Just asking opinions, not sure what mine is really as was teetotal for years pre pregnancy so didn't need to think about it, but I was a smoker until I found out I was pregnant.
I just wonder if we are as a society far more tolerant of drinking vs smoking and this translates through to pregnancy as nhs advice seems to be to avoid both.

What do you mean by 'ok', OP?

To answer your question, no.

HTH.

ChipDip · 03/03/2015 19:58

I do think people who drink/smoke during pregnancy are bad. If you can stop at one glass you can stop at zero glasses.

PrettyFeet · 03/03/2015 19:59

what about all the babies that were born pre-demonisation? Things have become ridiculous.

PacificDogwood · 03/03/2015 20:02

I do think people who drink/smoke during pregnancy are bad.

They are "bad"? In what way: morally? Or gone off like rancid cream?

I think the very best thing for those who want to avoid all risks is to not become pregnant - pregnancy is very very risky.
As is life - it's a chronic condition, always ending in death.

Honestly, a rather goady thread IMO.

Hullygully · 03/03/2015 20:04

What about glue?

I always thought glue wasn't that bad. And aerosols.

Royalsighness · 03/03/2015 20:06

Going on NHS guidelines it's ok to consume 1 to 2 units a week of alcohol.

According to NHS guidelines it's NEVER ok to smoke during pregnancy, smoking is worse, wether or not anyone thinks that is fair, or "if people want to drink then why can't I smoke" is irrelevant, smoking has been proven to be worse

SuggestmeaUsername · 03/03/2015 20:06

you shouldnt drink or smoke

AuntieMaggie · 03/03/2015 20:06

itv have a programme about drinking in pregnancy on tonight

The synopsis for the programme includes this:

"research was carried out in the US in 2013 that revealed alcohol is more damaging to a foetus in the womb than heroin, cocaine, cannabis or smoking."

Hullygully · 03/03/2015 20:07

What about trans fats?

Royalsighness · 03/03/2015 20:09

I don't really pay much attention to what the US say, they arrest a woman for having a beer with dinner, not even for being drunk, just for having a sip, this can lead to a woman's newborn being taken into care.

Irrational and weird IMO

PacificDogwood · 03/03/2015 20:12

Nobody should drink or smoke.
Neither are good for you, dontcha know.

What about non-organic vegetables?
And man-made fibres?
Walking along busy roads - all those exhaust fumes

FayKorgasm · 03/03/2015 20:12

I don't think one cigarette a week is going to be more harmful than say walking to work everyday along a very congested route with exhaust fumes.

PacificDogwood · 03/03/2015 20:13

I'd like to see that research, what it was based on and who funded it.
Jack Daniels?

Hullygully · 03/03/2015 20:13

What about coprophilia?

Mintyy · 03/03/2015 20:14

What about rising blood pressure from reading stupid threads on Mumsnet?

Mintyy · 03/03/2015 20:15

What about looking at someone sideways with a slightly squinty eye?

Hullygully · 03/03/2015 20:15

What about anal fisting? I doubt that's ever done anyone much good.

Hullygully · 03/03/2015 20:16

What about morris dancing? Hmmmmm?

PacificDogwood · 03/03/2015 20:16

On reflection, I think all pregnant women should be locked up until they deliver - under ideal conditions of course. Clearly these daft wimmin cannot be trusted to the perfect vessels to allow man(sic)kind to continue.

FayKorgasm · 03/03/2015 20:17

Unless one was very constipated Hully.

Mintyy · 03/03/2015 20:18

Oh I loves you Hully I do Grin.

Hullygully · 03/03/2015 20:18

I don't think silly women should even be allowed to carry the children of men. They are stupid and dangerous and unworthy. Roll on artificial wombs in men backpacks.

DecaffTastesWeird · 03/03/2015 20:21

Moderate alcohol consumption has been shown to have numerous health benefits. I read that teetotallers are less healthy than those who drink in moderation. Show me a study which says smoking in moderation has similar health benefits and I totally get where you're coming from.

Generally, I can't stand people who judge smokers. It is partisan, snobbish BS.

PacificDogwood · 03/03/2015 20:21

Yes, Hully, you are right.
Because the Man-Backpack-Wombs would do a much better job of it.

HootyMcTooty · 03/03/2015 20:22

I gave up both during pregnancy the first time. The second time I gave up the fags and only had the odd small glass of red on a special occasion once I'd passed the first trimester.

I don't think regularly doing either is beneficial to anyone and it's not exactly hard to give up in pregnancy, I should know. I certainly wouldn't have been able to stick to just one fag a week, but the idea of smoking anything during pregnancy just horrified me tbh. I wouldn't smoke around my children post-birth, so why would I smoke when they're sharing my blood supply?
