J'Accuse... I do not believe a sizeable minority on here when they say "I blah blah blah"

E.g. :-
"I cook from scratch" - I hate "from scratch". We used to say "everything was homemade".

And those of you who state "homemade potato wedges" Hmm? ...yeah, I'm impressed. So that would be some potatoes shoved in the oven then?

Sorry, Hooty. My apologies. I misread.

Seems to be another MN thing, though. This idea that if you do it all 'right', ,you'll live a long, healthy, able-bodied life.

If only that were true. It's not.

expatinscotland · 22/02/2015 20:12

We do have an air fryer. FWIW, I bought it because it's far easier to clean Wink. You do have to clean it every time you use it though, or it sets off the fire alarm.

treaclesoda · 22/02/2015 20:13

WhenMarnie it sounds to me like they were lovingly air prepared in an infusion of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and other less famous gases.

Is that poncey enough?

Passmethecrisps · 22/02/2015 20:14

C'mon then back. Now you have joined us share your "gave the kids marshmallow fondue for dinner" admission. You know you want to Grin

WhenMarnieWasThere · 22/02/2015 20:14

:)

Passmethecrisps · 22/02/2015 20:14

But but how can it fry in air? Eh?

treaclesoda · 22/02/2015 20:16

I didn't know what an air fryer was so I have googled. Is that not just a grill on a jaunty angle?

WhenMarnieWasThere · 22/02/2015 20:17

Mine was bought from my sister when she split up with her husband. It was a pity purchase as I didn't think it was worth having, she would have been too proud to take a handout and it was an easy way to give her £30.

Best bloody £30 I've ever spent.
Everything breadcrumbed and frozen cooks to perfection.

I don't clean it out every time, treacle, so it's more a case of lovingly air prepared in an infusion of carbon created smoke. Thankfully, the smoke alarm is far, far away from the kitchen. :) :)

kickassangel · 22/02/2015 20:17

I just googled air fryer. There's a pic of a mom smiling like a crazed woman as she chops potatoes. The very anticipation of feeding her kids slightly less unhealthy fried food is making her insane with joy! But she's peeled the potatoes! Gasp.

doesn't she know that the vitamins are all stored directly under the skin? She's just ruined her children for life. They will all become obese cat thieves and sticky fingered shop lifters if she feeds them chips without the mud and skin still on!
Shock

passthewineplz · 22/02/2015 20:18

Sorry to hear about your dd expat.

I totally agree that life is for living. I breasfed my DD, tried blw, and made all her meals from scratch and swore that no fruit shoot or happy meal would touch her lips until she was 18!

Then I got cancer (well I got it when I was weaning her) my whole perspective on life began to change. I realised I was an uptight moody arse and there was far too many things in life to worry about than the odd fish finger.

It's everything in moderation, and guidelines change all of the time. I'm well aware of facts and figures and the strain on the health service, and the issues with obesity. Neither I or my dd are overweight, I give her all the good stuff and occasionally give her some chocolate as a treat. Hell she even refused someone's offer of chocolate the other day, and I can't get her to eat pancakes or waffles (strange child).

If she ever became over weight, I would address it as I'm fully aware of the risks.

This thread isn't intended to mock others parenting skills, it's on recognition that some parents stick the odd fish finger in the oven...

WhenMarnieWasThere · 22/02/2015 20:19

If you peer up inside, it's like one of the rings from an electric hob with an industrial hairdrier to blast the heat down. I got the less-poncey one as mine does NOT break up stir the food as it cooks. It requires one to remove the basket and give it a great SHAKE from time to time. And take care that you don't splash yourself with the fat that has dripped down.

expatinscotland · 22/02/2015 20:19

Noooo! Air fryers are lovely! Use little power and I got one on the cheap when they went on offer in Tesco's before Xmas and I had points. They do a great job of 'frying'.

expatinscotland · 22/02/2015 20:20

I never peel potatoes.

WhenMarnieWasThere · 22/02/2015 20:22

Kickass, she's probably smiling like a loon cos she knows that her lovingly made from scratch air fried 'chips' are going to taste like SHITE.

Cos that's the one thing it can NOT do well.

Mccain's frozen, crinkled cut ones though. Now, that's a different matter.

Passmethecrisps · 22/02/2015 20:23

Hmm. I have seen them in costco. Might check them out.

Yes, ladies. Costco.

passthewineplz · 22/02/2015 20:23

I can't bold on my phone, top bit is for ex pat. Rest is for anyone dissing us! BiscuitCake

treaclesoda · 22/02/2015 20:23

If I didn't peel the potatoes the dc would peer at them suspiciously and decide they didn't like potatoes.

Passmethecrisps · 22/02/2015 20:24

Mash made with unpeeled potatoes becomes 'crushed' potato. Much, much poncier

WhenMarnieWasThere · 22/02/2015 20:28

I luffs costco.

I read many a 'what shall I buy from costco?' freds.

I always want to reply "Cake". THey make lovely cakes.

Unescorted · 22/02/2015 20:28

I leave my kids in the car when I pay for petrol or go in for the paper ...... sometimes I forget to lock my car too.

Passmethecrisps · 22/02/2015 20:29

The cake is guid.

Passmethecrisps · 22/02/2015 20:31

I refuse to get the samples myself so I send DH to get one for dd, him and me. He is shameless

tomandizzymum · 22/02/2015 20:31

Just out of interest do they still do the cbeebies breakfasts come and boast thing? We were watching in amazment as little Alfie was tucking into his gluten free, wholewheat, made from scratch bread and organic egg. If I send in a picture of my son eating an egg McMuffin do you think they'd air it?

ahbollocks · 22/02/2015 20:31

Do you fellow slatterns ever have odds and sods meals?
Par example;
Yesterday dd had scrambled egg, yoghurt, cracker, pickle, porridge. In that order (i know i know shes a strange one) because I had lost my bank card and couldn't pick any shopping up.

Big squeeze for expat.
