to expect the large quantity of mince that has come in my sainsburys shop to have more than 2 days until best before date?!

Just had shop delivered from Sainsburys. DH ordered a load of meat, 2 big packets of mince and a whole chicken which have use by dates of 7th March. I know we can freeze them (and probably will if I can find some space) but AIBU to expect slightly more than 2 days before I have to use it? I am convinced that if I went into the store I could find a longer use by date on the same items

Somewhere in the back of my mind I thought the online supernarket shops were supposed to give you 3 days before a use by date on fresh stuff but can't find this info on the sainsburys website. Can anyone tell me if that's the case?

I am about to go back to work after maternity and we are going to have to start relying on online deliveries again.. This one has reminded me why I stopped using them! Grrrrr.

Sorry just to clarify the title, it isn't the best before date, it is a 'use by' date. Normally I wouldn't care but as it is meat...

Email them and complain.

They can (and probably will) refund you.

I agree, complain. I did online shopping with them once and only once because all of the meat was use by the delivery date. Ocado tell you when you order how many days to expect, i only ever use them now

Call sainsbury's - the telephone number will be at the top of your receipt. You will need to give your order number.

I call them fairly often for things like this, and they are always brilliant at refunding without question.

I challenge you to beat my 2 6 pint bottles of milk delivered on friday evening with the use by date til.... saturday {hmm]

I've had stuff delivered before from Sainsburys that went out same day/next day. It usually comes in a blue bag. The driver has always offered to refund. Once I had 6 Innocent pot meals delivered at 2pm that needed eating same day! I always ask for 'no substitutions', but they arrived in a blue carrier bag, and the Sainsburys delivery man said it was stupid that they sent them all. Indeed. I tend to get a delivery and pop to the shop every other week. And yes, if you dig further in the shelves you will always find longer shelf life stuff.

Sainsburys have form for this - when I called them to complain about same Thing they claimed 3 day promise included day of delivery.

Even when the dates were wrong, they were unapologetic and offered poxy on line coupon refund voucher (that of course you'll never use)

I've stopped using them, last delivery was an hour late, no del charge redund, squashed food & most due BB in a few days. Utter shysters

We drink a lot of milk here, but not even we'd drink that much in so short a timeframe!

It was waitrose, but they immediately double refunded me so I didn't mind too much!

For this reason I never include meat in online orders. I like to see what I'm getting and what the dates are before I buy.

YANBU. This is why I only use online ordering for tins and loo roll and wine and stuff and get fruit, veg and meat from an actual shop. But yes, I really think it should be a thing that any online shop shouldn't contain stuff that's going out of date within a few days. Nobody would pick stuff going out of date tomorrow in an actual shop. It should be the same for an online shop. Not everyone can afford Ocado.

We get this all the time with Sainsburys. We did a massive xmas shop and almost everything had a use by date of the day following delivery.

To give them their due, they gave us vouchers to the value of everything that to be eaten within 24 hours - im still not shopping online with them again though

Lol my sainsburys only sells rolls on the day it goes out of date. Complained loads of time to head office. They still selling rolls on that date only. Now going elsewhere as no point buying rolls there for lunches...

Sounds like some epic milk drinking is going on up and down the country!

While i have been off work and had the relative luxury of time I have been doing a lot more of my shopping at the butchers etc which has been lovely. I wish the supermarkets would put the same care into picking products that I would if I was doing it myself. It feels like the Internet shoppers get the stuff they haven't been abl .to flog off the shelves.

Thanks for the tips about ringing them, I will call them tomorrow. I begrudge having to spend my time doing that. In the meantime we will mainly be eating mince.. serves me right for letting the DH have my sainsburys password

Tescos tell you when they hand it over if something is near its best before and offer to take it back if you don't want it. I was very impressed the first time that happened as other online supermarkets I've used don't do that!

Tesco online every week, only once had short shelf life and it was flagged up by driver so I could refuse to accept if I wished. I've shipped online with sainsburys, asda and tesco and have found only tesco to send stuff I'd pick myself.

If you actually take any notice of the stupid dates it might be a problem! Either freeze it or use it a couple of days later, I guarantee that you will survive!

I have frozen it, but I expect at least some of it to be fresh enough to keep in the fridge until I want to eat it. As for the dates I know what you mean but when it comes to meat I am a bit more careful, especially as the mince is pork and it was a whole chicken, both of which will be used to feed my 10 month old baby, I am.not prepared to take any risks. Anyway, it is more the principle than the date, I would like my delivered food to be the freshest available and I bet you I could walk into a Sainsbury tomorrow and find exactly.the same food with a much longer shelf life.

I suppose this just speaks volumes for the value of using your local butcher, I just wish mine was open when I want to do my shopping!

I think meat products may be different.
I have an idea that online shops will only guarantee meat for 2 days after purchase because they can't control your storage facilities. I'm not sure if this will affect any complaint about sell by dates.

Tesco is great - you get a list of any short-date items and can refuse them if you want. I've never sent any meat back - they always pick what I'd pick myself.

I've shopped online with Sainsbury's for 6 years now - they always blue-bag my short life items and list them on the paperwork so I can reject if I want to, but as the nearest shop is an hour round trip away I usually have to work with whatever turns up

And don't get me started on the random substitutions....

When I did sainsburys online we unpacked everything as the driver brought it and sent back short dated stuff - you don't have to accept it.
