To choose Philadelphia as my crumpet topping?!

Bobian123 · 03/03/2015 12:20

DH was feeling peckish last night so I said "we've got some crumpets - why don't you have a couple with some Philadelphia? I had that earlier." He was outraged about my choice of crumpet topping and said that crumpets are eaten with golden syrup or something similar. I've never had a crumpet with golden syrup.

AIBU? Is cream cheese on a crumpet really weird? What do you have on yours?!

PS. I just changed the subject line - the original read "AIBU to put cream cheese on my crumpet". Thought that sounded very very wrong and second reading...

Weirdos. It's butter and tomato sauce that make the best crumpets.

Heleng1982 · 03/03/2015 21:38

my sister got me eating crumpets with nutella I thought she was strange but all I can say is wow Smile

Cheese and bovril (and butter) is my favourite, followed by-
Eggs in any form
Bacon
Butter
Chocolate spread

Bobian you can indeed - it was demonstrated to be by a friend who did so in the toaster... On reflection I concluded that was something of a fire hazard so moved over to the grill. They go lovely and crispy!
I forgot to add, they should ideally then be re-buttered. They might a be both a fire hazard and a cardiac hazard. Blush But really, you need to try it.

They are also fine recipients for eggy cinnamonyness. With crispy bacon and maple syrup, natch.

YY to warburtons, and toasting to within an inch of their lives. Buttered with a generous grinding of back pepper.

SamanthaAndSamaris · 04/03/2015 08:56

Does anyone make their own crumpets?

My granny used to, and she would have been aghast at buying Warburtons Grin.

She used to cook them on the stove first , then we would toast them over the fire on toasting forks. We always had salted butter and honey on them. Why on earth we didn't have unsalted I have no idea.

I rather suspect life is too short to make your own crumpets (and I bet mine would be flat and without holes), but does anyone do it now?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/03/2015 09:09

I've tried many times, many recipes, but have never been terribly successful. They've been OK, but I've never achieved the height and fluffy interior of Warburtons. Probably because I've never forked out for proper crumpet rings. They do have a nice, yeasty flavour though.

ZingNinjaRoll · 04/03/2015 09:14

my kids love it. YADNBU

Lightly toast the crumpet. Butter. Spread with marmite (xo). Add a slice of mature cheddar. Grill. Top with Worcestershire Sauce.
There is no other way.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 04/03/2015 09:21

Well I have been thoroughly let down by the Coop. No Warburtons crumpets. They better have them in later.

DopeyDawg · 04/03/2015 09:29

Butter.
Butter and marmite.

But the 'eggy bread' / poached egg idea is GOOD Grin

CitronVert · 04/03/2015 09:50

If you want to see how not to make crumpets, I think they're doingthem on celebrity Bake Off tonight.

CharleyFarleyy · 04/03/2015 10:23

Totally un-related but ive always called them crumpets but since I moved to S Yorkshire I keep getting told they are called piklets Shock

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/03/2015 10:32

My granny (West Yorks) called them pikelets.

PatriciaHolm · 04/03/2015 10:33

Aren't pikelets really thin types of crumpets? Not the inch thick doorstep types!

skyra13 · 04/03/2015 10:33

Philly or butter are the only things that go on my crumpets need to go buy some now!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/03/2015 10:34

I've seen the thin ones on sale as pikelets, but it was the thick type that my DGM called pikelets.

PeachyParisian · 04/03/2015 11:35

Nutella is the only acceptable topping.
I'll have butter if I'm starving and there's no Nutella available though...

ZingNinjaRoll · 04/03/2015 12:32

best topping is Tesco Florida Orange Curd.
in fact you don't need crumpets. just a spoon

Grin
ZingNinjaRoll · 04/03/2015 12:32

*Tesco Finest

Vickisuli · 04/03/2015 14:42

I'd mostly go for a sweet crumpet, honey's the best as it runs down in the holes, (i'd go for syrup for the same reason) but I wouldn't turn my nose up at a savory one as well. Ok, ok, if it's food, I'll eat it (except Marmite which is not food but devilment)

Bobian123 · 04/03/2015 17:18

There are so many possibilities. I shall be branching out from my Philly obsession and trying some of these!

I am eating so many crumpets at the moment I may have to name my unborn DD crumpet.
