To not go and see the film my mums chosen as her birthday gift?

It's my mums birthday and she has asked for us to have a meal out and go to the cinema as her birthday gift. So far so good. Except she has chosen to see The Second Marigold Hotel, which I really don't want to see. And I haven't even seen the first one (and nor do I want to!).

AIBU to suggest alternative or as it's her birthday her choice do I just go along and have a kip?

My DDs (17 & 23!) went to see this film of their own accord last week! It'll be fine. And better than 50 shades of shite.

MaidOfStars · 06/03/2015 12:20

I liked the first and I know I will like the second because I can ogle Dev Patel again

InanimateCarbonRod · 06/03/2015 12:23

YABVU .... Confused It's her birthday fgs!

sherbetpips · 06/03/2015 12:24

to make it a little easier if you are planning on shopping in m&s this week they are giving out a bogof ticket for the film

Mrsjayy · 06/03/2015 12:26

JohnCusacksWife · 06/03/2015 12:26

The first film was lovely - gentle, funny, bittersweet. Go with your Mum and enjoy a night out with her!

Mrsjayy · 06/03/2015 12:27

My Dds loved it too

Fanfeckintastic · 06/03/2015 12:27

You're being selfish, I'd give anything to go see any old shite with my mam again.

TheFecklessFairy · 06/03/2015 12:28

so glad I checked before suggesting another film.

Your Mum has made a choice for her birthday and YOU are trying to suggest ANOTHER film? Entitled, or what?

Stratter5 · 06/03/2015 12:30

I've seen it, went last week with my 21yo DD. We loved it, it's warm and genuinely funny, and the wedding scenes are beautiful.

YABU, it's her choice for her birthday. It's not your decision.

Hoppinggreen · 06/03/2015 12:31

I thought you were going to say 50 Shades, in which case YANBU.
Last film I would go and see with my mum ( not that she would want to anyway)
Have a lovely evening OP

HereIAm20 · 06/03/2015 12:34

YABU. Think back to how many crap films she might not have wanted to watch when you were a child that you wanted to see! For example, as a mum of boys I have sat (slept) through Pokemon the Movie, Power Rangers movie etc. I do hope they would sit through something they didn't particularly want to see as my birthday treat at some point!

Stinkle · 06/03/2015 12:38

YABU

I had to sit through the Phantom of the Opera on my Mum's birthday Grin. She had to sit through all manner of shite when I was a kid, I thought of it as payback

CocktailQueen · 06/03/2015 12:40

Oh, YABU! The first film was great; really enjoyed it. Go :)

skinoncustard · 06/03/2015 12:47

Its not a bad film at all, I have seen a lot worse!!!
Its your mums birthday, dont be such a spoilsport.
Go, you might even enjoy it !!!!

Marshy · 06/03/2015 12:53

I remember, when my dd was a horse-obsessed 10 year old, taking her to see a film about a racehorse that was really a zebra. It was so tedious I thought I was going to explode with boredom by the end of it.

She's nearly 20 now and owes me big time Grin

Mrsjayy · 06/03/2015 16:22

Stripes that film was called my dd dragged me to the cinema to see it was a pile of guff. Zebra who wants to be a horse meh

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 06/03/2015 16:25

I sat through Shaun the Sheep for my dd .... Then made her sit through TSBEMH for me (she sat under her seat). Not the greatest story line ever, but loads of colour, singing, Bollywood style dancing ... Great antidote to a grey drizzly evening.

Marshy · 06/03/2015 16:28

I can still remember the grimness of it 10 years later mrsjayy. I must have been having a bad day.....

MojaveWanderer123 · 06/03/2015 16:28

I would just be glad it's not that grey shite. You could even have a nap, that's what my dad used to do Wink

DownAtFraggleRock · 06/03/2015 16:31

My mum took me to the Care Bear film when I was little. I owe her big time Grin

DontDrinkandFacebook · 06/03/2015 16:38

For goodness sake, you offer to take your mother out as a birthday treat, anything she likes, and then complain because you don't like what she chose? Hmm

FYI the first film was hugely enjoyable, funny and moving, brilliantly acted by a stellar cast. Unless you are one of those knuckle dragging twats who can't concentrate on anything that doesn't involve sex, violence, car chases or copious loud explosions you would probably have enjoyed it immensely.

I am sure the second one will be as good, or at least perfectly tolerable.

krustyem · 06/03/2015 16:39

I'll trade you. I've got to take mine to see my db and dn in the Pirates of pissing Penzance, in a very small theatre Grin

ZebraLovesKnitting · 06/03/2015 16:42

Next Mon DH is putting the kids to bed & I'm taking my mum to see that second Marigold Hotel film. For no reason other than we both loved the first one. I'm late 20s and mum's early 60s.

I'm sure there are people out there who didn't like either the first one and/or the second film, but I've not met any yet. Go with an open mind, I really didn't expect to like the first one (I tend to like sci-fi and thrillers!) but really did.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 06/03/2015 16:43

Same as Hopping - I thought you were going to say 50 Shades!! (In which case you would not be unreasonable)

HOWEVER:

Of course you are being extremely unreasonable!!! It is a perfectly nice, light-hearted film. How many films did your Mum take you to see when you were little when she'd probably have preferred to be doing something else?

I would love to see this film with my Mum.

You're a miserable moo
