Free from food! Argh...

Why is it so damn expensive?! It's not my fault I have allergies, why do I have to pay £2.50 for a teeny loaf of bread?

I think free from food should be similar in price to normal food. It's unfair to make people who have a medical condition pay more for everything surely? Angry

Who's with me? Aibu? To me it's just as bad as the fact we have to pay tax on fecking tampons Hmm

I often find free from stuff reduced at the end of the day so stock up the freezer. Most gluten free bread is only good for toast imo so doesn't matter if it's frozen

You live in a capitalist society. Things are sold to make a profit. If GF bread was sold at the same price as regular bread the company making it would go out of business in a month, with huge losses.

It's annoying, sure, but its life. One of my dc needs everything strictly dairy free, its a total bitch. And we had to do a year on gluten free too, so I get that too. But its not anyones fault and its not ridiculous, and YABU.

Make your own loaves and freeze some in slices, then you always have some readily available when you are in rush or can't be bothered. And if you buy flours/ingredients in bulk you can save a lot of money.

Countess that's a fab idea, thankyou Smile my freezer wouldn't hold a full loaf but I could just cut off a couple slices to freeze.

I do know it's nobody's fault etc, it is just irritating and I'm quite happy to BU, I just felt like a moan Grin

Ah, I know, I've had the same moan myself. But easier to find answers than complain -fuck that sounds sancimonious-- Grin

Put 2 slices in a freezer bag, you could probably fit a few bags in. And you can toast from frozen.

I was been trying to find a easter egg for a friend who wanted Gluten Free easter egg, someone recommend this organic chocolate Easter egg which is suitable for vegetarians, vegans, folk with dairy, soya & gluten allergies and chocolate lovers, I was amazed it's only £5.99, www.chocolatlovers.co.uk/organic-chocolate-solid-84g-easter-egg

Yabu really. I understand its frustrating though. Simple facts are that creating free from foods is still specialised, has much more regulations and is more expensive to produce. I create products for the fitness industry and have done vegan and gluten free products, so I know its the case. They are usually made in smaller batches and again it increases cost per unit. It all adds up.

I don't see why it should be subsided and by who?

As for prescription you need to be ceoliac to get a prescription. I am not, although I can't eat pasta, rice, bread...no one can figure out what it is. So I don't get prescription.

Most of the GF flours you can make yourself from the cheap base ingredients - rice flour, oat flour, etc. so you don't need to waste money on expensive ready-made.
