To choose Philadelphia as my crumpet topping?!

Bobian123 · 03/03/2015 12:20

DH was feeling peckish last night so I said "we've got some crumpets - why don't you have a couple with some Philadelphia? I had that earlier." He was outraged about my choice of crumpet topping and said that crumpets are eaten with golden syrup or something similar. I've never had a crumpet with golden syrup.

AIBU? Is cream cheese on a crumpet really weird? What do you have on yours?!

PS. I just changed the subject line - the original read "AIBU to put cream cheese on my crumpet". Thought that sounded very very wrong and second reading...

Never thought of Philadelphia as a crumpet topping before. Sounds yummy.

Def needs to be savoury. I have mine with butter and grated cheddar.

DextersMistress · 03/03/2015 17:15

DoJo that made me Grin
I was strictly a butter girl, occasionally a bit of jam until recently.

Nutella crumpets are delicious. There, I said it

pressone · 03/03/2015 17:17

Anything savoury that goes on toast including just butter. DP has butter and marmite (I hate marmite) or butter and salt.

If I want jam or marmalade then it has to ne toast, but never the crust - crust is strictly butter only.

Golden syrup is for baklng only

biffyboom · 03/03/2015 17:25

Philly is lovely, tame.
I will put almost anything on a crumpet. I have been known to put all manner of sandwich fillers on...coronation chicken, tuna mayo, egg mayo....I'm know at work for my 'concoctions' Grin

Philly
Butter
Jam
Popping candy chocolate spread
Lotus spread

All delicious on crumpets. The crumpet has to be nearly burnt though.

Haha! Just showed DH this thread and he said "maybe he wasn't golden syrup I was thinking of." Clearly trying to save face.

Just asked DH and he thinks golden syrup sounds perfect on a crumpet.
Urgh

DoingTheSwanThing · 03/03/2015 20:05

Yum. Just need the pesky offspring to sleep so I can raid the fridge Envy

They are particularly delicious toasted, buttered liberally then re-toasted.

fivepies · 03/03/2015 20:09

It HAS to be philly and martime (together) on a crumpet.
I like them still soft.....DH grills them until they are rock hard, yuck.

ilovemargaretatwood8931 · 03/03/2015 20:12

This inspiring thread is hot on the heels of the eggy bread debate, and like that one, has made me crave crumpets for tea so badly!

I want at least 6, some with marmite and butter, some with honey and butter. Maybe the marmite ones with a poached egg on top... I've also had great success with mashed avocado on top of marmite and butter. Amazing.

I'm also curious about golden syrup... Grin

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 03/03/2015 20:21

I use mine as a toast substitute, but definitely savoury. Lots of butter, cheese spread- but prefer dairylea to philly-, the seriously strong cheddar stuff mentioned upthread, beens and cheese, or spahetti hoops and scrambled egg is a good one too.

I have rocket shaped crumpets in my cupboard ready for breakfast!

ilovemargaretatwood8931 · 03/03/2015 20:27

Sorry, forgot to say- you are not being unreasonable with the philly, I want that myself now- and yet, am strangely more attracted to the idea of a syrup crumpet!

BTW, would you advocate the use of butter with cream cheese?
I struggle to see the point of a crumpet without butter, but think it wouldn't go well with the cc, so not sure what to think of that topping after all.

Bobian123 · 03/03/2015 20:30

doingtheswanthing you can toast crumpets after buttering them?!?

breakout rocket shaped crumpets? Pray tell, where from?

ajumpedup my DH feels less alone now....

When I was pregnant I would often have 3 crumpets every morning - 1 with marmite and cheese, 1 with peanut butter and the final one with either jam or honey.

Delish!

homeappliance · 03/03/2015 20:47

Crumpets and Nutella!

ParyMoppins · 03/03/2015 20:50

Hoppinggreen if you decide to LTB, I'll have him. Peanut butter and jam is my favourite crumpet topping. Jam first though..

What is wrong with you people?!

TheCrowFromBelow · 03/03/2015 20:51

Cream cheese and Franks hot sauce on my crumpets. Food of the gods.

Although I like Golden syrup on them too, with loads of butter. I only tried it out to replicate my mum's drop scones so maybe that's what your DH is thinking of?

weeblueberry · 03/03/2015 20:55

Wait why is phili a 'savoury' item?? I've always considered it sort of...erm...unifood where it can swing either way lol.

ChillySundays · 03/03/2015 21:01

You are both weird - only butter

MumToFourCats · 03/03/2015 21:03

phili is great on crumpets. Smile

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/03/2015 21:13

The only permissible sweet use of Phillyis in cheesecake.

SamanthaAndSamaris · 03/03/2015 21:16

Hmm, I have never tried cream cheese on them.

I usually have lashings of butter. And then peanut butter, or marmite, or a poached egg, or jam or honey or lemon curd.

Not sure about Philadelphia as I don't think it would go with butter (which IMO is compulsory).

But I am willing to give cream cheese a chance in the interests of research.

Seekingtheanswers · 03/03/2015 21:17

Crumpets are eaten with butter. I thought everyone knew that?!

WildwestWind · 03/03/2015 21:19

Gotta be Warburtons crumpets - definitely the best.
topped with peanut butter or cheese

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/03/2015 21:32

I do like butter on them but it drips everywhere, soft cheese gets round that problem.
