To think the way DH makes porridge is just nasty

We've had a bit of a falling out over this.
He cooks it with white sugar already in so that when you come it eat it it's really sickly IMO!
I make it with a little pinch of salt and surely EVERYONE knows you're supposed to put brown sugar on porridge?
If DS asks for porridge in the morning the atmosphere can get a little... frosty.
AIBU or is he just plain wrong?

Damn I really want some porridge now.

YANBU. The sugar (or syrup and raisins in our house) get added once it's cooked.

MegBusset · 04/03/2015 17:21

Blee to salt
Blee to white sugar
Double blee to water

Oats + soya milk. Add toppings after cooking. Acceptable toppings include brown sugar, golden or maple syrup, honey, cinnamon, any kind of fruit but especially banana or blueberries.

You are right. Brown sugar, after cooking. I make it just like TinyTear, which was how my dad taught me to do it (though he also used to tease me for not "eating them standing up"...)
I hardly add salt to any food, but find porridge made without a puckle of salt to be inedible.

Salmotrutta · 04/03/2015 17:32

Puddock frog is correct.

KeepsTrying · 04/03/2015 17:43

My dad [Scottish] makes his with whole milk and salt.
I make mine with water and then have fruit on or in it (at the moment, I am putting the porridge on top of frozen raspberries which defrosts them...lovely!).
Never heard of cooking it with sugar! I think a small sprinkle on top is ok though.
Yep, YANBU.

MagicMojito · 04/03/2015 17:58

Erm, have I been doing porridge wrong?
Oats in bowl, add milk, microwave, sugar?

Salt and milk?
Really????

Sallyingforth · 04/03/2015 18:02

No salt or sugar here. Just oats and semi-skim milk. Delicious, and the healthiest breakfast you can eat.

BTW Both the big name porridge oats brands, Quaker and Scotts, are owned by Pepsico, which is why the prices are rigged always the same.

Aldi's own brand oats are just as good, and far cheaper.
75p for 1kg instead of £2!

Cheerios this morning. Probably safer!
Thanks for all the replies, it's good to know I'm right.

Just milk, never salt. Any additions afterwards.

mardyelsie · 05/03/2015 07:19

Full fat milk, on the hob not in the microwave - that makes it taste funny. Serve with cream and brown sugar. I have it every day!!

Charley50 · 05/03/2015 07:26

I cook it with banana in and then sprinkle brown sugar on top. Gonna try it with salt now though.

Many years ago my exh decided to make me some "proper porridge" I'd never had it before, just ready brek type stuff. He served me up a huge bowl, which I covered liberally in golden syrup and dug in. My god it was vile, he'd put salt in which imho should be a hanging offence. It was years before I tried it again, made properly with half and half water and milk, a spoonful of honey, and a good handful of frozen berries, yum.
