Is that extra 5 minutes in bed really worth it when you have to apply your make up on the train?

Woman opposite me on the train proceeded to empty half of Boots onto the table and put her make up on.

The funniest bit was the lipstick application- I've never seen someone make a perfect 'O' with their move to put on Lipton- could help thinking of those dodgy blow up dolls!

Who is actually so unphased by it they they can do it?

Being classy is so very important.

Nail polish is the worst, it stinks the whole carriage out. Do they not notice? Confused

GreyjoysAnatomy · 04/03/2015 21:07

I don't get the extra 5 mins in bed, but I do put my makeup on on the bus to work. I have 3 dcs that I have to get ready for school/childminder plus myself to get ready for work. I don't have time to do my makeup at home as I have enough to do already.

I see women every day doing their make up on the tube. I would not want to, the thought of touching the dirty doors and handles and then touching my face, ugh.

One of my staff used to put her make up on the tube each day. Then she realised that she was being watched and the chap was following her to work and watching her outside our office. She stopped doing her make up on the tube then, thought it brought too much attention to herself.

Chchchchanging · 04/03/2015 21:10

Me; it's planned for car but if traffic is busy it's on the train!!

maggiethemagpie · 04/03/2015 21:14

I do this. Its a rush to get ready in the morning, I have loads of time on the train. Don't see why it's a problem tbh.

Springisontheway · 04/03/2015 21:14

It doesn't bother me at all if someone wants to apply makeup in a public place. After all, it's not smelly or messy.

But, if you wonder why some people find it vulgar, I think the line of reasoning is this:

  1. A woman puts make up on so that people looking at her will find her more attractive.
  2. Therefore, she cares about the good opinion of people looking at her.
  3. If she rocks onto a train carriage without makeup and proceeds to apply it in front of everyone in the carriage one can extrapolate that she cares about the people she will be meeting late, but not so much as her fellow travellers at the moment!
Springisontheway · 04/03/2015 21:14

late =later

PenelopeChipShop · 04/03/2015 21:21

lol at the idea that it's done to get an extra 5 mins in bed! An extra five mins following my toddlers orders more like. I do it due to lack of time in the mornings. I love the morning commute, make up, then reading my kindle, it's me only 'me time'! Don't care if you disapprove!

Bakeoffcake · 04/03/2015 21:29

I once painted my nails on a trainShock

It was a very quick 1 minute job. The woman sat next me started to huff and puff with a face like this ---> Hmm
I smiled at her and told her the PRAWN COCKTAIL Skips she was chopping on, were rather smelly too.

love watching people put their make-up on on the train - love seeing the transformation and picking up tips. I'd always worry I've been doing something wrong for years

I know. I was on a train from Hyndland to Edinburgh one Saturday evening recently so lots of local stops. Loads of girls and young women getting on and doing their make up. I was in awe !

BreacaBoudica · 04/03/2015 21:50

Think the point is they don't care what random strangers think! When I get a train at 5.33am on a Monday morning, I certainly don't Grin

LilMissSunshine9 · 04/03/2015 23:42

don't mind it but just don't do it whilst standing in the aisle and proceed to drop your foundation sponge on me leaving foundation on my work clothes fgs and then to not even apologise Angry and if you are going to do your make-up carry make-up remover wipes so if you do something so stupid like that you can at least offer the person something to try to remove the make-up from their clothes.

Icimoi · 04/03/2015 23:53

I find it incredibly irritating sitting on a train next to or opposite someone who spends the whole journey faffing around with make up. Especially when they keep dropping it and putting their elbow in your face.

YoungBritishPissArtist · 05/03/2015 00:03

I do it on the tube most mornings.

The hygiene - I use hand sanitizer before I start touching my face.
I shake off any excess powder into a tissue in my bag so it won't land on my fellow passengers.

"Classy" is total bullshit.

I hate people painting their nails, that stinks but me putting makeup on doesn't affect anyone!

SusanIvanova · 05/03/2015 00:06

I did this today because I had to. YABU.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 05/03/2015 01:01

This takes me back to one night circa 1984/5ish when my school friend applied black eyeliner (Avon Kajalstick Grin ) to her top and bottom lids, with one hand, on a moving bus. And she did it perfectly Envy
I don't think I have ever been more jealous of anyone in my life, before or since! It still takes me about half an hour sitting perfectly still in front of a large mirror with all the lights on to get wonky eyeliner somewhere near how I want it Confused 30 years later!

MistressDeeCee · 05/03/2015 01:43

I top up my makeup on the train. I don't care who's looking. People find the most trivial things to be judgmental about. Seems as if a woman confident enough to put her "face" on in public view un-nerves them

SellMySoulForSomeSleep · 05/03/2015 02:09

I used to do it on the bus to school. I don't see the problem.
I very occasionally commute by train and will do it then. In fact I don't wear make up unless I'm on the train or the drive gets me to the work car park with time to spare.
I'd rather sit next to someone putting make up on than someone with loud music pumping out of their headphones or someone eating.

Meh. I do it. Don't get why some people object. All I'd otherwise do is browse on my phone, including MN.
I would not go to the loo to do it. Ewwww. The air is full of random people's germs and if I've touched a toilet door which people may have used without washing their hands, I ain't going near my face, hand sanitiser gel or not. I try not to use train toilets at all unless desperate.

Thumbwitch · 05/03/2015 02:56

I've done it - I don't see the problem, it's not like you're spraying deodorant or perfume around the place, is it?

Once I was going out with a group of friends and had to drive after work to one house where we were all meeting then get changed at lightning speed, then dash for the train. No time to put make up on until on the train. We all did it, including nail varnish (which is far more antisocial, and risky, wouldn't do that again) - and for fun did one of the blokes who thought it would be a laugh as well. Grin
