Ok I need some advice in a slightly awkward situation. ... slightly odd elderly neighbour lives next door to me. His wife has been getting v v upset about cats using their lawn as a toilet....I get on well with my other neighbours . Odd neighbour told me had sprinkled slug pellets on lawn to poison the cats Shock

What do I do......

  1. approach odd neighbour but he's v unapproachable. .....
  2. tell nice neighbours to keep their cats in ?! But unrealistic and they are likely to go to odd neighbour and have a go ?? If they do odd neighbour will know I told them and I have to live next to him.....If I don't cats might be poisoned. .. Help !!!!!!!

I am with the couple of other posters here who dislike slug pellets full stop. I am sure I have read that they are bad for wildlife generally and that birds who eat slugs that have been poisoned can then die themselves.

Mind you I hate the fecking slugs too and have seen plants disappear due to them. I have found that copper tape around pots seems to stop them. But then the magpies steal it. Actually I don't know which I hate most - slugs or magpies. Oh maybe I should just poison the slugs and then let the magpies get what's coming to them..

All of which does not address the OP's problem. I think tell the cat owning neighbour as maybe they haven't realised how much annoyance their cats are causing and when they do they might make the effort to contain them a bit better. But knowing cats that could be difficult.

I'm not a cat hater. I'm a cat owner. Cat owners should take responsibility and take the time to train their cats before they let them loose on the neighborhood. That means having them vaccinated, having them spayed and chipped, treating them for fleas and training them to go in their litter tray.

I am a cat hater. Purely because I have to clear up cat shit all the time and it limits and sometimes ruins my children's enjoyment of their own garden. I use disposable gloves (expensive and wasteful but only acceptable way for me). I have (animal friendly = safe) cat deterrents which also cost me money (and are of limited use). I think people whole own outdoor cats with no litter tray in built up areas are really antisocial and selfish. I wouldn't hurt an animal ever but I can understand the desperation people feel when someone impacts on other people's lives like this and often doesn't care about the consequences.

My children are permanently banned from my front garden. Cats shit on the actual lawn. I see them do it. I can't see how anyone can think that is fair. Fortunately we use the back garden which is very heavily cat proofed. But every time I need to set foot in my front garden I have to put Wellies on. And if I need to maintain it, I need to wear gloves. Completely vile. Hate and despise cats and it is no wonder people poison them. I expect the poisoners aren't thinking of someone's family and their pet, they are trying to solve a filthy, serious problem and have no idea how much people's pets mean to them. But getting such a pet is selfish.

Specifically op I suppose the poisoner sees nothing wrong with their actions as they did not try to conceal them from you.

FWIW I had no idea slug pellets harmed cats.
