to ask you about wisdom teeth?

We are discussing these on another thread and I blithely stated that most people need medical intervention for them. Others have disputed my opinion how very dare they

So, how did your wisdom teeth get dealt with, if at all?

OP posts:
DinoSnores · 27/02/2015 14:11

Mine are still in my head and have never caused me any bother.

chemenger · 27/02/2015 14:13

Mine came through with no great drama and are still there after nearly 40 years.

kewtogetin · 27/02/2015 14:13

Mine are through, no big deal.

PumpkinPie2013 · 27/02/2015 14:13

I have all four wisdom teeth and they've never needed intervention Smile

I must be very wise Grin

They were, however, very painful when they were cutting the gum Sad I ate lots of soup!

spidey66 · 27/02/2015 14:15

My bottom two needed extraction, the top ones never showed themselves.

Elisheva · 27/02/2015 14:16

Mine were all removed when I was around 30.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 27/02/2015 14:16

I only have two but no bother from them. One took about 5 years to get all the way through the gum all the way across though

Snowflakepie · 27/02/2015 14:16

I have mine, as does DH. No bother. Granted we both had other teeth out for braces so perhaps a bit more space for them. None of mine or DHs siblings and their spouses had any problem, so that's 10 of us!

My DM had all 4 removed under general when I was small, so she was late 20s. Lots of infections and pain apparently. Not sure about 'most' people tbh.

IrenetheQuaint · 27/02/2015 14:16

My top two came through fine in my late 20s. Never seen any sign of the bottom two.

LurkingHusband · 27/02/2015 14:17

I was under the impression that as we generally eat a lot more processed food than our ancestors, our mouths don't grow so large to accommodate all the muscles needed.

This has led to more people suffering impacted wisdom teeth (raises hand Smile) than before.

Not sure if intervention is always required for impacted teeth. I was very lucky with my childhood dentist. He spotted my wisdom teeth about aged 15, and when I (rather embarrassingly) told him they hurt more if I drank [alcohol], he said he already knew they would be problematic, and he had already referred me for removal.

ASIDE:

Those who grumble about the NHS now, need to know that he made that referral when I was 17, and it didn't come through till I was 19. This was absolutely standard in the 1970s/1980s (I waited 3 years for an operation on my finger).

Mine are all still there, still not through properly. They are coming through bit by tiny fucking bit, painful for a day or so and then thats it til next time

NoraRobertsismyguiltypleasure · 27/02/2015 14:19

My wisdom teeth never had the chance to come through as they had to be removed to make room for an operation on my jaw! Having all four wisdom teeth removed at once is extremely painful for quite a while!

Trinpy · 27/02/2015 14:19

I have all 4 and no problems.

worldgonecrazy · 27/02/2015 14:21

Had all 4 of mine out under GA. It was very painful. I have a lot of teeth anyway - had 8 adult teeth removed in total, plus wisdom teeth. I think some people have extra teeth.

PlumpingUpPartridge · 27/02/2015 14:27

I don't actually have any, according to my dad. He's in his late sixties and has never seen any sign of his, so told me that we probably both lack them.

I feel like I'm missing out Sad

whatsagoodusername · 27/02/2015 14:28

I've still got all of mine. They were quite painful when they came through, but otherwise no problem.

I grew up in the US though and they are removed there routinely, even when there are no problems. When I was about 20, they showed up on X-rays and my dentist offered to dig them out for me. I declined and he said no problem, they'd do it next time - he was very matter-of-fact that they were coming out and other than delaying it until they were coming through, I didn't feel there was much choice but to get them removed. And that was a good five years before they came through.

farewellfigure · 27/02/2015 14:30

Ditto Pyjamaface. My left bottom wisdom tooth decided to do it's yearly mm growth last week and it was agony. It won't bother me for another year. A dentist once told me that on no account must I EVER get them removed or all my teeth would fall out of my head. Apparently they are acting as stop-gaps to stop everything shifting around. So no intervention here. Just yearly miserable teething.

julker · 27/02/2015 14:30

3 mostly through, 1 all the way through, none of them are functional though because they don't meet the top/bottom tooth

I had pain when they first started coming through but that's over 10 years ago and still not all the way through!

The one that has come through has broken and I'm now waiting to have it removed

InQuiteAPickle · 27/02/2015 14:31

Mine are still coming through, slowly but surely. I have three unless a top right one decides to make an appearance.

My two bottom ones are completely cut through but they move up from time to time. My top left one is almost completely cut but not quite.
They hurt sometimes but according to the dentist they are fine and I have enough room for them [big gob].

InQuiteAPickle · 27/02/2015 14:32

My sister had to have all of hers out though.

guinnessgirl · 27/02/2015 14:33

I have all four of mine I have a big mouth but they hurt like hell coming through when I was 21/22. I vividly remember waking up one morning sobbing with the pain Sad all fine now though!

StrawberryCheese · 27/02/2015 14:34

I don't have any wisdom teeth either plumping and I can only assume DH doesn't have any as he is 28 and there is no sign of them coming through.

InQuiteAPickle · 27/02/2015 14:34

I had an x-Ray years and years ago and I'm sure it showed 4. Sometimes the very back of my top left gum feels tender and I wonder if I will get a fourth one.
