To not go and see the film my mums chosen as her birthday gift?

It's my mums birthday and she has asked for us to have a meal out and go to the cinema as her birthday gift. So far so good. Except she has chosen to see The Second Marigold Hotel, which I really don't want to see. And I haven't even seen the first one (and nor do I want to!).

AIBU to suggest alternative or as it's her birthday her choice do I just go along and have a kip?

You have to ask? Of course YABU.

MorrisZapp · 06/03/2015 11:06

Oh just go. It'll be rubbish, but inoffensive rubbish. It's her birthday, she gets to choose.

Allstoppedup · 06/03/2015 11:06

I'd say her birthday, her choice.

I'd personally suck it up and watch it, there's no moral or logical reason for you not wanting to see it - for a second I thought it was going to be FSOG!Wink

Binkleflip · 06/03/2015 11:07

yabvu!

Lurleene · 06/03/2015 11:07

It's her birthday, so don't be mean. You never know, you might even enjoy it.

londonrach · 06/03/2015 11:07

Yabu. Her birthday choice...just go.....

stripysox · 06/03/2015 11:07

oh posy, don't be selfish, hon. how old are you? (genuine question)

Bowlersarm · 06/03/2015 11:08

YABU, don't be so mean, it's her birthday., a one off time she gets to chose.

And don't be sulky about it either!

mumeeee · 06/03/2015 11:08

YABU it's her birthday and her choice of film. It's only part of the evening as you are going for a meal as well.

ganeshamouse · 06/03/2015 11:08

Her birthday, her choice. It's not like she's demanding to see 50 Shades of Grey, is it? I can't see that it will be too great a hardship sitting through a film which at least has decent actors in it.

DecaffTastesWeird · 06/03/2015 11:09

Tbh I think YAB really U and I'd be quite hurt if I was your mum and I saw this post.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/03/2015 11:10

I agree with everyone else - it's her birthday, she gets to choose what she wants to see at the cinema.

posypocket · 06/03/2015 11:11

I'm actually older than I sound, my mum is in her 70's!

Yes, I think FSOG would be worse!

Right, thanks all - I suspected I was being unreasonable so glad I checked before suggesting another film. I'll go and go graciously!

ghostyslovesheep · 06/03/2015 11:12

well the first one was a lovely film

it's her birthday - YABU

firesidechat · 06/03/2015 11:12

The first Marigold Hotel film was perfectly harmless and gently funny and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think the second is similar. It might not be your cup of tea, but why wouldn't you do this for your mum?

My mid 20's daughter also loved the film, so please don't put it in the "only for old people" camp.

echt · 06/03/2015 11:12

Tell her to fuck off. Do something you want to do.

Or see that it's her birthday, watch film you might well enjoy.

posypocket · 06/03/2015 11:12

My mum does not Mumsnet, she definitely won't see this.

EverythingButTheKitchenSink · 06/03/2015 11:13

How many episodes of crap kids tv do you think your mum had to sit through with you? YABU.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/03/2015 11:16

Well done for taking it on the chin that YAB a bit U - I hope you have a lovely time with your mum, posypocket!

stripysox · 06/03/2015 11:16

the only mitigating thing here might be if you had a baby and hadn't been out for about 9 months...then i could understand it a bit (but still you'd have to suck it up!)

Bakeoffcake · 06/03/2015 11:20

Oh you'll probably quite enjoy it mind you I remember having to sit through films with my children which bored me to sleep. Harry Potter 1-7

Viviennemary · 06/03/2015 11:20

I'd just go. I saw the first one and it wasn't very good. The second one is meant to be worse. I spoke to somebody the other day who had liked the first but not the second. But it's your Mum's birthday and she might be hurt if you don't go.

posypocket · 06/03/2015 11:20

Thanks SDTG, we are arranging a day now and I'm sure we will have a lovely evening.

And if I have any doubts about her restaurant choice I'll keep them to myself!

fwiw I saw both films and really enjoyed them, innoffensive entertainment with some laughs. great actresses in it whats not to like. you may be surprised.

Fabulassie · 06/03/2015 12:17

When I opened this thread I was thinking, "Probably BU unless the film is Human Centipede."

As dull as Marigold Hotel will probably be, I see no reason why you shouldn't go along and sit in front of it/next to your mother.
