To ask, Do you eat in bed?

whothehellknows · 25/02/2015 21:45

... and if so, what do you eat?

For the past several months, I've noticed that as soon as my head hits the pillow I'm suddenly starving. Even if I've eaten a proper dinner, I sometimes wake up ravenous in the night. Then if I don't get up and seek out food, I'll just lie awake for ages. What is up with this?

I've mentioned it to colleagues and a couple have confessed to keeping chocolate bars or crisps by the bed for midnight munchies or coming downstairs for cereal in the wee hours of the morning. Is this something that happens to lots of people?

Cross kababy posts!

AmysTiara · 25/02/2015 21:54

No never, it's something that's honestly never occurred to me to do. Plus crumbs ugh

BlinkAndMiss · 25/02/2015 21:55

When I was younger and lived with my parents then yes, I used to work very late shifts so would come home, make my tea and eat it in bed. Since I've moved out, lived alone and now with DH I very rarely do, I'm sure I've had the odd breakfast in bed can't think of an exact time this actually happened and I've brought cups of tea back to bed when DH has got up with DS but I feel guilty and slovenly eating in bed. I don't judge other people for it though, and the thought of it is actually quite appealing but when it comes down to it it just feels wrong.

Vvvoom · 25/02/2015 21:56

I do. Toast and tea after supper, bowl of cereal just before I clean teeth and go to bed. I wake up starving if I don't have a bedtime snack.

Sometimes eat toast in bed. Dh hates it!

Mintyy · 25/02/2015 21:56

No, it wouldn't cross my mind to do this. I suffer from horrendous insomnia too and am sometimes awake in the night long enough to get hungry, but it never occurs to me to actually eat in bed. If I were that desperate I'd get up and eat something in the kitchen.

sh0wp0ny · 25/02/2015 21:57

No not normally.

Only when feeling ill.

Don't tend to hang out in bed though, only go there to sleep.

ICanHearYouShoutingVile · 25/02/2015 21:58

No never eat in bed! DH used to (toast) before DC came along.
Think of the crumbs!
Have you had your thyroid checked? If you've eaten you shouldn't be hungry - do you drink? Perhaps a wine would help. (Not Helpful At All).

Cliffdiver · 25/02/2015 21:58

I used to eat dry crackers in bed when I was PG to ward off morning sickness, but I would lean over the side so the crumbs went on the floor.

When DH and I (very rarely) watch a film in bed we'll usually have wine and maybe a snack - crisps/garlic bread.

We've also had takeaways in bed Blush.

Occasionally had breakfast in bed, before DCs.

usualsuspect333 · 25/02/2015 21:59

I love hanging out in bed in the winter.

I have a TV in my bedroom too just to complete my slovenly piggy habits.

bedunkalilt · 25/02/2015 22:00

I don't eat in bed because I don't like the crumbs or leaving plates in the room overnight, for example. We used to eat all our meals in bed when we were just married, as our bed was also the sofa, was also the desk, was also the dining table... Smile

I've never been peckish at night but I've read it a number of times on Myfitnesspal, people who wake up in the early hours with cravings. I do get thirsty though and keep a bottle of water by the bed.

Gatehouse77 · 25/02/2015 22:01

No, rule from my own childhood is no food allowed upstairs!

SocialMediaAddict · 25/02/2015 22:03

No.

passthewineplz · 25/02/2015 22:04

As a teen, I used to eat on top of the bed to get away from my parents. I also used to eat takeaways in my ex's bedroom when I first started going out with him, as he lived with his parents at the time.... We also ate snacks in bed....

I also used to regularly have breakfast in bed when I lived with the ex, but don't really eat in the bedroom now unless it's the odd bowl of cereal.

I don't like crumbs in the bed, plus I try to keep the bedroom as a place to sleep.

If you're waking up hungry, you might actually be a bit dehydrated. Do you drink much fluids?

nocabbageinmyeye · 25/02/2015 22:05

I had a Mars bar & tea in bed last night and last week I had a 6 pack of fudge and tea, only non crumby stuff though, no crumb wastage here when it comes to chocolate

SlinkyB · 25/02/2015 22:05

I love eating in bed. Just snacks/cereal/toast. Am almost always hungry just before I go to sleep, grr.

pilates · 25/02/2015 22:06

No, I have never woken up hungry from sleeping at night.

Remind · 25/02/2015 22:06

No. Don't you have to get up anyway, to brush your teeth? I can't sleep unless I've brushed my teeth.

usualsuspect333 · 25/02/2015 22:07

Good plan.nocabbage. I wouldn't eat a flake in bed.

whothehellknows · 25/02/2015 22:10

I wouldn't normally be inclined to eat in the bedroom because I like it to smell like flowers and clean linen-- food smells & crumbs aren't cool. I always have loads of water and I try to eat decent food during the day.

The only major thing that's changed is that I'm on the combined pill-- would that make any difference?

No I never eat in bed. The idea is horrible to me.

But I have a friend who is a night eater. It is a thing. I've read somewhere about some sort of hormonal cause but I can't remember anything more.

TheFairyCaravan · 25/02/2015 22:12

All the time.

I eat my breakfast in bed most mornings. In the evenings I often have tea and biscuits in bed. Depending on how well I am I sometimes have lunch and/or dinner in bed.

We don't get crumbs in the bed, I use a plate or bowl. We have a little hand held vac to hoover out the bed if there are any crumbs.

I clean my teeth when I get up to put the pots in the dishwasher and have a wee.

TheHoundsBitch · 25/02/2015 22:13

No, I used to hate it when DH tried to bring me breakfast in bed. It took him a while to believe me when I said I didn't enjoy it Hmm

Elledouble · 25/02/2015 22:14

Nooo. I don't even like eating in my pyjamas, it makes me feel a bit grubby somehow.

BackforGood · 25/02/2015 22:15

No
Well only ever if I've been ill and unable to get out of bed and them am tempted by a piece of toast or something when starting to feel better but not ready to get out of bed.

Chillyegg · 25/02/2015 22:18

I love a good brew in bed! Can't have full meals in bed but since being pregnant especially, past couple of weeks, I'll wake up in the night and have a banana or flapjack that I've out next to my bed so I don't feel sick.
