It's fucking medieval that shops are only allowed to open a few hours and not allowed to sell gin at a specific point. It is 2015 FFS.

HookedOnHooking · 22/02/2015 09:39

And why are people paid more for working? (I am one of them). But why? Blimming ridiculous.

This is what happens with a state religion and bishops in the house of lords

HookedOnHooking · 22/02/2015 09:40

And all 'oh hurrah it's the weekend!' Bollocks. It's just another day. Life should carry on as normsl. Shops should be open. People should work as normal. Patients should be discharged from hospitals. Nurseries should be open.

NORMAL

It's a normal day with normal shop hours in Scotland.

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 22/02/2015 09:41

You know you have the rest of the week to shop, right? Where's the problem, it gives the staff the chance to have one late morning. They should be closed more IMO, especially over Christmas. The licence rules are stupid though but a lot of the supermarkets have a full drinks licence so you can buy gin at any time.

Honeydragon · 22/02/2015 09:41

I'm not sure it's normal to have an all consuming NEED for gin at 9:30am on Mon-Sat morning, you know? Grin

FauxFox · 22/02/2015 09:41

I have visions of you banging on the closed doors of tesco demanding gin now Smile....

HookedOnHooking · 22/02/2015 09:42

I even am a religious freak type that does church and shit.

But I cannot abide this whole sunday thing.

Life does not stop so why should other things?

TheSolitaryWanderer · 22/02/2015 09:42

I'd agree with you if the employers were limited as to how many hours they could make someone work, and that no one was made to work more than 5 days a week.
I'm sure that the changes to Sunday will continue to happen, when I was a chiid, nowhere opened other than for the Sunday papers.

SaucyJack · 22/02/2015 09:43

I've got half a can of flat cider left from last night in the kitchen. You're welcome to come and get it if you're that desperate for a drink Wink

HookedOnHooking · 22/02/2015 09:44

I am admittedly a little tetchy this morning. My back hurts. I have things to do and I can't do them until I have been shopping.

OP posts:
chinstrappenguin · 22/02/2015 09:45

Back pain is a bastard. Hope you feel better hook Wink

Bluestocking · 22/02/2015 09:46

Gin probably does have an analgesic effect, but you'd almost certainly be better off using ibuprofen/paracetamol/diclofenac for your back pain.
And why shouldn't there be one day of the week that feels a bit different to all the other days?

HookedOnHooking · 22/02/2015 09:46

Oooh it's the weeeekend

Do you have plans for the weekend?

Oooooh a Sunday lie in

FUCK OFF.

some people work fucking silly hours and it doesn't fucking matter wat day it is.

Open the bastard shops and let me get on with it.

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 22/02/2015 09:47

I remember when all of the shops were closed on Sundays, it was rather nice to have forced time with your family Grin Your local co-op will be open you know, they sell gin. Working in retail is shit with shit pay. I do think all staff should be allowed to have the day off, likewise with Boxing Day. My sister worked in retail for 20 years and she only had 1 Christmas off, that was because she'd just had an emergency c section and her maternity leave had started early. Her manager would have had her standing behind the till bleeding if she could Hmm

Sirzy · 22/02/2015 09:48

I think it's right that we have a day when things are a bit quieter and less things are open.

MidniteScribbler · 22/02/2015 09:48

I think it's nice to have a bit of downtime in the week. Where my holiday house is (and where I will retire) they still stick to only the necessities open on Sunday (grocery store is open, but bottle shop is not). Some stores still close at lunchtime on Saturdays, and most still close on Wednesday afternoon. Amazingly, people manage to buy their gin on a Friday and still get through the weekend.

I think we've become lazy expecting things to be open all of the time. People managed for years to plan in advance for stores not to be open 24/7.

larryphilanddave · 22/02/2015 09:49

I don't think it necessarily gives staff late mornings on a Sunday, or time with family as I've often heard argued. Firstly they must have days off on other days, shop staff don't tend to do 7 day weeks so they still get their 'weekend'. But the main point is being Sunday staff doesn't mean you get to saunter in at 11am and leave at 5pm or whatever the opening hour restrictions are. I still had to do my usual 9 hour days, I just worked before/after the store was opened, along with loads of other people. I would have preferred a normal shop day, climate control would always be turned off at closing and it would get hot and smelly pretty quickly...

This was a couple of years ago so I doubt much has changed. Some companies may not do this but that's down to the company and not Sunday Trading Law. The law just means you can only serve people during certain hours.

TheSolitaryWanderer · 22/02/2015 09:49

You are a grumpy git who needs to go back to bed with a gin IV. I hope you are not inflicting yourself on anyone IRL in your current mood.
Next time, buy another bottle as soon as you open the last one.

bluevanman · 22/02/2015 09:49

I would like to see a more German approach to Sundays here.

It's a day everyone non vital should have off to spend time with their family.

If you need gin on a Sunday morning, maybe you should have bought some (extra) on Saturday night

thatsucks · 22/02/2015 09:50

What a bizarre thread - but OP you are making me laugh! Hope your back gets better.

HookedOnHooking · 22/02/2015 09:50

Working for the fucking NHS is shit for shit pay too. But we don't fucking stop and say 'Stop pushing, it's Sunday, just wait until 10.30'.

A day off during the week when your DC are at school, larry? Hardly family time. Saturday is the busiest day so most of the staff are in. When do they see their DC, exactly? Shops should be closed on Sundays. No one's going to die because they couldn't go to Next and buy a fluffy cushion for the sofa.

HookedOnHooking · 22/02/2015 09:53

Who the fuck actually wants to have 'family time'?

People leaving crumbs all over the place and breathing loudly. I'd rather not.
