To choose Philadelphia as my crumpet topping?!

Bobian123 · 03/03/2015 12:20

DH was feeling peckish last night so I said "we've got some crumpets - why don't you have a couple with some Philadelphia? I had that earlier." He was outraged about my choice of crumpet topping and said that crumpets are eaten with golden syrup or something similar. I've never had a crumpet with golden syrup.

AIBU? Is cream cheese on a crumpet really weird? What do you have on yours?!

PS. I just changed the subject line - the original read "AIBU to put cream cheese on my crumpet". Thought that sounded very very wrong and second reading...

Philly - yes. I like hummus on mine too.

SpringBreaker · 03/03/2015 13:14

toast til done, then put garlic butter on, then a slice of cheese and put under the grill til the cheese bubbles,.. not healthy but very tasty

GlitzAndGigglesx · 03/03/2015 13:17

I love cheese spread on crumpets or butter or cheese. Strictly nothing sweet!

StayGoldPonyBoy · 03/03/2015 13:20

Never to be eaten sweet but I can only have butter. DH hates butter so he has cream cheese or marmite but I think he's gross.

InQuiteAPickle · 03/03/2015 13:24

YAB totally U! There is only one topping suitable for a crumpet and that is butter. Thickly spread so that it oozes through the holes.

crazypenguin · 03/03/2015 13:40

Philadelphia on crumpets is lovely. A nice thick slice of melted mozzarella is even better!!! Shock

Bobian123 · 03/03/2015 13:41

I do agree with oodles of butter as well. Earlier I had one with Philly and another with butter only. For variety and all that.

While we're on the subject of crumpets, I realise that I really like the word crumpet as well as crumpets themselves. Crumpet crumpet crumpet.

While we are on crumpets. The kingsmill ones are far too stodgy. Warburtons are the best.

emptyhouse12 · 03/03/2015 14:05

Crumpets and Dairylea!

CasperGutman · 03/03/2015 14:13

Butter and jam is the classic.

As an occasional retro treat I like a crumpet "pizza" like my mum used to make: crumpet with a smear of tomato purée (nothing posh or remotely Italian here, thanks) and sliced cheddar, grilled until the cheese is bubbling. Yum!

weeblueberry · 03/03/2015 14:15

Toast crumpet, insert one of the following into crumpet holes: m&ms, chocolate chips, peanut butter nibs (if you can get them) or pieces of white chocolate buttons. melt in microwave for 15 seconds. Serve.

SweetValentine · 03/03/2015 14:15

I was going to start a crumpet thread today because my DH bought 18 Kingsmill crumpets. They are completely inedible Angry

As for you lot.... JAM? MARMITE? EGGS?

It's enough to make me want to flounce i tell ya. It's butter or else!!!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/03/2015 14:16

McLelland's Seriously Strong Cheese Spread.

SweetValentine · 03/03/2015 14:16

Chocolate crumpets???!! Oh fgs!!

Mousefinkle · 03/03/2015 14:19

Sweet crumpets are weird. IMO they're designed to be savoury... I can't believe some people put nutella, jam, peanut butter or worse still, GOLDEN SYRUP Shock on them. It's butter (well, dairy free spread for me) or nuttin. Philadelphia or boursin does sound nice too... Grin. So yanbu, your DH is positively outrageous.

BikketBikketBikket · 03/03/2015 14:46

I'm assuming that you lot are talking about what are correctly called pikelets Grin Grin as they're the things with the holes (that should only be filled with lots and lots of melted butter drool, drool?)

Crumpets are smooth and can be topped with anything - but pikelets are an essential addition to a plate of melted butter.... Wink

DeliciousIrony · 03/03/2015 14:54

I love them with baked beans and grated cheese on top.

Eminybob · 03/03/2015 15:07

I really fancy jam on crumpets now. Sadly I have no crumpets or jam in the house.

InQuiteAPickle · 03/03/2015 15:09

Philadelphia, jam, marmite? CHOCOLATE?

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

DoJo · 03/03/2015 15:16

Has anyone tried sourdough crumpets? I'm too scared to buy them again in case the word 'crumpet' appears on my death certificate.

Bobian123 · 03/03/2015 16:24

Just to be clear...not one person yet has agreed with DH's choice of golden syrup? This is an excellent "in your face."

Cheddar cheese and marmite.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 03/03/2015 17:04

BikketBikketBikket Pikelets are thin and flat and crumpets, that we are all talkng about, are about an inch thick with holes.

Unless you are that strange family that grew up in Canada that I was friends with when I was a child who called everything by a different name to most other people.

Marylou2 · 03/03/2015 17:04

Peanut butter
Boursin
Philadelphia
Nutella
Damson Jam
I'm an equal opportunities crumpet muncherSmile

Scotchmincepie · 03/03/2015 17:07

Butter. Or a slice of strong cheddar and grilled.

Not sweet stuff - that's Wrong.

But I'd really like a muffin right now...
