Is any there anything legally / morally wrong with this? I would save almost 50 just for a short walk..

Just don't leave your window down. Blush

motorwaymadness · 05/03/2015 18:47

i agree that moaning over whos parking on your street is petty.

but the people who live close to the airport, have to put up with this sort of parking week in week out and it just makes life difficult for them. why would you go out of your way to make life difficult for someone else when there is ample parking at the airport.

a one off is something completely different to what the OP suggested. yes SHE might only park there for a fortnight, but im willing to bet she wont be the first or the last to do it.
[sigh]

flora717 · 05/03/2015 18:54

I did this at Luton airport when I lived in St A. Nothing happened. At all.

flora717 · 05/03/2015 18:54

(And 2 miles isn't that far, 30 mins with a bag)

Viviennemary · 05/03/2015 19:00

I'd phone the police and report it abandoned. Which it is while the OP goes on holiday. Two weeks is completely unacceptable.

vdbfamily · 05/03/2015 19:07

we did this once when doing a cheap easyjet weekend to Italy. My husband dropped me and baby and bags at airport and parked a couple of miles away whilst I got in the queue. He parked on a street with expensive houses all with large driveways. When we returned he was gone ages to collect car and returned with filthy hands as one of the tyres was flat and he had changed it.The car had also been keyed and the wipers bent. We drove home on the M25 and when we got up next day another tyre was flat and the mechanic who tested and replaced it stated thet it was 'holier than the pope' !! If we had careered off the motorway, that could have been a manslaughter enquiry. I reported it to the police because of that and they said it happens all the time in the place we parked!!

Collaborate · 05/03/2015 19:08

I live next to a high school and close to an airport. Doesn't bother me where anyone parks so long as they don't block my drive entrance.

And to all those slagging off people like my parents and my in-laws (who leave their cars on my street when they fly locally), I suspect that there's a strong correlation between UKIP supporters and those who think they own their own private fiefdom on the road in front of their house.

ToBeeOrNot · 05/03/2015 19:08

Why wouldn't it be insured? Insurance asks where the car is normally kept overnight, it doesn't mean it has to be there every night, that would be fairly limiting!

TheChandler · 05/03/2015 19:15

I don't see it is a moral issue at all. Its a public street, and anyone might park there.

I'd be more worried about getting my car broken into or stolen, as I've heard that gangs target streets in locations like that and watch which cars are moved regularly.

countessmarkyabitch · 05/03/2015 19:17

There's an awful lot of shite on this thread.

You can't report it as abandoned, its not (well you can try, but the police will tell you to piss off)
It doesn't affect the insurance
It can't be towed.

If you are taxed, insured, the vehicle is legal and roadworthy, hasn't been reported lost or stolen, and is properly parked on a road with no parking instructions, YOU CAN PARK FOR A YEAR. Hell, you can park for a hundred years as long as you keep all your discs up to date.

countessmarkyabitch · 05/03/2015 19:18

restrictions rather than instructions, but technically still correct.

middleagedbread · 05/03/2015 19:21

I'm a bit precious about my car (Gloria) and always pay for secure parking if flying abroad. It works out at 3% of the total cost of the holiday and well worth it. I wouldn't be happy to leave Gloria on a strange street for long and would worry Grin.

However OP, the public highway is for anyone to park if regulations allow, so if you want to take the risk, why not?

ReverseTheTrend · 05/03/2015 19:22

I live near Gatwick

Happens fairly frequently, they are legally allowed to park there, and i knew when I bought the house it was near the airport

middleagedbread · 05/03/2015 19:22

I meant that on our next holiday it works out at 3% of total cost of holiday, it is sometimes less than that.

SnottyCowbag · 05/03/2015 19:23

Legally perfectly ok
Morally perfectly ok

I'd try and park it considerately but I wouldn't loose sleep over it. Try having a good look around on street view and see if there is a street where the residents have their own driveways.

Hissy · 05/03/2015 19:26

Pray tell, which airport parking ONLY costs £50 for 2 weeks?

A quick google tells us Newcastle Airport, you can get 2 weeks for less than 50stg.

TheFairyCaravan · 05/03/2015 19:30

I wouldn't do it.

But as a rule I don't deliberatley go out of my to inconvenience other people.

Morelikeguidelines · 05/03/2015 19:32

As long as you don't overhang someone's drive I think it is OK. Some one parked overhanging our drive for a week and it was a right pain. The council wouldn't do anything.

NerrSnerr · 05/03/2015 19:37

It is not abandoned if it is left for 2 weeks!!! If I wanted I could park my car outside anyone's house and leave it there forever as long as it was taxed, mot and insured and wasn't obstructing anything. The police would not take it away just because it was pissing you off.

CointreauVersial · 05/03/2015 19:39

Just be careful of your choice of street.

Too crowded, and you run the risk of irate locals being inconvenienced.
Too quiet, and you run the risk that a curtain-twitcher will notice your car specifically and report it as abandoned.
Too out-of-the-way, and you run the risk that it will be stolen/vandalised

I have bitter experience of the last one; the car broke down, so we parked it up for a few days then went back once we'd arranged recovery, but in the meantime someone had smashed a window and had a good rummage for things to pinch.

Ideally you want somewhere well-lit, busy and residential. It's a risk, but I'd do it for £50. You pay your road tax, you can park where you like.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 05/03/2015 19:53

I wouldn't - the worry about tyres being let down / slashed, windows smashed / paintwork keyed would be worth more than £50 in loss of holiday enjoyment.
