to ask you about wisdom teeth?

We are discussing these on another thread and I blithely stated that most people need medical intervention for them. Others have disputed my opinion how very dare they

So, how did your wisdom teeth get dealt with, if at all?

I only have one that's partially erupted and has been like that for months. The dentist isn't worried but I'm thinking it's not going to come through fully and cause some issues tbh. The tooth next to it was extracted a couple of years ago after breaking so it has plenty of space to grow into but nope. Stubborn thing. On the other side the gum swells every now and again and if I don't scrub it properly every time I brush it absolutely STINKS and there's a foul tasting puss so I'm thinking that ones going to give me some shit as well. They both hurt every so often, no sign of top ones.

I'm in my mid twenties so I was pretty surprised when that one randomly poked through, I thought they only came through in your teens or very early twenties. I've only met one person that needed them extracting, everyone else has theirs with no issues.

Three removed.

Fucking awful that was.

I had to go under ga.. couldn't eat for over a week after. I had a numb tongue for ages and could barely open my mouth. I ended up with a dry socket and they couldn't pack it because my mouth would not open wide enough.

The pain was horrendous. Ended up getting two infections after as well. Pain killers wouldn't touch the pain.

Mine were impacted and in a horrible position so the removal wasn't straight forward.

I have one left that is impacted but they can't remove it as it is too close to my nerves and they think it could result in permanent tongue nerve damage. Thankfully it has stopped bothering me now but if it becomes a problem I will look at partial removal.

I had a horrible time with them for years before they were removed and then the weeks after they were removed.

leedy · 27/02/2015 14:39

Bottom two are still there and causing no problems, top two started to come through fine but were pushing my other teeth forward so were removed to make some space (though the other teeth never quite went back, I am still tempted by invisalign at the grand old age of 42). Top ones, I recall, were removed with a local and what the dentist referred to as the "soothing needle" ie intravenous valium. Frankly he could have been regrouting my entire mouth for all I noticed.

Also I had all mine at least partly through by the age of 15, the dentist was sufficiently amazed by this that he called the other dentist in the practice in to have a look. Clearly I am very wise...

InQuiteAPickle · 27/02/2015 14:40

Mine started to come through when I was 18 and I remember having a conversation with a girl I worked with at the time. She was the same age as me and I was complaining that they were hurting. She was surprised as she said hers had come through ages ago!

Number3cometome · 27/02/2015 14:42

Two on the left had to go, two on the right are fine, so I guess I am on both sides of the fence in this debate!

fortifiedwithtea · 27/02/2015 14:43

All four impacted. They were never going to come through. I had no end of abscesses until I had them removed in hospital under GA.

NobodyLivesHere · 27/02/2015 14:48

All mine were pulled out after giving me gip for years.

Naty1 · 27/02/2015 14:53

I have only 2 top ones (no room at bottom) 1 of which is a canine shape.
I dont think ive had any issues, but have had a lot of nose/ear issues since early twenties but assumed this was GF

itsveryyou · 27/02/2015 15:00

I had four removed in one go about a year ago. It was horrendous, not the extraction as such, but the recovery...Google 'Dry Socket' if you want to know more...seriously, I would go though natural childbirth again rather than have that pain and disgustingness.

I had them removed as they were so far back in my jaw that I couldn't get them properly clean, despite every best effort, and they were going bad. If yours are not causing any issues, are healthy and just sitting there then I would advise to leave them well alone...teeth do not like to be fettled with!

Darkforcesatwork · 27/02/2015 15:00

2 through, no problems.

meglet · 27/02/2015 15:02

3 of the impacted fuckers are still in my jaw.

One of them was taken out in hospital. no problems and no pain since.

Writerwannabe83 · 27/02/2015 15:03

My upper right one used to cause me endless problems, it was always getting infected so in the end I was referred to hospital to have it removed. It was still done under local anaesthetic and the removal wasn't problematic at all, the tooth came out within seconds.

pressone · 27/02/2015 15:08

Top left taken out, top right grown through straight and healthy. Bottom two: I can feel the shape of them under the gum with my tongue, both make periodic, if feeble, attempts to break through maybe they will manage it one day, but I am 49 so suspect not.

marymouse · 27/02/2015 15:11

Had them both removed by general anaesthetic, they were both partially through the gum and caused me a lot of pain. One was growing sideways and they had to chisel it out of my jaw. Worst pain of my life in the days after the op (worse than three labours) but so glad I had it done now

LostMyBaubles · 27/02/2015 15:16

Im currently cutting both bottom. 1 side is more painful than the other but It was growing under a tooth that had to come out and was Infected so I expect it will hurt

RachelWatts · 27/02/2015 16:24

I don't think I have any. No dentist has ever mentioned them, and I don't recall getting extra teeth as a young adult...

PastPerfect · 27/02/2015 16:47

All impacted. Had one out a year ago. Bone removal and two days in hospital. Most miserable experience ever.

ilovemargaretatwood8931 · 27/02/2015 17:12

I have none, and know they aren't back in my head/ face somewhere as I had some X rays of my jaw (unrelated to wisdom teeth)! Quite pleased!

My DH has 3 that are impacted at the back and cause problems, the dentist is very reluctant to remove them (location is awkward), but I think it'll have to happen one day as they're mostly hidden under soft tissue, but going bad... Not looking forward to this!

emwithme · 27/02/2015 17:13

All 4 taken out due to issues, at separate times over 5 years.

UR was in two pieces, UL was decayed, LR & LL were growing in at weird angles and also decayed (because they kept growing a bit and then shrinking back into the gum* and then growing a bit and then shrinking back).

*Dentist (I changed to her between UL and lower extractions) said this wasn't possible when I told her of the issues I'd had - until she x-rayed once, then said we'd wait and see, and when I saw her six months later they were clearly lower in the gum than they had been the previous time.

Fluffyears · 27/02/2015 17:47

Had upper back teeth removed which made space for upper wiadom teeth as I have a very small jaw. They came through with no problem as secondary school and never had any pain in fact I wondered why something hard was coming out of my gum (no pain at all). Saw them in mirror and realised what they were.

Bottom two fuckers are sideways and impacted. They smell bad and continually get infected and I have been on anti-biotics for pericoronitis 3 times. I'm two weeks they are getting evicted under sedation but it will be an operation as I need incision into gum and then they need to be drilled out of the bone then stitches. Just hope the sedation works as I'm crapping my scants.

stealthsquiggle · 27/02/2015 17:50

One of mine caused a gum infection as it came through - I was in the middle of my finals - dentist cleaned it out and told me to come back if it still hurt when I sobered up after the end of exams (it didn't). Other than that, no bother, and no intervention.

hiccupgirl · 27/02/2015 17:51

I just have the top 2 that came through pretty quietly and painlessly when I was 20/21. The bottom 2 never appeared. DH has none at all.

The only odd thing was that one of them was only partly through the gum until I started using an electric toothbrush and that caused the gum to pull back so it was fully through. Not yet (touch wood!) had a problem with them.

Figmentofmyimagination · 27/02/2015 18:14

I hate wisdom teeth. I had the bottom two out in my early 30s and the dentist incompetently exposed a nerve on both sides and caused irreversible nerve damage. My chin and bottom lip feel, well, slightly furry, 16 years later. I am so used to it now that it only really bothers me if I am worn out by something else - say a cold. It is bad bad bad though. I can't kiss my husband for example - well I can and I do, but it feels weird. It's a known risk apparently, although nobody told me! Worst experience of my life.

BuzzardBird · 27/02/2015 18:19

All 4 impacted and then removed under GA. Was given Amoxcylin to prevent infection in the stitches. Discovered this was a really bad time to discover I was extremely allergic to Amoxcylin when throwing up violently with a mouthful of stitches.

museumum · 27/02/2015 18:32

Top two in and really squint and have crowded my canines.

One bottom one impacted and not causing any issues, the other was only half impacted and had to be extracted.
