to think that there's no such thing as an original wedding since Pinterest etc?

Have finally got round to getting married. Want a low key, low budget affair. Never really been too bothered about weddings, so certainly no bridezilla tendencies. Have found a venue in the seaside town DP is from which is where the annual fete is held so thought, oh could have a bit of a seaside/fete theme going on, then looked on the internet and realised this has been done one million times before. As has the fish and chip van. And bunting. And anything I thought would be a goer. I'm not wanting a full on theme, but would like something with a bit of personality, but it seems like trying to do something 'quirky' or 'personalised' or 'vintage' is actually a bit naff. Have recent weddings you've attended used similar 'original' ideas? Most of our friends were married some time ago.

I have been to... um... 8 weddings, 9 including my own. Not one had a 'theme', other than lovely flowers and pretty table decorations.

Perhaps that's the way to go?

I can't really see how wanting something 'personalised' could be seen as naff. A good friend's wedding was as I described, but the table numbers were superheroes (I was on the WonderWoman table Grin ) and the groom had a Spiderman groom's cake bride had to veto the life-sized Dalek at the entrance to the reception nothing looked incongruous, it was actually very sweet and not in-your-face at all.

Haha, this is so true. Lots of weddings Ive been to have had similar stuff to each other. But if you like an idea and think it suits your occasion/guests/budget I think you should just do it anyway.

I think it is now 'original' to not do anything 'vintage'.
Everybody seems to go vintage.
I wouldn't do a theme but anything that means something to you and to your dp and to your families is good imo.

Unless all your guests are also planning their weddings and so also scouring Pinterest etc they'll have no idea your theme has already been done loads before.

I used to work at a wedding venue.

I did weddings for a whole summer.

They were all the same!

White sleeveless dress. Tick.
Champagne with a strawberry in to arriving guests. Tick.
Chicken dinner. Tick.
Sausage rolls at 10pm. Tick.
Airing around for food. Tick.
Multi tiered cake. Tick.
Band playing bland music. Tick.

They all blended together.

Except the one where the bride was in tears because 1/3 guests didn't turn up so it was a room of empty chairs.

No need for e wedding to be 'original'. If you choose things you like, it will automatically reflect your personality. If you have to try, it won't.

We just things we like. Eg we're bikers and as favours we had patches made...now years later we still see people at rallies wearing them and it's lovely. We got glass candle holders from M&S as centrepieces and again, see them in people's houses as we gave them away after the wedding. Just keep it true to yourself and your taste.

If you want a seaside theme, you could just have a few elements. You can incorporate things like shells and pieces of driftwood into table decorations, even into a bouquet. There are flowers that grow in coastal regions that can be used, and you can use shades of blue, turquoise, green, mauve and cream to echo the colours of the ocean (for table cloths, napkins, bridesmaid dresses, flowers.)

You could have fish and chips to eat and ice-cream, and a wedding cake shaped like a sandcastle if you wanted! Why not? Even if the ideas are the same as other peoples, your interpretation won't be identical. The important thing is that everyone enjoys themselves including you.

I completely agree with you! We have been to so many identikit 'quirky' weddings that the traditional one was the odd one out!

Thanks Soup. I don't think it makes me bridezillaish to want something that is a bit different. I don't like to dress the same as everyone else etc, so would like to avoid an identikit wedding if possible. But perhaps it's even more naff to try too hard to be 'original' or have a theme.
Thanks for the congrats El: we've not actually told anyone else and the proposal involved me saying, 'Shall we get married next year?' And he said, 'Yeah, I accept' and we carried on eating our tea. Romance.

i think dont worry whether its naff, or whether someone else has seen it on pinterest, or whether its original or not.
Just go for the things you like.

I have seen lots of cool wedding stuff on pinterest, so its obviously not amazingly original, but still, the vast majorty of weddings are not like that, and even if they were, it doesnt matter, as long as its what you like

It's a wedding, it can't be original and that's kind of the point. Just make sure your guests are comfortable and enjoy the day.

Weddings aren't works of art, they are parties with a very strong agenda. I can't remember any original weddings...

Your guests probably won't follow wedding themes on pinterest so they might well be oblivious to the amount of 'vintage' weddings going on. Go with what you like. We got married within the same two years as 9 other couples getting married. They were all completely different although I'm sure we all bought the same wedding mags and followed the same blogs.

When did it suddenly become about being 'original' any way? Surely it's up to the couple and their personal tastes and yes, shock horror there will be other couples in the world who have similar tastes and do the same things! It's virtually, if not entirely, impossible to be original with anything nowadays because just about everything has been done before.

It's a wedding. People aren't expecting an art exhibition and one would hope they aren't going along for the fish and chip van afterwards either Hmm. They're there because they love you and want to witness one of the biggest days of your life and share it with you! Stay away from damn pinterest and just do what makes you both happy.

I don't think I have ever been to a themed wedding! I must be pretty boring!

Basically, I just came on to say do what makes you happy. If someone else has done it before, so what! You have not. And even if your friends have attended such a wedding, they have not attended it with you and your dp as the bride and groom! And if you do not end up with an amazing theme no worries.

I wanted an Elvis Impersonator and for me to dress as Marilyn Monroe and sing 'I want to be loved by you' but DH not keen, so we didn't! Nearly 14 years later we are still happily married so none the worse for no Elvis Impersonator or Marilyn Monroe 'me'!!
