J'Accuse... I do not believe a sizeable minority on here when they say "I blah blah blah"

E.g. :-
"I cook from scratch" - I hate "from scratch". We used to say "everything was homemade".

And those of you who state "homemade potato wedges" Hmm? ...yeah, I'm impressed. So that would be some potatoes shoved in the oven then?

This thread is hysterical. I dipp ed in half an hour ago "for five minutes" before starting to cook most of the week's food from scratch Grin Grin.

Living, I know a woman who is very "knit-your-own-birthing-ball" ... only her mum told mine (they are old friends) that she has always ended up having emergency caesarians.

She doesn't tell anyone else that, though. She makes out like she has had perfect home births.

carabos · 22/02/2015 13:40

And I've just googled lotus births. I'm speechless. Ds2 had the cord pretty tightly round his neck. Was he meant to wear a sort of smelly scarf for a week? Shock.

CalicoBlue · 22/02/2015 13:47

I think a mix is the happy medium. Do what you and your family wants.

I cook most of our food, pasta sauces, curry etc. I prep in advance and have meals ready for the week.

I find baking relaxing, so I do tend to make cakes, biscuits and bread. Not all the time, but most weeks I will do something.

This is more about what I enjoy doing than what others will think of me for doing it.

Tuesday night my kids see as Domino buy one get one free. As long as DH is away. DS, who I struggle to get to eat, will reheat them from the fridge and they can keep him going for a couple of days.

Always have ice cream, fish fingers, scampi, pies, chicken kiev and oven chips in the freezer. They get eaten when that is what everyone wants.

My kids love rice cakes, as long as they are lathered with Nutella.

The PP about potato wedges made me laugh. One night I said lets have potato wedges with the cold meat, DH asked if we had any in the freezer. He did not even realise that they could be made from cutting up a potato.

CharityD · 22/02/2015 13:50

I'm just raging that I never knew of ketchips...having always been a big fan of crispy pancakes, fish fingers etc. Now I feel I was deprived as a child Grin.

MetallicBeige · 22/02/2015 13:50

Carabos the lotus birth bunch even sew special bags to keep the placenta in, after they've salted it of course.

Read this for some examples of the 'beautiful experience', there's no real benefit to it, no other cultures traditionally do it, it's just something some woman made up in the 70s. Lotus Birth blog

MetallicBeige · 22/02/2015 13:53

Ahh Calico with your lists you are getting close to justifying, that is not required on here, it's a safe place where we can admit to enjoying preparing and eating Bernard Matthews mini kievs and Mashtags completely guilt free.

HootyMcTooty · 22/02/2015 13:54

Why isn't there a vomit face symbol?

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 22/02/2015 13:55

Am just about to make DH a turkey burger sandwich on white bread, with cheese slices and lashings of tomato ketchup!! Oh and butter

MetallicBeige · 22/02/2015 13:57

I've just looked at that blog I've linked to and apparently one of the lotus mum's older children 'described' remembering the cutting of her cord, "it felt like a hurt in her heart".

Jesus wept!

bigkidsdidit · 22/02/2015 13:57

As well as ketchips, my gran used to give us burgers with ketchup ready inside. At the height of the bse scare. My mum was RAGING Grin

ColdJerseySpud · 22/02/2015 13:58

My kids eat junk, i cba to cook from scratch alot, and they love fizzy pop and have it when we do.

Recyclebike · 22/02/2015 14:20

Does anyone remember burgers in a tin? I still secretly love them on toast. And toast toppers? Do they still make that?

Some women here are that uptight that their vaginas sing songs from Frozen. They just need to let go a little bit.

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 22/02/2015 14:22

Recycle not sure if they still do burgers in tins but you can still get toast toppers

Fastlosingit · 22/02/2015 14:30

I'm gagging for a span fritter now, wonder where I can find one? Might have to resort to making one from scratch

SummerHouse · 22/02/2015 14:33

Coke float with that? (I.e. coke with a slab of ice cream in it available throughout the 80's in my school canteen.

passthewineplz · 22/02/2015 14:33

They still sell spam fritters at the fish and chip shops near me

SummerHouse · 22/02/2015 14:33

Hand made of course.

funnyossity · 22/02/2015 14:35

Well I would always "pan fry" my spam fritters.

WorraLiberty · 22/02/2015 14:43

When I was new to Mumsnet, I mentioned that I allowed my DC to take a glass of squash up to bed with him, in case he got thirsty in the night.

I then got a PM (my first ever!) from some poor lady who sounded like she was almost in tears Shock

She said, "Please please don't allow your DC to do this. He'll get tooth decay and suffer really badly. Please stop and think about all the acid and sugar clinging to his teeth and gums all night. By the time his adult teeth come through, they'll already be rotten discoloured and rotten. I hope you don't mind me PM-ing you but I just couldn't stop thinking about your poor child".

I said, "Aww thanks but he's actually 20yrs old now and has perfect teeth." Confused Grin

I don't know if she thought I was taking the piss, but she didn't reply after that Blush

kickassangel · 22/02/2015 14:45

See, I don't let DD eat cake for breakfast, as I figure she needs something to rebel against. Once she's a bit older (teens/college) she can revel in stuffing it down her any time of the day or night and knowing that it's somehow so much better because she shouldn't be doing it.

I see it as a gift I'm giving to her.

bigkidsdidit · 22/02/2015 14:47

Funny isn't pan fry just to specify not deep fried?

Fastlosingit · 22/02/2015 14:51

I need to move nearer a better fish and chip shop clearly passthewine either that or settle for a battered sausage ??

Nimble2000 · 22/02/2015 14:54

Recyclebike - let it go

passthewineplz · 22/02/2015 14:57

Haha! That made me laugh Worra.

I get the whole sugary foods and drink thing can be bad for teeth, however weak watered down cordial isn't as bad as drinking fruit juices and smoothies. It's everything in moderation, just unfortunatly some people take 'guidelines' too far.

Personally I don't like the taste of water, I only drink pop at home and have it strong. I do realise it's bad for my teeth, and when my dd asks for juice I put a tiny amount in her water and I do make sure that she brushes her teeth.

In my house fruitshoots are banned, only because they send her loopy - and believe me she's loopy enough!
