Is that extra 5 minutes in bed really worth it when you have to apply your make up on the train?

Woman opposite me on the train proceeded to empty half of Boots onto the table and put her make up on.

The funniest bit was the lipstick application- I've never seen someone make a perfect 'O' with their move to put on Lipton- could help thinking of those dodgy blow up dolls!

Who is actually so unphased by it they they can do it?

I used to commute by train and bus. I did my make up on the train. Yes it was worth the extra minutes in bed. I had 40 mins in train not doing anything may as well sleep in a bit later and do it in the train! But mKe up takes me longer than 5 mins.

VanitasVanitatum · 04/03/2015 20:40

That extra five minutes sleep means I often go to work without make up - totally worth it.

Now if I could put it on during the five minute walk from my house to work that would be impressive!

TheRealAmandaClarke · 04/03/2015 20:40

Yabu
Why would you give a toss about this?
Plenty of people drink coffee, eat bakfast and even shit during a commute.
What is so difficult to understand about putting on a bit of make up?

Yy avocado

StinkyTinky · 04/03/2015 20:41

because we can

GokTwo · 04/03/2015 20:41

It wouldn't bother me at all. I'd find it quite fascinating!

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 04/03/2015 20:42

Women, how silly of you to put your face on, on the train. Nobody needs to see such a vulgar display. Keep that strange habit to yourself, in a closed room, at home.

P.s. OP, I'm used to put my makeup on during the long train journey to see my partner. I wanted to look as fresh as possible when I stepped off the train, really couldn't care less what other people thought.

JegErEnStorNerd · 04/03/2015 20:42

I agree. I feel the embarrassment they should feel but are oblivious to. Hate that i absorb the wifi embarrassment of teflon public makeup appliers .

wiltingfast · 04/03/2015 20:43

Have to say I hate this too. Do your grooming at home woman fgs. I've no desire to be involved.

Loads of people do it though. So clearly op we are in a minority!

maggiso · 04/03/2015 20:43

Its quite common. There is not usually a loo on the train I get on, and its far to crowded to move even if there was one. Personally I don't bother with makeup, (we have mirrors in the ladies at work) but I have wondered at the skill needed to manage on a jiggling train, often without a seat!

omletta · 04/03/2015 20:43

I do mine in the car sometimes too - a 22 Mike commute takes me 90 minutes, it's a good use of time.

omletta · 04/03/2015 20:43

Mile! Not Mike

wiltingfast · 04/03/2015 20:44

The other thing I hate is people putting deodorant on! Yuk. Go deal with your pits in the loo at least...

Trapper · 04/03/2015 20:44

She got a seat and a tableShock

BippityBoppity · 04/03/2015 20:44

My normal commute to work is a walk, so I do my face before I leave. Once, going on holiday, we had to get a train at five thirty so I took my make up bag in my hand luggage.

At that time of the morning, the extra twenty five minutes in bed were definitely worth it.

Salmotrutta · 04/03/2015 20:45

Times have changed a lot.

It used to be considered a bit common to apply make up in public!

I don't care either way really but I do remember my Granmothers being very disapproving of women applying lipstick or powder in public Grin

Mind you, they also though make-up was a bit "fast"!

Mrsstarlord · 04/03/2015 20:45

Seems like good time management to me!

ThatsMyOnlyShirt · 04/03/2015 20:47

I do my makeup on the train because:

I've not had a full nights sleep for two years so the ten minutes is worth it.

My toddler LOVES the contents of my makeup bag with a passion. So I can't get it don't when she's around.

It feels like a good use of time that would otherwise be taken up with doing nothing.

I don't see the problem...

I did however at the women who appeared to be clipping her fingernail's behind me on the bus the other day.

kewtogetin · 04/03/2015 20:47

Christ, back in the day (when I was young and shameless) j used to put my face on AND plug my straighteners in and do my hair on my daily commute!

PilchardPrincess · 04/03/2015 20:48

You sound like my mum OP.

Anyway no they probably don't "give a shit" what a bunch of strangers think about them applying makeup. Not least because most said strangers don't think anything about it at all.

Camembertha · 04/03/2015 20:49

I think it's not very classy. Personal grooming is really a private thing.

Whatever next, cleaning your ears with cotton buds on the train?
Squeezing out spots and pores in your reflection in the window?
plucking eyebrows?
plucking bikini line?
Full Brazilian applied by a friend?

ThatsMyOnlyShirt · 04/03/2015 20:49

*ten minutes extra in bed.

KatoPotato · 04/03/2015 20:52

I have my own office and do my make up at my desk every morning while I wait for my PC to boot up and my tea to cool.

One morning my boss caught me early and thought I looked so poorly he sent me home! I just hadn't put my face on yet but was pregnant and happy to go!

Mrsstarlord · 04/03/2015 20:52

Thats one hell of a leap Camembertha!

owlborn · 04/03/2015 20:54

I kind of like watching women put their make up on on the tube. It's given me loads of ideas for my own face. It isn't hurting anyone, is it?
