Sitting here thinking about mine when I should be working and thought I would throw it out to the MN masses. Grin

After much deliberation, it is a tie for me between:

'Jonnys in the Basement mixing up the medicine, I'm on the pavement thinking 'bout the government' - Dylan

And

'Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty'

Anything that pulls you up? Makes you laugh? Breaks your heart? Has great memories?

And I admit that I ain't no angel
I admit that I ain't no saint
I'm selfish and I'm cruel but you're blind
If I exorcise my devils
Well my angels may leave too
When they leave they're so hard to find

Tom Waits - Please Call Me Baby (wonderful arrangement too)

Ujjayi · 24/02/2015 20:48

JoshuaJosephsPork - that is one of Billy's finest. I also love The Few. It's reference to

"These Little John Bullshits" seems so apt in these days where I despair at the rise of UKIP support.

ecofreckle · 24/02/2015 20:50

Filthypout yes, beautiful song, agree wholeheartedly. And have you seen the video. Martha! Too-wit-too-woo. My dh just doesn't get it.

Stiritupuna oh yes, Ryan Adams lyrics from that album, bloody delicious. I'm off to listen and look at old photos of him on line Smile

WONAR · 24/02/2015 20:56

This always makes me feel better when I'm down - from Jimmy Eat World's 'The Middle':

Hey, don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on.
Just try your best, try everything you can.
And don't you worry what they tell themselves when you're away....

Live right now.
Yeah, just be yourself.
It doesn't matter if it's good enough for someone else.

WitchOfEndor · 24/02/2015 20:59

Yes to Annie's Song, also I get shivers whenever I hear this song -Caledonia.

I don't know if you can see the changes that have come over me
In these last few days I've been afraid that I might drift away
So I've been telling old stories, singing songs, that make me think about where I come from
That's the reason why I seem so far away today

Let me tell you that I love you and I think about you all the time
Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home
But if I should become a stranger you know that it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything I've ever had

I have moved and I've kept on moving, proved the points that I needed proving
Lost the friends that I needed losing, found others on the way
I have tried and I've kept on trying, stolen dreams, yes there's no denying
I have traveled hard sometimes with conscience flying somewhere in the wind

Let me tell you that I love you and I think about you all the time
Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home
But if I should become a stranger you know that it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything I've ever had

Now I'm sitting here before the fire, the empty room the forest choir
The flames that couldn't get any higher they've withered now they've gone
But I'm steady thinking, my way is clear and I know what I will do tomorrow
When the hands have shaken and the kisses flow then I will disappear

Let me tell you that I love you and I think about you all the time
Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home
But if I should become a stranger you know that it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything I've ever had

Teladi · 24/02/2015 21:01

So why were you holding her hand? Is that the way we stand?
Were you lying all the time? Was it just a game to you?
But I'm in so deep. You know I'm such a fool for you.
You got me wrapped around your finger...
Do you have to let it linger?

Welshwabbit · 24/02/2015 21:01

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but hallelujah
(Leonard Cohen)

and

Oh no love, you're not alone
you're watching yourself but you're too unfair
You've got your head all tangled up but if I could only make you care
Oh no love you're not alone
No matter what or who you've been
no matter when or where you've seen... (David Bowie, Rock n roll Suicide)

and

It's funny but I had no sense of living without aim
The day before you came (ABBA, The Day Before you Came)

Also loads of others already mentioned on this thread including Hurt and Common People and Fairytale of New York. And an honourable mention to:

Grass is something you smoke
Birds are something you shag
Take your year in Provence and shove it up your ass.

crazypenguin · 24/02/2015 21:03

Norma Underwear is one of my very favorite songs!

"I'm drunk, and right now I am so in love with you"
The only time by Nine inch nails. Grin

plus cats in the cradle in its entirety. It makes me cry!

JustStirItUna · 24/02/2015 21:05

ecofreckle - I'm going to see him (second time) on Saturday night. SO excited. Come Pick Me Up is my absolute favourite Smile

Bea · 24/02/2015 21:06

Here we are in our summer years... Living off ice cream and chocolate kisses.
Greetings To The New Brunette - The Bard of Barking... Billy Bragg xx

crazypenguin · 24/02/2015 21:08

A few people have said hurt, I like the johnny cash version, but Trent Reznor always does it in the encore at Nine Inch Nails gigs. I've seen him quite a few times and bawl all through, but especially during "everyone I know goes away in the end"

Gah, sorry, just remembered another one. Parents were big Sinatra fans and as a child this part always made me unexplainably sad and maudlin

"But now the days are short, I'm in the autumn of my years
And I think of my life as vintage wine
From fine old kegs
From the brim to the dregs
It poured sweet and clear
It was a very good year"

Nocturne123 · 24/02/2015 21:15

Goodbye's too good a word babe
So I'll just say fare thee well
I ain't saying you treated me unkind
You could've done better
But I don't mind
You just kind of wasted my precious time
But don't think twice it's alright - dylan Envy

I'm glad I didn't die before I met you - bright eyes

She said I'm ok, I'm alright
Though you have gone from my life
You said that it would, so everything should be alright - Flogging Molly

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 24/02/2015 21:17

Have more.
Go ahead and laugh, coz it's funny. I would too if I saw me.
(Clown)

Throw your sticks and stones. Throw your bombs and your blows but you not gonna break my soul.
Part of me)

For a chance to be with you. I'd gladly risk it all
(Through the wire)

It's a little out of touch. A little insane. It's just easier than dealing with the pain.
(Runaway train)

I'll be remembering you whatever else I do.
(Midnight, the stars and you)

Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you
(Do they know it's Christmas)

We fall into this place. Where you ain't backing down. I ain't backing down so what the hell do we Noe.
(Mad)

"Every old sock meets an old shoe;
Here come the hills of time."

Nocturne123 · 24/02/2015 21:22

Could get lost in most Dylan lyrics to be honest :)

paperdreams94 · 24/02/2015 21:24

So remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

Tracy Chapman - Fast Car. I adore the song, and that bit gives me shivers.

Also, perhaps more embarrassingly, from Matilda the Musical -

When I grow up, I will eat sweets every day
On the way to work and I will go to bed late every night
And I will wake up when the sun comes up
And I will watch cartoons until my eyes go square
And I won't care 'cause I'll be all grown up

It makes me blub! Blush Something about children singing about their visions for their future with such a childish innocence just gets me. They don't know what's really in store for them yet and they have those child-goggles on and oh, I'm crying again!

Sunbury1986 · 24/02/2015 21:26

Christmashope. Totally agree adore that line and been to see EC with DH and he kind of smiled at me, DH that is. However Texas concert he said nothing, and didn't even like Texas, however " you can say want you want ..." And just said . That women is a genius poet

Nocturne123 · 24/02/2015 21:27

Why has nobody mentioned Avril Lavigne

He was a sk8er boi , she said see ya later boi ??

You all know nothing about good music Grin

CornishYarg · 24/02/2015 21:27

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

Time by Pink Floyd

Northernexile · 24/02/2015 21:29

Oh this is hard!

The first one that sprang to mind, as it is so evocative, is another Morrissey one:

Trudging slowly over wet sand
Back to the bench were your clothes were stolen
This is the coastal town
That they forgot to close down
Armageddon-come Armageddon
Come, Armageddon, come!

Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey

The whole song is brilliant

sadlovedgirl · 24/02/2015 21:30

Here's mine,

I'm not afraid to take the chances
Of this being wrong or this being right
The long cold wind of discontentment
Has driven me from this dark night

From the extended version of Sad Loved Girl by Deacon Blue gives me goosebumps every time I hear it
