AIBU to wonder who in their right mind buys Wensleydale cheese on purpose?

I accidentally bought some tonight, it must have been lurking in amongst the cheddar and I didn't notice my mistake until I got home.

Well. It looks and tastes every inch a big mistake. Does anyone ever buy it on purpose? If so, why? What am I going to do with the rest of it? I never met a cheese I didn't like, but this is just unspeakable Confused

YABU
It's great with lime pickle or apricot jam, and on toasted hot cross buns.

I'm going to get some of the salted caramel one ASAP!

LuisSuarezTeeth · 24/02/2015 23:52

Lime pickle?!

ZeddyByeBye · 25/02/2015 00:24

I love the stuff, but you have to get the right version.

Philoslothy · 25/02/2015 00:46

We love it with a bit of tea loaf and a nice cup of tea.

UterusUterusGhali · 25/02/2015 00:49

Omg it's amazing though!

Cheshire similar, but has the edge I think.

A million times better than cheddar!

WoodenGo · 25/02/2015 00:53

Mmm, that Hawes creamery is heaven for cheese pigs like me. They also sell online and have great hampers...

Patsyandeddie · 25/02/2015 01:19

Best cheese with pretty much anything!

ScrambledEggAndToast · 25/02/2015 06:28

Wensleydale with apricots is lush Grin

thatsucks · 25/02/2015 06:35

Your OP made me laugh so much!

Thank you I needed that after a bloody awful night's sleep Thanks

Oh and YANBU, it's a monstrosity and an embarrassment to the cheese world.

Lurknomoreladies · 25/02/2015 07:31

OP, yabvvu! And those pps who like Wensleydale with 'stuff' in it are also BU.

For the Lord said 'Let there be Wensleydale and let it be free from fruit and salted caramel bollocks' And so it was.

You know, in that bit of the Bible that was about Wensleydale... Grin Grin

Mousefinkle · 25/02/2015 07:32

Shock you're weird! It's one of the nicest cheeses in the world. Perfect with fruit cake and the one with cranberries in is just out of this world. You need new tastebuds Grin.

thatsucks · 25/02/2015 07:32

Wensleydale is the new Marmite!

TheRealAmandaClarke · 25/02/2015 08:02

Yummy wensleydale
Espesh with apple/ apple chutney/ aubergine chutney.
Delish.

thegreylady · 25/02/2015 09:04

Wensleydale is my favourite cheese ever. I have a lovely pork recipe which has a topping of crumbled Wensleydale. I'll share if you are interested. I first had it in a hotel in Thirsk in the 70s and persuaded the chef to give me the recipe.

muminhants · 25/02/2015 09:16

Me! I like cheeses like this - Cheshire, Lancashire, Wensleydale and Caerphilly. Yummy.

FenellaFellorick · 25/02/2015 09:26

it's too gritty on its own but with fruit it's amazing.

Lurknomoreladies · 25/02/2015 10:58

OMG greylady, that sounds gorgeous. Please share!

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 25/02/2015 11:02

It didn't taste nice to me either (I'm from about 5 miles from where I'm assuming the OP is, based on her username), but my yorkshire ex-inlaws loved it. Maybe it's a regionally cultural thing

they ate it ON a slice of christmas cake too - frankly the thought of cheese on fruitcake made me feel a bit queasy

Sunnymeg · 25/02/2015 11:05

Wensleydale needs to be good quality.

Lancashire cheese is amazing with apple pie!

ConferencePear · 25/02/2015 11:09

OP you cannot be serious.
Wensleydale is luscious with cake, especially Christmas cake or a good tart blackcurrant jam.
It makes me sad that people rave over Outer Mongolian Goat's cheese with chopped mangoes and yet don't appreciate our own cheese. Some of our good local cheeses have almost disappeared; bring on the Caerphilly, Lancashire and if you can find it Derby Sage.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 25/02/2015 11:38

Ooh, I'd forgotten about Sage Derby cheese Conference

We have a misty veg Morrisons that has a bigger than usual cheese counter, and I think they might have it - must go look.

Shock at the amount of people who've never had cheese and christmas cake together. They are so missing out.

ghostyslovesheep · 25/02/2015 11:41

YABU I love Wensleydale

however cheese with fruit in it is just wrong wrong wrong - cheese WITH fruit next to it - fine - but apricots IN cheese - are you crazy

Having tried the samples at the Hawes factory just last week I shall share with you my findings; the ones with fruit in are not pleasant, the one with chocolate orange in is an abomination. However garlic & onion works well, the smoked one is good and the Kit Calvert special is not so crumbly and tastes scrummy.

QueenFuri · 25/02/2015 12:01

Mmm I'm going shopping wensleydale and teacakes are now on top of the list..
