I need to buy a fair few packets of felt pens but are there any crayola washable style ones about that maybe cost a lot bit less?
I hate the cheapo nasty ones that stain everything and go through the paper and rip it. Cba with sharpening pencils.
Can anybody recommend a cheaper set?
Thanks Smile

*disclaimer I totally know this is a first world problem

I bought my son a double pack of these these Staedler ones at Christmas. They are fab.
The lack of decent, and and reasonably, priced felt pens available really annoys me.

I think the Crayola ones are among the cheapest of the reasonable felt tips. A pack of 12 is £2.48 on Amazon.

I use Stabilo for my child which I get 20 for around £11.

That said, I tend to buy good art supplies for her coz I'm a sucker!

We buy Crayola (not that expensive if you shop around) because they are definitely washable.

We do have some Berol ones but they're more expensive than Crayola. Staedtler are lovely too but they're also a similar price. I do think you get what you pay for with felt pens and it annoys me when they dry out quickly. The Berol ones we have are from when I was at uni (so 15 years ago) and they're still going strong.

DD has some lovely colouring pencils (a set of 30+ decent ones from WHSmiths) and a high quality sharpener. She can now sharpen them herself (unlike when she was using a rubbish sharpener) and there's so many shades in the pack, she has every colour she wants.

Crayola is usually on 3 for 2 in either Smyths or Toys R Us.

Sainsbury's washable ones are ok, around £2.50. But not the cheaper non washable ones.

I find Crayola run out so quickly but I like them as they're so smooth and don't drag on paper.

NormHonal · 24/02/2015 10:55

My DCs used to burn through a LOT of cheaper pens, mostly Crayola, but a few years back I "upgraded" them to a pack of Berol pens, and we haven't looked back. They don't dry out when the tops aren't put back on. Shock

I think we're on the second set in maybe 3 years, and they get a lot of use/abuse from young DCs, so they have been worth the extra money in our house.

crayola are usually really cheap in Wilkinsons. Depends what you are looking for I guess. If you are wanting all of the shades of the rainbow you'll have to pay more but for a basic set of about ten they are usually only about £1 in Wilkinsons here.

Bic do washable felt tips, they're quite reasonable on Amazon. Also I think IKEA do a big pack of felt tips but I'm not sure if they're washable.

Have you looked in Poundland, btw? PILs got loads of cheap washable felt tips for the kids from there. They dry out awfully quickly, but if it's just volume you're concerned with then maybe that's the answer?

We use Giotto felt tips but no way you could buy loads of them cheaply. I watch the kids like a hawk to ensure lids are put back on properly on the decent pens!
