I order with Tesco and usually the substitutions are pretty good such as a bigger version of what I wanted.

The only funny one was once I ordered a duvet cover, the sent a different duvet cover which was plain (fair enough), I said that I didn't want it thanks but the driver tried to convince me saying that it was worth double the price, that made me laugh a bit.

ghostspirit · 02/03/2015 17:19

rest my case seems asda is pretty crap :p

I use Sainsburys and have ticked the "no substitutes" box as I don't know how they work - eg if I order organic semi-skimmed milk and they don't have any, would they send me non-organic semi, or organic full-cream. I know you can refuse substitutes on the doorstep but have decided not to bother.

What would be useful (and I suggested this to Sainsburys) is that they email you the confirmation slip when they've done the shop for you (which they give to you on the doorstep), so that you know in advance what they're not bringing and so have a chance to get it yourself if you need it that day eg for dinner that evening.

I think it's a fabulous service even if they don't have things quite often.

MrsHathaway · 02/03/2015 17:57

Yes, I love the Morrisons text message in the morning that warns you what substitutions are coming.

Or rather, tells you there won't be any subs! I'd rather choose from a smaller range and know I'll get everything I chose.

bruffin · 02/03/2015 18:23

Ocado send you a nice message as well. It amazes me that i have a delivery every week and i dont yhink i have ever hadthe same van or driver in 2 or 3 years.

I do tend to do last minute orders so they tell you what is out of stock before you pay so you can do your own subsitutions

DilysDerwent · 02/03/2015 18:35

I had my Tesco delivery this afternoon and was disappointed yet again to get NO amusing substitutions of the kind I read about on MN. Every item exactly as I had ordered it. Where's my terracotta owl?
I once got 6 pots of custard instead of 4 for the same price. Which was nice.

nocoolnamesleft · 02/03/2015 18:56

The "best" Tesco substitution I had:

Ordered - tub of margarine.

Substituted - Daily Mail

WTAF?!?!!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Clearly, that was the last time I ever did online grocery shopping with Tesco.

MoustacheofRonSwanson · 02/03/2015 20:16

Had lots of odd substitutions with Sainsburys and Tesco. Just used to tick the box for no subsitutions.

Waitrose you can open a tab to write a note about what you you would like instead of they are out of stock, and that works well. It's just a text box so you can even give a list e.g. if no 2 x chicken breasts then a pack of 4 please, if no packs of 4 then give me a whole chicken thank you".

Also worth noting that if your originally selected item is out of stock you get the substitute at the price of the original if that works out cheaper for you. I've also had things that go out of date on that day or the next, like celeriac or smoked cod roe, for free, as they have guidelines on how long something has left before the sell by date kicks in.

MistyMeena · 02/03/2015 20:21

I've used ocado for years and I can't remember having more than 2 substitutes in all that time. I tried Sainsbury's once when it first started and it was a disaster so never again!

LongHardStare · 02/03/2015 20:30

Hilarious reading about all your comedy substitutions but I always have the option ticked off. At the end of the day, you are paying full price for something you haven't chosen and probably wouldn't have chosen.

It would be a different thing if you had a substantial discount for the inconvenience of the supermarket not delivering what you had ordered.

Even if they occasionally get the substitution right, it wouldn't be worth the bother of having to scour the receipt for the items and speedily unpack everything to be able to return the unwanted subs.

LongHardStare · 02/03/2015 20:31

(warning: further ranting)

If everyone had the subs button switched off, the shop would lose sales / profit whenever they didn't have the items in, so it would encourage them to stock what they advertise.

wonderingsoul · 02/03/2015 20:33

i ordered redbull and they sent me suger free redbull... they may as well have sent me cats piss

i was NOT impressed!

BadPoet · 02/03/2015 20:43

Just this weekend, I ordered a kitchen spatula described as a 'turner' on the Asda website. They delivered...a stainless steel travel mug Confused.

And then when I said thanks but no thanks to the delivery man he said - oh yes some of them are weird, we once had 'an Indian member of staff' send out a frying pan instead of a chip pan!

Cue darkly muttered 'well at least you could fecking fry potatoes in it' from me.

A side dose of casual racism with my bizarre substitution. Back to Sainsbury's next week I think.

Gwenci · 02/03/2015 20:47

Tesco are normally ok with me but I did have one delivery where I'd ordered Tommee Tippee nappy bin refill cassettes but they were on offer - 2 for £15 so I ordered 4 (ie £30 worth of nappy bin liners).

They didn't have the cassettes. Instead I got £30 worth of random Tommee Tippee products including 4 teething rings, 2 dummies and a rattle. DD is 17 months so can't say any of those were very useful. Certainly wouldn't have held many dirty nappies! Needless to say sent those back.

FickleByNurture · 02/03/2015 20:51

I ordered two bog standard cheapo bottles of French wine, got subbed two v nice bottles of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. No complaints here.

supermariossister · 02/03/2015 21:07

I've ordered for tomorrow and am wondering what's going to be substituted now. am I supposed to not accept it.

HotSquashedBun · 02/03/2015 21:16

When I've used Asda there us always about 5 subs, normally more expensive and normally on items that I've never seen out of stock in the shop.
Also had fruit that looks like it's been squashed or dropped, a burst tub of yoghurt and lots of things have really short dates.

Morrisons very rarely substitute and if they do you know in advance. Their customer service is great and much longer dates than Asda. Asda has a much bigger range but I use Morrisons because I know I'll actually get what I order!

bruffin · 02/03/2015 21:44

Morrisons is run by ocado

BoredFatCat · 02/03/2015 22:09

i once ordered baking soda from tesco and i got brought polish beatroot juice as a subsitute

julker · 08/03/2015 20:45

Best substitute ever has to be the person who ordered tampons and they delivered twix Grin not sure if they were going for something the same shape or they thought "well if she needs those she probably needs chocolate" lol saw it online a few years ago, with receipt for proof!

Sundaysmumisfullofwine · 08/03/2015 20:59

I like tesco subs, as it's usually an upgrade to the cheap shite brand I usually buy, and you can specify in your order any requests in relation to substitutions (eg when I order nappies I have a note on saying any other brand in same size if these not available)

I ordered some millionaire shortbread before Christmas. Got a massive box of chocolates in its place.

DragonMamma · 08/03/2015 21:00

I stopped shopping at Tesco because of the subs (and the cost). In 2 years I only had 1 shop with no subs and everything I wanted.

I got no white wine once 'no appropriate substitution available' apparently. In the whole store. Oh and lets not forget the condoms still in the security box.

At Christmas I ordered a few party platters for the following evening and a cheese board and they delivered NOTHING. They'd run out. I went bananas as it was Xmas eve. They did send me the stuff out the following morning and didn't charge me but I was furious, especially as I had popped in to the store a couple of hours prior and it was all there.

Koalafications · 08/03/2015 21:08

Asda once substituted me sanitary items with wafer thin ham

Grin Grin Grin

zukiecat · 08/03/2015 21:14

I've been using Asda for years for my shopping delivery and have rarely had any substitutions.

The ones I have had have been fine, and perfectly acceptable, think I've only sent a chicken pasta thing back.

hippoinamudhole · 08/03/2015 22:06

A very random substitution
