It's fucking medieval that shops are only allowed to open a few hours and not allowed to sell gin at a specific point. It is 2015 FFS.

People managed for years to plan in advance for stores not to be open 24/7.

that's because people managed for years with having only one of a couple working.

it's archaic. it's from a different time that doesn't apply now.

As for people having a morning off, that makes sense. But I don't understand why that can't be another morning if you work Sunday.

MumSnotBU · 22/02/2015 11:36

I love Sundays-I can run up main St without tripping over shoppersGrin

Sunday papers, Sunday lie ins, Sunday night tv, Sunday roast..

Sunday is my favourite day.

Roseleaf · 22/02/2015 11:38

I work in catering, I work Sundays.

DH works in a nursing home. He works Sunday mornings, I do the evenings.

Can't remember the last time we had a family Sunday. We manage to slot in a roast in the two hour break between our shifts.

I know many, many families who have similar set ups. If everybody still worked the nice, steady 9-5, with weekends off, then by all means close the damn shops and have a day of rest. But it's the 21st century now, and the shops need to be open, because as a PP said, family life, and the weekly routine, is a million miles away from what it used to be.

trufflehunterthebadger · 22/02/2015 11:41

I don't think it is medieval to allow people a day of rest. In fact, I would describe it as a sign of a civilised society. Everyone needs a rest on one day of the week. Why are people so determined to fill up all available time they have? There are things you can do on a Sunday that aren't boring and don't involve going to the shops, like reading a book, going for a walk, watching a Sunday movie, getting together with friends, eating. There is no forced jollity about Sundays - they are just a time to relax and get your mind ready for the following week

I agree with this. And i speak as someone who has worked shifts (hospitality and emergency services) for 20 years. I don't resent other workers having the weekends off, i like having time off when they are all at work !

Oldraver · 22/02/2015 11:44

My OH was working last night and tonight...he likes to call in the shop on his way to work to pick up some food and I had to remind him they wouldn't be open tonight. He says with working 4 on 4 off all the days seem the same to him and the weekend shutdown is a pain sometimes

trufflehunterthebadger · 22/02/2015 11:46

Roseleaf, why don't you just do that stuff another day ? DH and i both work shifts and we manage just fine.

Oldraver · 22/02/2015 11:48

I bet all the people saying Sundays are for relaxing family days are ESSO workers

chiefbrody · 22/02/2015 11:51

I love Sundays,

lie in
no school
no work
relaxing brekkie
papers
get the roast on
walk the dog all together

eat the roast
go cinema/park/beach

sit in the garden
plant some plants
read
listen to music
play a game
snacks for tea.

bath

lush

If people dont like spending time with their kids all i think is 'poor kids'

trufflehunterthebadger · 22/02/2015 11:53

I do think it is hilarious that people seem to think that shift working is a modern phenomenon. Nurses, firemen, policemen and many other workers have always worked 24/7 patterns. It's not new

HookedOnHooking · 22/02/2015 11:53

While I'm here and too grumpy to start a new thread , what sort of painkillers are best for toothache? D1 is working an 11 hour shift (on a fucking sunday) and her dodgy crumbly tooth (no enamel - all my fault for being ill when she was a fetus) has crumbled and is hurting.

I have lots of good painkillers but am sadly allergic to most of them.

springlamb · 22/02/2015 11:54

Is she not back with the shopping (and gin) yet?
Do we think she's done something really mean to the poor pyjama clad DH?
Do you think she'll remember the tonic water and the Biscuit?

springlamb · 22/02/2015 11:54

Eek she's back!

QuintessentiallyInShade · 22/02/2015 11:57

Surely you can get on with things without gin??? If not, you need to rethink...

springlamb · 22/02/2015 11:58

I'm not good with painkillers. But depending on age perhaps Calpol and held in the mouth over the tooth for a while before swallowing so it might get straight to the point? If older, perhaps the soluble Panadol things? Please don't be cross with me.

larryphilanddave · 22/02/2015 12:00

Well looking at it this way now - sure, shift work is nothing new, but lifestyles and work in general have changed, and apparently as this thread shows there is demand for Sunday opening. So why would the government want to regulate opening hours if loosening the restrictions could mean more opportunities for business? In other areas where there aren't these rules it's all worked out by demand and hasn't led to 24/7 commercial madness. People can get on with their Sundays as usual - shopping, not shopping, or working.

SoupDragon · 22/02/2015 12:00

So, basically, everyone should work 7 days a week...?

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 22/02/2015 12:03

I agree chief I love Sundays for the reasons you've listed.

Stripyhoglets · 22/02/2015 12:06

Nurofen plus for toothache, if she can take it.

HookedOnHooking · 22/02/2015 12:10

She's 18 so big enough for proper drugs.

Seriouslyffs · 22/02/2015 12:20

Solpadein is the best thing ever- Is there a pharmacy? They sell it without codeine on the shelves but you need to get it from behind the counter for the crack codeine.
If we ever get tickers or tsing stores on our posts can I steal this please?
People leaving crumbs all over the place and breathing loudly. I'd rather not.

HookedOnHooking · 22/02/2015 12:29

No pharmacy open within 20 miles.

BECAUSE IT IS FUCKING SUNDAY

I rest my case.

I live in a town that still has half day closing on a Wednesday, as well as everything being closed on Sunday. I've learnt to plan ahead or do a mad dash to M&S at the nearby motorway services and I rather enjoy the freedom of having nothing to do except walk the dog, watch DS play footy and smell the meat slowly roasting as I sit by the fire with a G&T (bought midweekWink)

All that said, the pharmacy attached to our GP surgery is open 100 hours per week! Hope you manage to get hold of something for the pain.

TwoOddSocks · 22/02/2015 12:49

When I moved to Germany it annoyed me that shops were shut on Sunday but actually I grew to like it. It's actually nice that almost everyone has the day off to spend together. I prefer it to when I lived in the US and everything was open 24 hours and people had to work very anti social hours if they wanted to keep their jobs.
