord doesn't allow pets, I'm just wondering.

googoodolly · 08/03/2015 05:14

I have indoor cats, so ours can't shit outside (good - I think if you have a pet it's your responsibility to look after it and to clear up after it) but even if cats are litter trained, there's absolutely no way you can guarantee they aren't shitting elsewhere too.

Jengnr · 08/03/2015 08:07

I doubt there's much anyone can do wrt slug pellets. Whether he's put them down for cats or slugs he's allowed to.

Tbh I didn't know slug pellets killed cats. I liberally sprinkle my garden with them as we have gazillions of slugs and snails eating my plants and it's certainly never trimmed the local population of feline bastards.

NaiceVillageOfTheDammed · 08/03/2015 08:42

I don't like the use of slug pellets. The slug is poisoned, then the poisoned slug is eaten and that animal dies from the poison in the slug.

Ironic really. You grow the fruit/veg/flowers to look nice/have a taste of the good life. Preen over the 'greeness' of your garden and not see the devastation to the local wildlife you cause.

Same with rat poison. Two neighbours dogs have been poisoned recently. Vet confirmed rat poison or at least the same type of chemical/poison used in commercial brands. Either both dogs accidentally ate the poison or ate a poisoned rat. Same effect. Happens to carrion birds and foxes.

I used to think the poison would be metabolised/broken down by the animal eating it and then that animal would be safe for other animals to eat. Apparently not with these groups of poisons.

nunkspugget · 08/03/2015 08:43

Whenever cat owners tell me that their poor darlings have been killed by cars, my first thought is usually 'I bet the neighbours are glad!'. Why is OK to own something that is above the law? Its like buying a pet thundercloud and shrugging when the neighbours complain about wet laundry.

TwinkleDust · 08/03/2015 09:03

Deliberately setting out to poison an animal is incredibly cruel. Do you know how horrible a death by slug poisoning is? It isn't the animal's fault if it has an irresponsible owner. If I knew someone who was doing this, I would flag it up to the non-emergency police line. It isn't normal behaviour.

Tanith · 08/03/2015 09:07

One of my cats died after eating a neighbour's slug pellets.
It was extremely unpleasant and I can't imagine that anyone who professes to love animals - including the cat-haters on here - would want any animal to suffer the way my cat did Sad

So please do warn the neighbours, Op. What they choose to do about it is their affair.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 08/03/2015 09:33

This is a really horrible thread - so many pp happy to see animals dead Sad

coleslawSandwuches · 08/03/2015 09:44

For those who hate cats, how do you know it's not foxes pooing in your gardens? Cats tend to be discreet and bury ime

Isithappening · 08/03/2015 09:54

I generally know that it is cats poo because I see the cats come into my garden and having a shit before I can find the door key and chase them away. I know the difference between a cat and a fox, so I can be fairly certain that the poo isn't from a fox.
