To think the way DH makes porridge is just nasty

We've had a bit of a falling out over this.
He cooks it with white sugar already in so that when you come it eat it it's really sickly IMO!
I make it with a little pinch of salt and surely EVERYONE knows you're supposed to put brown sugar on porridge?
If DS asks for porridge in the morning the atmosphere can get a little... frosty.
AIBU or is he just plain wrong?

I have mine with neither sugar nor salt. Just some sliced banana.

I get rather wobbly mid morning if I have a sugary breakfast. Even if I use almond milk instead of unsweetened soya milk (I don't like actual milk and it the feeling's mutual).

Pangurban · 04/03/2015 12:41

I'd hate any additives to my porridge. Just made with whole milk for ds. He puts honey in it for taste.

On the other hand, you have a son who asks for porridge!!! I have to negotiate porridge days. I don't understand that as it could vie with rice pudding on whole milk. Best breakfast in the world imo, irrespective.

HedgehogsDontBite · 04/03/2015 12:43

Mine is cooked with chopped apple and cinnamon in it.

maplebaconchips · 04/03/2015 12:43

I do mine made with water, milk and some berries on top. No salt, no sugar. Presweetening it sounds gross.

Allalonenow · 04/03/2015 12:44

Ohh I wouldn't like that either, I have porridge plain with just milk.

JanineStHubbins · 04/03/2015 12:47

YANBU. You need a tiny bit of salt in porridge while cooking to bring out the oaty flavour.

JamNan · 04/03/2015 12:47

YANBU
Yep it's plain wrong!

Always best to add what you like after it's been cooked. We add chopped apples, bananas, blueberries, cinnamon or ground seeds to ours. No sugar or salt though. Occasionally I fancy a tiny spoonful of black treacle esp with bananas.

Showy · 04/03/2015 12:56

Oats and milk.

Or oats and milk/water if we're short on milk.

No sugar, no sweeteners, no salt.

Showy · 04/03/2015 12:56

Putting sugar in whilst making it takes away people's choices. You can add sugar later if you need/want it but you can't remove it if some wazzock has lobbed it in at an inappropriate moment.

FenellaFellorick · 04/03/2015 12:57

Which does your son prefer?

ArabellaStrange · 04/03/2015 12:59

I may be guilty of adding raisins to it before cooking it but there is absolutely no way that I would ever add sugar, bleurgh!

Pikkewyn · 04/03/2015 12:59

I make it with milk and then the DC can all decide for themselves what they want on it. DD1 likes frozen fruit in hers, DD2 only ever has raisins, DH has banana and brown sugar.

Thisishowyoudisappear · 04/03/2015 12:59

YANBU! Porridge needs a little salt. I don't put sugar on it - a little cream makes it completely amazing though.

FoxyVeganJane · 04/03/2015 13:01

Yanbu, add seasoning once it's cooked as everyone's tastes differ.

I like mine with peanut butter, jam and agave syrup.

Or banana, chocolate spread and agave.

Failing that just nut butter, apple sauce and agave syrup.

I like my porridge salty, sweet and filling.

susiedaisy · 04/03/2015 13:04

Oats and milk then a sprinkle of sugar either white or brown on the top to creat a crust. Or no sugar but some honey stirred in.

MagelanicClouds · 04/03/2015 13:06

I made the suggestion of him only putting sugar in after cooking. Aparently he thinks it's not as nice and he has to put more sugar on that way.
Mmm apple and cinnamon sounds nice.
Have to admit DS usually eats more of it when I make it.
He threw an actual strop a few months back when we'd run out of full fat milk and had to "make do" with skimmed. Probably didn't help when I reminded him that it's traditionally made with water. He pulled what can only be described as "cat bum face" and walked off.
DS likes raisins in it, but not always. He usually decides he doesn't want them just after you've put them in.

I think you should each just make your own porridge and save all the arguing Grin

It must feel like some weird version of goldilocks and the three bears in your house

susiedaisy · 04/03/2015 13:08

Oh no skimmed milk isn't acceptable it has to be full fat or at the very least semi. Smile

Mousefinkle · 04/03/2015 13:09

Yanbu! Has to be brown sugar if you're going to add sugar but ideally none. Agave is nice as a sweetener for porridge... And always a banana.

mindexplode · 04/03/2015 13:10

I make mine with a mixture of semi skimmed milk, water and either raisens or cranberries. DC don't know you can add sugar to porridge yet and I put honey in mine secretly once made.

Keptmanskeeper · 04/03/2015 13:11

Definitely no sugar while cooking. I agree that all additions should be made afterwards. We have flax seeds, goji berries and raisins. I also like maple syrup and cream. Personally, I agree with brown sugar over white too!
YANBU.

MajesticWhine · 04/03/2015 13:12

Your DH is definitely wrong. I make it plain with semi-skimmed milk, no salt or sugar added, then add brown sugar after. (I also sometimes add cream)

OhGood · 04/03/2015 13:14

YANBU! Salt.

Though it should not be cooked just warmed briefly in micro.

(I am in a minority of 1 in my household for liking it like that.)

IdStillRatherBeKnitting · 04/03/2015 13:19

I eat a lot of 'weirdo difficult' porridge. Add chopped dates before cooking, and they sort of melt in, and sweeten it up, a teaspoon full of scrumped apple jelly, a handful of mixed dried fruit, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, plus few chopped walnuts. Apple grated in last minute.

Keeps me going 'till mid afternoon if for breakfast, but lately been having it for tea, and I don't need anything else until the next day (trying to lose weight).

Needless to say I make proper food and plain porridge (brown sugar on top) for the rest of the family.

TinyTear · 04/03/2015 13:20

one measure oats, one measure milk, two measures water, pinch of salt.

then I have with with nothing because of GD, just extra milk and my husband and daughter add brown sugar and milk
