E.g. :-
"I cook from scratch" - I hate "from scratch". We used to say "everything was homemade".

And those of you who state "homemade potato wedges" Hmm? ...yeah, I'm impressed. So that would be some potatoes shoved in the oven then?

The thing that pisses me off is that junk food just isn't the same as it was in the 70s/80s/90s. We had great junk food back then - crispy pancakes were properly radioactive, and pot noodles actually had preservatives in them. Also, chippies used to serve burgers in batter and SPAM (be still my beating heart) fritters. Ffs, we used to have spam fritters at school. Shove that in your pipe and smoke it, Jamie Oliver, you fat-tongued wanker.

You are my kind of people wyld
Smile

Mrsfrumble · 22/02/2015 11:58

I'm all for getting children to walk as much as possible, and making exercise part of day-to-day life. But depriving yourself of the option of bunging a tired, whining toddler in a buggy when the weather is crap and you're running late on principle seems foolhardy to me.

Well we have porridge for breakfast everyday...beat that MN (glows with smugness) - although we do put lashings of sugar on said cooked oats haha Grin

DS does not eat fresh blueberries on his porridge although sometimes he has been known to add some (whispers) chocolate buttons

TheCuntOfMonteCristo · 22/02/2015 12:01

Neither me or any of my friends get even slightly stressed about screen time. We don't think McDonalds is the food of the Devil. All our children drink squash and Coca Cola. We all think that if you've had a heavy day it is perfectly acceptable to just bung a pizza in the oven for the kids and crack open the Muller Corner yoghurts.

Sometimes we might gather at each others house for an evening of nibbles and a few drinks. Assorted children are banished upstairs to the Wii and huge bowls of Pringles and Maoams sweets anything to keep them out of our hair

By 9pm there isn't a single fully sober adult in the house but no one worries that we might spontaneously need to drive someone to A&E.

Yet my friends pretty much all conform to the Mumsnet stereotype of being educated, professional women with a Joules gilet and a fridge full of naice ham Grin

I can't be doing with the armchair mummy nutritionists either -- though that is largely because a lot of what they say doesn't make sense.

Take houmous, for example. How did it happen that houmous suddenly became this healthy product to feed to your children?

Houmous is squashed chickpeas, water, a bit of lemon juice, olive oil and garlic. What is so wonderfully nutritional about that? It's a bit like the Eastern Med version of refried beans. Confused

TalcAndTurnips · 22/02/2015 12:07

I like houmous, and I'm not remotely worthy.

Sad
passthewineplz · 22/02/2015 12:07

Well it's 12pm, best get up and get my trackies on and get myself to mcdonalds for 1 of my 5 aday. Might have a fresh Orange juice with my large Big Mac meal.... Grin

Then I'm going to spend all day on sitting on my hairy fat arse, as I need to write an assignment, so that I can get into uni to become a professional head tilter!

Bring on super noodles, and baked beans! Grin

LittleBearPad · 22/02/2015 12:09

Wtf is wrong with fish fingers anyway? White fish, breadcrumbs... I don't get it.

cruikshank · 22/02/2015 12:09

Agree about hummous - it's hardly healthy, is it, really? If you want to eat your portion of chickpeas because you think they're good for you, there are much less fattening options available.

Following on from my post remembering when junk food was really junk food, have they stopped doing those all day breakfast tins now? I haven't seen them in ages.

magimedi · 22/02/2015 12:10

Wunda web? You pretentious lot. One of the reasons i married DH was because he showed me how to take up a hem with staples & had one of those button fixing machines.

Psshaw - lazy mothers of today.

LittleBearPad · 22/02/2015 12:11

Yotam Ottolenghi that's who Works posh, trendy hard to get into restaurant in Islington. Middle Eastern food must therefore be the dogs.

passthewineplz · 22/02/2015 12:12

Cruik- Yep they still sell the tins of all day breakfast. I saw tinned stewing steak and hotdogs the other day and was tempered

KatieScarlettreregged · 22/02/2015 12:13

Every party I hosted was exactly like Cuntofmontes'
Except I don't drink, but never ever needed to take anyone to A&E. Everyone just bundled their offspring into a taxi at stupid o'clock or just left them here till they came back the next day to collect. And we're happy that we gave them cereal and toast for breakfast. My friends are ace.

passthewineplz · 22/02/2015 12:14

Tempted I mean

Salmotrutta · 22/02/2015 12:17

I like your style Wyld

And Talc - we know you aren't worthy so it's all good.

I see your "fresh" this and that and I raise you "good" - "I only eat two squares of good chocolate once a decade". "I won't touch that Costa filth I prefer good coffee direct from the arses of Colombian spider monkeys".

MusicForTheMasses · 22/02/2015 12:18

Thank you for this thread! I get scared to post because of the reactions by various "judgy pants" - Santimommy is brilliant, I've just had to share this on FB (although I may have lost half the people on my friends list to do so)!

TheCuntOfMonteCristo · 22/02/2015 12:21

Children were generally left to sleep where they dropped. The next morning they would be served toast and cereal by their severely hung over hosts.

Now the children are older and we have to suffer their sniffs of disapproval and disdainful expressions as we get pissed enjoy ourselves. Still they at least ring out for their own pizza and call a taxi when it's finally time to go home. One of the many, many benefits of them having smart phones.

MetallicBeige · 22/02/2015 12:22

Pot Noodles were much nicer before they took all of the salt and preservatives out. The beef one was my failsafe hangover cure.

As a student I lived on various types of alcohol and Ginsters Buffet Bars - they were filthy, like an elongated scotch egg but instead of egg the filling was coleslaw. Absolutely grim, I saw them as a fantastic fully balanced meal. Beer before food and all that.

thornrose · 22/02/2015 12:23

I'm just wondering what my mum would've posted about on MN back in the 70's when I was a child.

AIBU to allow my dd to play out from dawn until dusk with a gang of neighbourhood children.

What's everyone having for dinner tonight? We're having tinned hotdogs in white rolls with home made chips cooked in beef dripping. Followed by Angel Delight.

MusicForTheMasses · 22/02/2015 12:25

When I was at school my sandwiches on a Monday were roast beef from the day before with dripping instead of butter lol!

AuntieDee · 22/02/2015 12:25

OP - I guess what I was trying to say (in my garbled way) is that people make you feel bad for not 'cooking from scratch' but it shouldn't be about that - I find prepped food cheaper, quicker and tastier. The main reason I started doing it is some store bought stuff makes me want to vom with the amount of salt and sugar in it (I'm very sensitive to salt :( ).

Saying that - I still LOVE fishfinger butties on white bread with real butter! It's my favourite comfort food.

Actually thinking about it my second favourite comfort food is mash butties - I don't make my own mash I only do strore bought because I can never get it smooth enough :(
