To think the way DH makes porridge is just nasty

We've had a bit of a falling out over this.
He cooks it with white sugar already in so that when you come it eat it it's really sickly IMO!
I make it with a little pinch of salt and surely EVERYONE knows you're supposed to put brown sugar on porridge?
If DS asks for porridge in the morning the atmosphere can get a little... frosty.
AIBU or is he just plain wrong?

Yuck yuck yuck to sweet porridge! I just make mine with oats, water and salt and then add more salt and some milk when it's in the bowl.

DontDrinkandFacebook · 04/03/2015 13:25

YANBU. Not at all.

whothehellknows · 04/03/2015 14:30

Sometimes I'll throw some raisins in before cooking so they get nice and soft, but otherwise it's just porridge. With peanut butter & banana stirred in, it keeps me going for ages.

Branleuse · 04/03/2015 14:46

I make it with milk, salt and a bit of sugar during cooking, and then i add more sugar on top and extra milk

Noone else makes porridge properly except me. My nana did, but shes dead

fatlazymummy · 04/03/2015 15:00

He is being unreasonable, but so are you.
If you're cooking for more than one person you have to suit everyone's tastes, so just cook it plain and let everyone add what they want.
I would hate both sugar and salt in mine. I cook mine with mixed dried fruit, cinammon and half milk half water, but I'm the only one who eats it so I can cook it exactly how I like it.

Molotov · 04/03/2015 15:05

You'd not like the way my DF makes his porridge then: oats and water.

Water, ffs.

No that's nasty.

MrTumblesBavarianFanbase · 04/03/2015 15:09

Cook your own porridge how you want, and other people's plain.

My DSs both like porridge, DS1 eats it before school and sometimes as an after school snack. I make it plain with whole milk, the boys add jam or honey.

Rowgtfc72 · 04/03/2015 15:19

Make mine with water. Can't put sugar on it, would make my teeth itch as i don't have a sweet tooth.

MumToFourCats · 04/03/2015 15:22

I make mine with water and add a spoon of honey once it's in the bowl.
Yum.

I then pile into the chocolate cupboard

Morelikeguidelines · 04/03/2015 15:29

Mine makes it in a pan so it all sticks to the pan and doesn't wash it up. The resultant porridge is also a horrible sticky mess.

I make mine in microwave in the bowl and then add whatever I want after it is made. Makes more sense to me.

Ps I never wash the pan for dh but sadly our lovely au pair tends to do it if she finds it even though I have told her not to!

toffeeboffin · 04/03/2015 15:33

He is wrong. You are right.

Brown sugar on porridge makes my day!

scarletforya · 04/03/2015 15:35

He's wrong. Add nothing. Oats, water, that's it!

HubertCumberdale · 04/03/2015 15:39

I also make it with just water. Then either pinch of salt or honey, depending on what I'm craving that day.
I do love overnight oats with banana and peanut butter if I can ever be bothered.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 04/03/2015 15:50

MY FAVE IS MADE IN MICROWAVE WITH SEMI SKIMMED MILK ADD A HANDFUL OF RAISINS AND COOK FOR 5 MINS, THEN ADD A LOW FAT YOGHURT (MULLER LIGHTS OR MULLER CORNER IS MY FAVE) STIR IN A BIT, WARM A FURTHER MINOR TWO AND SERVE....YUMMY
OOPS sorry for shouting, its not so good that the whole world needed to know Smile

MagelanicClouds · 04/03/2015 15:50

My dh is rubbish at cleaning the pan when he's finished cooking. Why does cold poridge dry on hard like cement?

ThingummyJigg · 04/03/2015 15:55

Salt in porridge?

My God, that's worse than sugar of any colour.

You are all wrong. Have toast instead.

JanineStHubbins · 04/03/2015 15:56

No, salt at the start doesn't make it salty, it just brings out the flavour of the oats. Try it!

CremeEggThief · 04/03/2015 15:58

I don't like salt in porridge. Or water. Or butter. Or white sugar.

Entirely made on milk, with a tablespoon of golden syrup or honey or about 3 tea spoons of brown sugar. Yum!

GingerLDN · 04/03/2015 15:59

Oh I like my porridge in micro 1min sugar and stir then another min and add milk at the end

Higgle · 04/03/2015 16:06

Me - made with water with raspberries and soy milk on top, no sugar, no salt.

My mother - made with milk, cream and golden syrup on top.

It takes all sorts.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 04/03/2015 16:07

Always cook it woth water and a pinch of salt first, then whole milk to cool it and a drop of hazelnut syrup.

ThingummyJigg · 04/03/2015 16:37

I really hate salt unless it's on crap non-food, like crisps or chips (occasionally).

No way am I polluting my lovely porridge with it. I would sooner smother it in ketchup.

Salmotrutta · 04/03/2015 16:45
ShadowSpiral · 04/03/2015 17:06

You're both wrong. Him for adding sugar before cooking and you for adding salt before cooking.

You should cook it plain - just oats and milk - and then let individuals add salt, sugar (or anything else they like) afterwards to suit their taste.

Springisontheway · 04/03/2015 17:11

I side with you. Of course a pinch of salt! Brown sugar always tastes better than white to me, in just about anything.
White sugar is just wrong. And why get the kids used to things being so overly sweet?
