Someone upthread confused me a bit, talking about a glockelstop. I think you mean a glottal stop? Just loving "axiomatically fallacious". Will have to try and work that into a sentence this week!

BreconBeBuggered · 23/02/2015 13:27

I often use the word 'wrath' - it's the kind of woman I am. OP is 100% correct. If I have ever heard anyone pronouncing it 'wroth', I must have silently forgiven them and moved on.

Gruntfuttock · 23/02/2015 13:31

BreconBeBuggered You've really confused me. First you say that the OP is correct and then you say pronouncing it "wroth" is wrong.
I agree with the OP that it's pronounced "wroth".

treaclesoda · 23/02/2015 13:34

This is going back to something posted further up the thread, but every time a discussion comes up on pronunciation, the name Craig comes up. Sometimes being compared to the name Gregg. And then I sit for hours trying to say those words to myself and they always always sound the same. It totally blows my tiny mind to think that they could possibly not be pronounced the same way, I just have no concept of it. And it drives me bonkers.

Would anyone be brave enough to record themselves saying those words and then post a link, so that I don't have to drive myself mad all afternoon?

If you ask nicely, I'll record myself saying a 'thoisand poinds' and 'parr sharr' for you all in return Wink

BigRedBall · 23/02/2015 13:37

Also, it's AN-ER....AnnA
NOT ONNA.

MonstrousRatbag · 23/02/2015 13:39

It's roth! I can't believe there's even a debate about it!

PrimalLass · 23/02/2015 13:42

AN-ER....AnnA

Where does the ER come into it?

Rath (Scottish).

Littlemeg37 · 23/02/2015 13:48

Its Roth is the Uk and Rath in the US but I have always said rath, maybe a regional thing also, not that I can remember saying it very often.

RocketInMyPocket · 23/02/2015 13:50

treacle Within the first 10 seconds this video says 'Craig David' and 'Robbie Craig'
That's how I pronounce Craig without the singing of course

OP posts:
BigRedBall · 23/02/2015 13:51

AN-Uh then. When you day ER you don't pronounce the R do you?

treaclesoda · 23/02/2015 13:53

Rocket but that's how I would say Gregg too, to rhyme with Craig ! Grin

treaclesoda · 23/02/2015 13:54

And I also say 'rath' not 'roth' for wrath. Smile

RocketInMyPocket · 23/02/2015 13:55

It's nigh on impossible to write things out phonetically, because we all pronounce things different.
Opening of this interview might be a bit clearer?

OP posts:
treaclesoda · 23/02/2015 14:00

oh well, it looks like my pronunciation of Craig ties in ok with everyone else's. But I pronounce words ending in 'eg' in exactly the same way Grin

RocketInMyPocket · 23/02/2015 14:02

So Greg has an eh sound like egg, craig has an ay sound, like lay?
Now if you tell me lay an egg rhymes in your accent, then I'm stuffed

OP posts:
Eeeeeowwwfftz · 23/02/2015 14:02

There's only one way out of all this, which is for us all to agree to say "rarrth". (I'm a rother myself, but would be willing to compromise for world peace).

On brands, the iconic synth manufacturer Moog rhymes with vogue. Not that I expect anyone on this thread will have cause to use this knowledge, but if I can't post this here, where can I?

CatsClaus · 23/02/2015 14:03

what about apricot...innocent little fruit

but is it APE-ri-cot or APP-rick-ott??

then we can start on almonds. :o

treaclesoda · 23/02/2015 14:03

you've got it rocket Lay an egg does rhyme to me!

Egg is ay-g
Leg is lay-g

etc etc

FannyFifer · 23/02/2015 14:04

Im Scottish & it has always been pronounced rath, if I try & say roth it just sounds like I'm speaking in a pretend posh English accent.

CatsClaus · 23/02/2015 14:04

oh and on the matter of the OP, i am not a wrAther, but sort of wroth...not an all out "O" sound, but not a west country ahhhhhhhhhh

treaclesoda · 23/02/2015 14:06

It's lucky that I am in the house alone at the moment, as I sit at the kitchen table with the laptop in front of me saying 'lay an egg' out loud to myself...

PrimalLass · 23/02/2015 14:08

AN-Uh then. When you day ER you don't pronounce the R do you?

??

What you mean?

WinterBabyof89 · 23/02/2015 14:09

I pronounce it 'rath' & will continue to do so. I've never heard an acquaintance/ friend/family member pronounce it 'roth', but then again wrath rarely comes up in conversation so can't say 100%.

As long as we all know what the other person means when they say it..happy days!

PrimalLass · 23/02/2015 14:10

Don't care Longtime, I'd still sound like a right numpty if I said roth.
